Water damage in new house discovered at possession :(
Comments (29)I am so sorry you're having to go thru this. We are redoing our kitchen due to a leak - FWIW, we had the insurance pay out what it would have cost to put it back "exactly the way it was", while it was somewhat a pain to have to quote stripping and replacing wallpaper and rebuilding up the floor to the original height, this allowed us to take that money and our own funds and gut the kitchen and do it the way we wanted. Yes unplanned remodel has been a huge inconvienence and unplanned expense - but it also allowed us to remodel the way we wanted and for quite a bit less of our own money than if we had done it later. Something to think about. I'd also highly recommend getting your own contractor you trust - dont use their people unless you feel 100% comfortable with them. Have your contractor quote what it would be to put it back the way it was - have the insurance pay you out and then decide what you really want to do. Have the contractor quote it out Firm Fixed Price (FFP) for the insurance. It really sounds like you should also fight to have the cabinets declared a complete loss -- uppers and lowers due to the mold and moisture - likely less expensive too to replace with new rather than having something custom made to match the existing. if the cabs need to come out to ensure it gets dry (likely if they were in contact with the wet floor -- water seeps up boxes and damages them - then they need to take the counter out too and are likely to replace that as well. Good Luck!...See MoreWords, Words, Words...
Comments (49)Wood - Glad you are enjoying the wonderful "Child/Forest" book. My library has the prettiest edition of this, and I donated the other two in the trilogy, but have a strong feeling they went into the FoL book sale instead of on the shelves which I had intended to make up the trilogy for other people. As for the adding of the "-ie" sound to words in English, that is quite common even now. "Brekkies" - breakfast "Sarnies" - sandwiches "Prezzies" - presents/gifts Also, there used to be a penchant for reducing some names to "-az" such as: Sharon --> Shaz or Shazzer Barry --> Baz or Bazzer Des --> Dezzie This might just be my group of friends though... We had a mixed bunch (social class speaking) and I think this shortening was a lower class trend... I could be mistaken as it may vary in other regions......See MoreHave you discovered any new ingredients lately?
Comments (29)Italian Saba. Just picked up a bottle being on sale. I've been using a burnt batch of maple syrup and almost out of it. (actually really good if i want a caramel-ish dolup) in a sauce or stew... "Saba -- also known as sapa, vin cotto or mosco cotto -- is an Italian syrup made from cooking down grape must. It looks just like balsamic, and tastes a whole lot like it too, but it's not nearly as expensive because it isn't aged. Chefs have begun incorporating saba into their menus over the past couple of years, and it's time home cooks did the same." I'll test it tonight....See MoreMoments of Serendipity While Reading
Comments (20)This is not really a moment of serendipity but I found it interesting and envy-making in equal parts. I occasionally 'do' some family tree research on behalf of friends and 99% of us are from a long line of butchers, bakers and candlestick makers or in my case ancestors who made nails right up until the 1850's and back as far as the 1590's. What an adventurous lot! But I have just one friend who comes from a background of European quasi-aristocracy with too much money and time on their hands who in the 1800's wandered around German and French spas, having 'affairs', fighting duels, neglecting children. Some of this wealth had come from sugar plantations in Jamaica and as 'handouts' from the winning side of Revolutionary causes. Going back another generation to the 1700's I found a 'respectable' family connection among the English landed gentry . My friend's 7 time great grandparents were called Hampson and Miss Rebecca Hampson married one William Austen who's son the Rev George married Cassandra Leigh who's seventh child was Jane Austen . . . You will remember that Jane Austen mentions in Mansfield Park the 'interests' the Bertram family have in their Jamaican estates and in 'real life' the hard-up sons of the Austen's were helped by their wealthy relations. Just thought I would share this find....See Moreyoyobon_gw
