Updating the kitchen&walls are accessible beige -what cabinet color?

last modified: 2 years ago

Hi all!
We will be updating our kitchen in the spring and i am trying to figure out what color cabinets go with accessible beige walls?
We have an open layout living room to kitchen there is not much wall in the kitchen area but whatever is there the accessible beige.
I had my heart set on light gray cabinets and mostly white quartz and some kind of white ish backsplash... i cant find / decide on a gray that goes with accessible beige.
The kitchen windows are northwest facing.
I completely underestimated choosing colors for the kitchen cabinets/quartz/backsplash =O feeling overwhelmed.
Any input / help is much appreciated, thank you in advance.

I agree about aesthetic white, as it leans slightly into gray, which is what you want.

You paint WALLS to harmonize with the major decision, which is cabinetry!!!! I understand you have your heart set on light gray cabinets. .........up to you, but a major commitment on a palette that is waning......

But. You begin at the cabinet gray....not locking yourself into an existing wall color.

Before any and all? You make sure on layout, ( convenience of appliances, storage ) what is the flooring, etc. and you need to much more clearly define the word "refresh" for good advice. Add pictures of the space as is NOW.

If you look online there are some interesting results on the search word 'accessible grey' including narration and descriptions below.
Here are some of answers and some choices.

Is accessible beige lighter than agreeable gray?

Accessible Beige LVR is 58 and Agreeable Gray's LVR is 60, therefore Agreeable Gray is slightly lighter. Also Agreeable Gray is a slightly cooler color, (hence the word gray in the name) while Accessible Beige is warmer, more beige

When did you last paint the walls? If you have all fresh paint and other elements--the walls will have to be freshened also. I am going to assume you ADORE the beige and that is why it is your jumping off point. Colored/painted cabinetry is a completely personal /individual choice. Chances are fair it is not a choice anyone else would ever choose., so it should be a color you LOVE. If you never fell for a specific gray cabinetry color like you did your wall color perhaps it's a sign to rethink the gray?

I agree backwards . Wall color alwyas last. The first thing IMO is to make sure lighting in all the spaces is the same and I like LED 4000K, you can do 3500K but lower than that will be yellow for sure. Everything ABC said I repeat.

Painting cabinets is a huge commitment, so be really confident in choice. After close to 24 hours in total to repaint ours, I hated the flooring and cabinets together. Ended up painting lowers black on a whim and thank goodness I loved the result. This article may be helpful, but there is a lot to consider.

With living room open to kitchen, ensure rooms are complementary overall, ie: is there grey in living room. Imagine the combo: AB (if decided on), grey, flooring (major factor), white, living room’s furniture and decor. Will it work?

Natural light will have an big effect on paint’s result. Test AB and some greys and note how they look during the day and at night. Way too early to be considering counter and backsplash.

If AB is final decision for wall color, I’d go a few shades lighter on cabinets, such as Alsbastar. White counters/backslash/hopefully flooring would work better, so kitchen is less broken up and more neutral to flow with living room. Also consider AB on cabinets, as you mentioned there isn’t a lot wall space. Either way, backsplash choices really open up. Highly suggest looking at lots of inspiration pictures to save any regrets.

    Thanks for your responses!

To answer some questions - we just bought the house and the accessible beige was freshly painted, I do really like the color it works really well and i am not really wanting to repaint it - hence the unanticipated dilemma. But, if I have to repaint so my choices make sense I will 🥲🤪.

The kitchen is in full view from the living room completely open between those two rooms. It gets NW light and the current lighting is daylight which I want to switch to bright white.

Unfortunately, we probably won't be able to do refinish the floor and update kitchen at the same time so we had to prioritize. The floor is hardwood and is in good condition but the kitchen which we use very often is 25 yrs old and really needs updating. cabinets seem to be wood abled to be sanded. I'm not married to the gray paint, I just didn't anticipate it not working out.

I'm looking to see if there is a color that'll satisfy my gray idea and coordinates well with the freshly painted accessible beige. since you all are experienced - i figured i would try to ask here.

I've been googling but its a lot and did not really fit my situation as my walls are already done. Just trying to figure all of this out to get the best results. I'm going to sample alabaster and aesthetic white to see how it looks.

I appreciate the reccomendations and education.

I attached some photos of before AB paint, after AB paint in different lighting .

Picture information -> pic 1 is flooring we will be trying to match. 2 and 3 prior to accessible beige, pic 4-6 is it accessible beige with Swiss coffee fire place, and then more AB pictures of kitchen in different lighting.

Your FLOORING is a lot bigger consideration than wall paint or cabinet paint. Decide that first. Do it first. It drives all the rest. It's a sand on site? It's an engineered you can sand?

It's quite red, and no gray cabinets please.

Congrats on the new house! The living room and kitchen are so integrated that they are one room. What do you plan for the colors in the living room? I would think you might want to coordinate with the living room colors. It is so much easier to repaint walls than anything else, that I wonder why you would allow someone else's decision to paint accessible beige all through your house to dictate everything else. If that last picture with the fireplace is still "accessible beige", it's an impressive illustration of the power of light reflected off the floor. It looks like a light orange. That's an important thing to consider. I assume you are refinishing the floors first? Can you please say what stain you will use? Can you also tell us about the color scheme for the living room? Maybe you have furniture pictures from your previous home?

WAIT. This is a new to you space 25yrs old it is IMO due for a toatl upgrade not a paint job. See how the kitchen functions for the next min 3 months then drcide what to do with the cabinets but hoestly 25 yr old cbinets are I bet dated in style and the floors need doing no matter what but right now just STOP Way too soon to do major work in a new to you home.
