Comments (6)Posieh, thank goodness your daughter was with you when all that happpened...wow! You are one tough cookie! 80, eh? I'm impressed---you and Lilo may be distant relatives, you're both such stoic women. Welcome back; you've been missed! KJ...See MoreAG Pumpkin Update - Wayne
Comments (20)Ladies & gentlemen: growing pumpkins is a lot of work. But I may finally have a keeper. It is perhaps 8 inches around, and some animal has done some minimal munching on it, but I think it will survive. It is currently surrounded by a cage of chicken wire. In an uncaged area, I am noticing a couple other pumpkins forming. You know, I've got the closed flower and under the flower is the little pumpkin. I did not have time to protect them with a cage before work this morning, but I will fence them in tonight. Raptors have returned to my area to hunt. I can hear their cries all day long, so I think their prey (the annoying little squirrels who were damaging my pumpkin flowers and stems) are in hiding. Go raptors! Now I may get a nice fig harvest to boot. Isn't Nature wonderful with its checks and balances? So my pumpkin plan is to do some fencing and keep up the water and fertilizer. There's about 2 months of hot weather left. I will gladly accept any size pumpkin I can manage to grow & protect. I'll take this year's experience to the bank, and next year...look out! Thanks for the encouragement and pointers. Cheers. deep....See MoreUpdate on DH, reunion and family
Comments (8)Stacie, sorry to hear about your DH's newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes and his other GI issues. I am a nutritionist/registered dietitian and I work in an endocrine research clinic. It is indeed possible that his blood sugar can be in the 400's when undiagnosed, and his level will also be affected by infection and the stress of pain/illness. There are so many excellent oral diabetes meds these days. Lifestyle changes are the key (along with blood glucose monitoring at home and meds) to controlling diabetes. Your DH has a lot to live for and lots of motivation to make some changes. Even a 5-7% modest decrease in his body weight as he is overweight will make a big difference in improving his diabetes control. He does not need to give up sugar. He does need to start eating a much more healthy overall diet including veggies & fruits. One of the best resources for what people with diabetes should eat is the American Diabetes Association book "16 Myths of a Diabetic Diet" by Karen Chalmers. It's on Amazon.com for ~$12 plus shipping. I highly recommend this newly updated book. Your library may have it. Also, it would be good for him to attend somem diabetes management classes at a local hospital -- provided they are taught by a CDE (certified diabetes educator) who is up to date on the latest management/nutrition recommendations for people with diabetes. I'm sure he can do it with your help! So may people have diabetes, and it can be very successfully managed. Comments (11)Hi Michelle, This is day 2 of sleeping on my 2 1/2" elevated bed and day 2 of not having pain in my stomache! Is this for real...it is not much elevation but seems to help. DH will raise it more if I need it. He likes it too...seems to help his sinuses. Three days of taking the apple cider vinegar..just 1 spoon at night. Don't know if it is helping the guts but my throat feels much better and I haven't coughed for 2 days. I found some real tasty applesauce by Motts. Enjoyed that today with toasted rye bread. I eat oatmeal for breakfast and am not a big bread eater..I like speciality breads best. I am one up on you...I'm having my third colonscopy in Aug. and 1 endoscopy. The GI specialist I see for the colonoscopy is not local but I think I will ask my GP to refer my hiatus hernia condition to him as well. If anything developed I would want him taking care of it...he's very thorough. What is a hydascan? I have never had any major surgery. With just DH and I to cook for, our meals have suddenly become sporatic. He likes fried food..not on my list so we are worse than a restaurant. It will settle down and I hope he learns to eat more my style...it will be healthier for him. Thanks for all the food suggestions, it has really helped. I hope you are enjoying a lovely summer weekend and felling well. Keep in touch. If anyone else wishes to contribute ideas or their experiences with acid reflux, please do so.
