Upgrade color and cabinet advice

I just bought my first home. I want to update it. I've been looking at ideas but my a.d.d. kicks in and I get stuck looking for hours. I know I like the color schemes with the Grey's and blues but not sure on what colors to put where to make it all flow together. Should I have wood, or colored cabinets things like that

Before you make any design changes, live in as is for at least 6 to 12 months. See how the house works and feels in different lights, seasons. While doing that, live on houzz for a bit gathering up ideabooks of rooms. Then revisit the thought of making changes - by then you'll know what drives you batty, not so batty and it ain't so bad after all, and oh ,there was a reason why it's laid out this way!

I agree with mostly leaving it alone for now. It’s been updated, so all you need is to add your own style with furniture and decor. I would look into replacing the front door assembly. A more modern unit would make a huge difference in that space, but without seeing the exterior, it’s impossible to be sure that’s right for the house.

Hello, you did not indicate the pitch of your house; is it steep or conventional. A conventional pitched house you can safely walk on it without needing safety equipment. Also do you have a Traditional house, or when which has gabled sides: a Traditional house is essentially a rectangle or box, with a roof. If it's gabled, there is a part of the house (such as the garage) which is right angles to the rest of the box. As a result, a gabled house will have valleys between the 90 degree roof lines which channel into the gutter. Also,typical seemless gutters are made of steel; they will sooner or later rust out. If you clean the debris out once or twice a year (if you have trees) and if they are pitched correctly (so there is not an inch of water sitting in the gutter for months at a time inthe winter) your gutter may last 30 plus years, but may also rust out in as little as 15. I have old growth Douglas Fir about 60 feet behind my house and the storms come from that direction. I have had to clean my gutter as often as twice a year as the years have gone buy (I have lived in this house 21 years). Neighbors are replacing their gutters due to rusting out. I live in the maritine Pacific NW where it rains or drizzles 8 or more months a year. My gutters were looking awful (algae growing). I thought about painting the gutters black, but I realized I'd be replacing them anyway if my neighbors experience was a clue. I had inexpensive screens inserted (Home Depot). They did infact keep needle debris from clogging the gutters, but about 10% of the water would drip off the gutters in front of the garage. I enter through this area and the drips were obnoxious. I decided to research the various gutter usytems. Many of the feedback seems to have been written by marketing people, you can tell there is one out there that wants everyonce to only consider a stainless steel micro filter system (wouldn't work for me, as would grow algae and the screens need to be pressure washed or scrubbed with detergent). Plus, with the needles and debris resting on the screens, water will still cascade over the entry points of the house. I decided on the Leaf Guard. I know that economically, better simply to pay someone twice a year to clean out the gutter and blow off the roof. Prices have gone up and mowadays its $125 to clean out the gutters so $250 a year. The Leaf Guard is expensive ($3000 to $5000) typically but is made of thick aluminum (won't rust out). Also comes in about 12 colors (the seemless steel gutters are typically, white, pimer, or brown). If I went with a steel gutter; I'd have to have it painted. Anyway, I have the money so I went with the Leaf Guard (there is a Helmet Guard suystem; but this is attached to the roof edge, plus I'd still have a 21 year old steel gutter). Anyway, I have a traditional house with a standard pitch and with driving rain, it works as advertised without the obnoxious run off of water I experienced with the vinyl screens I had tried. I chose the coral grey (charcol black) finish and it is very attractive; it belend in with the roofline and is not noticible at all....I went with the optional cleanout screens at the bottoms of the downspouts, and during a heavy rain, when I remove these and look, the water appears as tap water, the screens are clean of debris so looks like the reverse curve system is doing what it is supposed to. One of the competitors makes fun of the Leaf Guard system as the original patent (not made by Leaf Guard) was applied for in the 1890s. They were not stupid then and all the modern machines we take for granted were made first in the late 1800s. If you have a steep pitched roof or with valleys easpecially near the entry of your house, the Leaf Guard (or any other leaf proof system) may not be to your liking. Just expect to pay $250 a year to keep things clear (or do the work yourself). If you can stand heights, you can walk along the edge of the roof and use a leaf blower when the weather is dry....I got tired of doing THAT.

I think I have said this before. In my view, doing inset cabinets with concealed hinges is a huge mistake. They are large and unwieldy inside the cabinet. Why are you so determined to do inset if you don't want to see hinges? Personally, I think that hinges are what help create the charm of inset cabinets. At the Rutt price point, asking about charges for extras is just silly. Your KD is right. I keep my steak knives in my utensil drawer too even though we designed the knife insert for both steak knives and prep knives. I don't love the knife insert (some of the larger knives stick out a bit too much) but I hate keeping things on the counter. The spice ramp is really great, however. And my utensil drawer was designed well. It holds both sets of my cutlery, one on each side with the middle for serving pieces (and now my steak knives). No, I did not see the MSRP nor did I ask for a specific discount. I just kept asking at several points whether he could do better and I knew when to stop. Everyone has to win in a negotiation. He knew I wanted him to sharpen his pencil. I knew he wanted to get the business. He knew he was going to get the business, since I had to pay a retainer for him to come out and do the measurements that allowed him to do the detailed plans in the first place. I liked him and he liked me. We developed trust. That's how we did business. I did not play KDs off against one another. I went to three cabinet shops in Manhattan with a rough idea of my design. I got three estimates. One for Signature at a local place in my neighborhood. Signature was her top brand. Then I went to two other shops that sold both Rutt and Signature. The first place was ok but I thought the shop was a bit unappealing, which spoke to me about the KD's design capability. The second and third places were much higher end and I felt more comfortable with their expertise. It came down to personality of the KD at each. The estimates were really just to figure out what order of magnitude i was going to be dealing with. i knew perfectly well that the estimate would vary considerably from what I would end up with. I have never heard of Quality. The only other line I even considered was Signature. Their custom line, which is relatively new, is meant to compete with Rutt Regency.

It is likely going to cost you far more than $5,000 to change cabinets out later. It will also be a hassle after moving into a new place to rip out old ones, find new ones that fit the old boxes (if you do/can keep boxes...if you can’t, add a lot more than $5,000), what happens if there is damage to boxes or backsplash or counter during - lol, add another few thousand dollars! Add labour costs if you are hiring labour too. Soft close on drawers I would do during the build. Soft close on cabinets you can easily add yourself after closing if you want, depends how much builder is charging for that line item if worth it to you. Another factor to consider might be whether you can roll that $5,000 into mortgage or it will be cash out of pocket. If $5,000 will get you what you really want now, then go for it. But if you are going to be compromising even going with the $5,000 upgrade, stick with the “included cabinets” and save your pennies for new cabinets later on. Down the road later on. I can’t tell you if that $5,000 is really that high or not. They don’t warehouse cabinets - they order them at a certain timeline in build, but the builder would have priced out package based on their “standards” where they also usually get bulk discounts as they use them in most homes they build. Yours are a special request upgrade not factored into their pricing. If $5,000 is reasonable or unreasonable really all depends on what the quality differences are, how much cabinetry you have, etc. Cabinets are expensive. Shaker (painted MDF) were standard with my builder which was fine as it is what I wanted and am happy with their manufacturer and construction. But I added a tall pantry cabinet and that was about $2200 CAD. Soft close for drawers (I think ~20 drawers in house) was $270 CAD. Soft close on cabinets (~28 in house) was $400 CAD. It was worth it to us to have it done for close rather than do it after.

It's quite a puzzle to sort out when you aren't starting from scratch! Even then, with so many choices, I'm endlessly impressed with designers, decorators or anyone who is blessed with the "vision" it takes to bring a design challenge into focus and create something beautiful. The honest opinions from your different perspectives has triggered some heated discussions in our house! Design and personal taste bring out some inner passion, LOL... The most complicating factor, for me, is that underlying issue of a house as a commodity vs. a home and the effect that dichotomy has on our decision making. Our taste runs counter to the prevailing "resale value" taste. So, there's probably no way we are going to create a high "resale value" kitchen but we still hope to improve it. I am absolutely in love with cletile! Glo European Windows & Doors, thank you! And I also love the poured concrete idea, or maybe a concrete-look quartz... but there's debate about that in the family, with the other thought running towards a mystery white marble look. Replacing some of the cabinet doors with glass has gone over well so it looks like we'll be doing that for sure and maybe replacing some cabinets next to the sink with shelves... still mulling... We'll be re-reading all these comments over and over during the next month and hope to make some decisions so that we can get started in May. I agree with the others. The house looks like its just been redone. You are excited, to have your new home, and want to start changing things. Dont do that. Leave it as it is. It looks very nice. Wait at least 6 months to a year, and I guarantee you, will know exactly what you want to change, or colors you would like to have, and you wont be redoing everything you think you want right now, at a later date, when you find out, it wasnt right.

Very cool house, just move in and enjoy for a while. I'm not sure I'd introduce blues and greys with that warm flooring. I would def focus on the door and that will be $$$. Also it is kind of hard to see but painting or replacing the switch covers on the kitchen backsplash would be good. Again, hard to tell but looking out the front window, looks like you will need a landscaping plan. Can you show us a pic of the outside?

The pictures from the realtor site had a filter or enhancer on it. The backsplash was just black contact paper. They did a quick paint job to cover flaws you can tell they had started updating just stopped. I'm going to post unfiltered pics in a little bit.

Yep this is what you get when realtors suggest 'updating' for resale. It's a HUGE waste of money. They made some popular fad choices that are not YOURS. I wil bet you paid not one more dollar than you would have if they had done nothing so all that money is now flushed. You have the added weight of gutting what was JUST redone. Such a waste!!

Why would they paper what could have just been paint? Anyway. Do you have any inspiration pictues? How long have you had a particular 'dream kitchen' in your head? What is your budget and priorities?

I love the way the fireplace wall divides the space in the house. I think you could really use a kitchen designer. The kitchen space is a little odd, but you could make better use of it. If you want more assistance here, draw a floorplan on graph paper so we can understand the dimensions. Where the railing is next to the island, is that stairs to the lower level?

Right now I just want to get do the paint and fix the cover ups he did and the trim. Probably just paint and set the doors on the cabinets to where they shut. I plan on getting new cabinets and floor in the kitchen because there's spots where he didn't make it level. I just spent a lot of $$ on windows for the whole place. So I'm just focusing on the smaller stuff, but still makes it more home for my son and I

OMG, my sincere apology. Those filters were so ........convincing. i would still advocate for waiting and living in before making structural changes, but so now understand your eagerness to create something really actractive to live in. Yes agree, as you have said do some of the smaller things. Develop the big picture so when you are able to start making bigger changes, you have a cohesive plan. The starting point is getting your inspiration pics and listing what the common elements are that appeal to you, then working the elements together for you.

Congratulations on your new home. Your priorities are good: replace windows and prevent water intrusion. Do what you can within your budget so you're happy in the kitchen. A new one will be expensive, so feel good using this one while you save up.

I understand all this a bit more too. windows are always a priority, as is roofing, and plumbing and electrical. You can use lighter blue greens, with your floors. I would go that route, rather than blue and gray. Enjoy your new home.
