My North Carolina Trip (long w/photos)
Comments (7)Awesome! Very nice, Mike. I love that corn snake and mole kingsnake. And as always, your photography is spectacular. Especially that copperhead shot. That oughta be in a field guide. I'm driving from the Smokies to Wilmington in late June. If you know of any places that you could point me to (by email of course), I would definitely love to hear them. Or if you know of anyone that I could contact, let me know. I'm hoping to have a great two week herping adventure. Once again, awesome pictures, and thanks for posting. Definitely worth the wait....See MoreNorth Carolina Mavens -Can you help?
Comments (16)bestyears, while you are waiting for more good advice from others, I'll chime in here. As far traveling between Atlantic Beach and the Outer Banks, I would do one or the other. My choice would definitely be OBX! There is good bit of travel time between the two, long country roads and lengthy ferry ride. You will be at the mercy of the ferry schedule from Cedar Island to Ocracoke and this time of year you certainly need to have reservations so not to be stranded. (you can find out more online on the NC Ferry system website) Once in Ocracoke, you have to drive up to catch another ferry over to Hatteras and above, though those are short and run frequently and are free I think. So, just be aware of the need for a lot of time to get nowhere, if that makes sense. Part of the charm IMO, but it will probably be lost on teenagers. I have not done the OBX with teens though used to spend a lot of time there when DS was younger. But as for visiting the first time, I would suggest somewhere like Hatteras  esp. if there is interest in fishing, or around the Kitty Hawk or Nags Head areas. That way you'll have more to do around you but be more centrally located if you want to explore the more remote areas like going north to Corolla or south to Ocracoke. (My personal favorite, but it is quaint, laid back and no ocean front housing) Hanging out at the beach will be a lot of fun for teens so I would try for ocean front or easy access. IÂm sure there are plenty of water sports possibilities in addition to sight seeing. We always enjoyed the Wright Brothers museum, the NC aquarium and visiting JockeyÂs Ridge State Park where there is a huge sand dune w/hang gliding. ThereÂs lot of info online. I always like to check out tripadvisor.com to see what people have to say about places I visit. IÂve also used the Insiders Guide books when visiting new places. Sorry I canÂt help with recent info. I don't live too far from there but haven't made the trip in a while. I look forward to getting back there soon. I hope that you enjoy it! FC...See MoreOn The Road Again....Greenville SC this time.
Comments (23)Monday update: Drove to Asheville on Saturday, enjoyed Tina Fey's audio book on the way. Met an ex-now-retired co-worker of my dh's and went to the Corner Kitchen for dinner. Excellent meals all around. (If anyone goes, do NOT follow your gps to get there, the address is wrong and you end up in the valet parking for a hotel down the street--call the restaurant and get an alternate address to use for your gps) Sunday spent the day at Biltmore, Took the regular tour and also the architect tour so we were able to get up on the balconies and roof! And also took the servant's tour and got to see the sub-basement, how it all worked behind the scenes--very Downton Abbey. Got to Greenville last night, the Goat is right next to our hotel, maybe tonight for dinner. Last night we went to Tupelo Honey, just opened last Tuesday--excellent dinner! gotta go......See MoreRoad Trip to Charleston, South Carolina
Comments (11)I live in Charleston! If you are coming this week, you will have great walking weather. The Garden/Plantation tours are a must (there are 3) all on the same road in succession to each other. Middleton is the the most elaborate, then Magnolia and then Drayton Hall which is a Plantation House only. Downtown Market Street is the where the tourist trap, I mean open air market is and there are lots of Shops and restaurants. Be sure to park in a parking garage. King street is THE shopping district downtown and withing walking distance from Market Street. Just strolling around town on foot is fun. Lots of side alleys with beautiful architecture. The Battery has a lot of large historic houses that can be toured (for a price) as well. Of course, you can book a walking tour or Carriage ride if you like, but really not necessary. Sadly, you won't get to experience the gardens in bloom. They are a sight to behold when they are in their full bloom glory end of March and through April (depending on weather). Be sure to try Shrimp and Grits or She Crab Soup at pretty much any restaurant and grab some Benne Wafers from a vendor on Market Street. Just know when driving into Downtown, the streets are kind of narrow and there are many that one way. It can get confusing. Have fun!! And share your pics!...See MoreFunkyart
