A couple of questions. How many people do you need to seat in the living room on an average day? Do you need a full-length sofa or could you get by with a smaller loveseat? (In other words, does someone in the family like to lounge full-length on the sofa while watching TV?) I'm guessing the TV is in the cabinet opposite the fireplace. Can it be moved anywhere else in the room? Right now you have two focal points at opposite ends of the room--the TV and the fireplace. And none of your furniture faces either one. If at all possible, I'd move the TV down closer to the fireplace. Right now, the fireplace is kind of ignored and seems out of place in the room. Is there room for the TV to the right of the fireplace? Then I'd swing the sofa around to face the fireplace and TV. Either have the loveseat at right angles to it to make an "L" shaped conversation area, or have two armchairs, maybe swivel ones, one on either side of the sofa. Move the cat tree to in front of the half of the sliding door you don't use, and put a bird feeder right outside the door. That way, the cats will be able to lounge as they watch their "kitty TV." Then use the end of the room where the TV cabinet currently is for a desk and the computer and maybe a bookcase for storage. Or you could put the curio cabinet there.

You are so welcome, laurensing. You are asking the wrong person for a rug suggestion that is subtle. It's not that I like crazy rugs, but I would go for something interesting. The sofa and art are a starter. For rugs, I do best on craigslist or estate sales, or anthropologie rugs on sale. You can find a quality wool handmade rug for a great price and just bring it straight to the cleaners. The cheap poly rugs are not appealing to me. You were very smart to start with a classic sofa design and color. Looks like the entrance goes right into the living room. If it's right off the street, be careful about a light rug or a rug with a light background, as it will get dirty so fast and a dark rug, especially without a design, shows every little piece of lint (drives me crazy). How large is the space and how many do you typically seat to watch TV? How about when you entertain? How far is it from the end of the fireplace to the window wall? Usually it works for us to divide a long room into two zones. But not necessarily with a sectional. & I'd never put a TV over that fireplace.

Do you have any budget for replacing some pieces? Are you allowed to paint? The room is so dark--one window, dark floor, dark cabinets, and way too much dark furniture. The gray is so gloomy with all that dark furniture. That room needs warm white walls that coordinate with the cabinets. I suggest the following: --Move your living room furniture towards the kitchen area with the upholstered chair facing the window and front door. --Get a small round dining table and put it at the window. Imagine this only minus the banquette. Putting your table there utilizes that space. Drop a clear pendant over the table to let maximun light show through. Ikea has very affordable white tulip tables. Get comfortable, padded dining chairs that can be pulled into the living room. Yep, it means walking from the kitchen a ways with dishes, but that space is wasted right now. A dining table in front of a window is very cozy. --Pull the rug under the sofa so there's a straight, pathway from front door all the way to the back. --Replace massive coffee table with nesting one, up on legs, light top, round shape. This idea: That's all you have room for.
