Colorado is a lot warmer than here. I grow several climbers. They lose their canes down to the ground here because of the dry air, not the temperature. There are people who grow climbers in New England, but they get 30 inches of rain a year. I moved Zephirine Drouhin to the shade after studying Zeffy Rose's pictures of her massive Zephirine Drouhin. She has a lot of shade. Zephirin Drouhin makes some blossoms for me now. Most climbers bloom on old wood, so choosing a repeat climber might be a better idea. They bloom on new wood. ZD blooms for me on the north side, with shade from noon to dark. I also have Dutchman's Pipe there and P. G Hydrangea and Annabelle Hydrangea. P.G. blooms here in August, Annabelle blooms in June, and Zd blooms in July. There's also Ash leaf spirea, which is just about done blooming. Madame Plantier and alba maxima are very tough here. I haven't tried growing them in shade.

If the barrels rot I'll just do something with rock, I like rock more anyway but I figured I would start with what I have. *** I understand. But I have done precisely what you plan to do, and NOW I know why I was advised not to do it. We come back, however, to the basic problem. If you have too much shade for morning glory, you have WAY too much shade for roses. There are some climbing fuchsias. I have one -- F. hatchsiae, which is commonly sold as F. regia. It is a climbing, vining species fuchsia, immune to fuchsia-gall-mite, and blooming all over in a cloud of teeny red flowers. That might tolerate your conditions, and I do actually grow it in a monstrous glazed pot. I have another wonderful climbing fuchsia, but the label was lost, so I have no clue what it is. Jeri

Thanks so much everyone! Now at least I know that Bourbons can do OK without a cold winter. I never spray anything anymore, so the mildew is a problem. I now remember that years ago I did try Zephirine Drauhin and Madame Isaac Perriere. Unfortunately, ZD turned white from mildew (the entire bush, including the blooms), and stayed that way, unless I drenched it with fungicide every day. Also no luck with MIP - 100% balling of the flowers. I got tired of going out each morning to open them manually, although when 1 in 100 did open successfully, they were gorgeous. So, maybe I will try "local knowledge", and try growing Pierre de St. Cyr or Mlle Blanche Laffitte. Noisette and/or china in their makeup might help. We are at least 5 miles from the ocean here, but only 4 blocks from SF Bay. Hot dry summers, but we do sometimes have foggy/ overcast Springs. Campanula, I smiled at your comment that they might get very large in our warm climate. The ONLY roses I have in my garden (aside from some sad HTs and some other roses that are growing in shade) that are NOT huge are miniatures and a few polyanthas. The rest of them seem to feel that it is necessary to get at least 3 times larger than the rose books say they will. I know better now, but when I was first planting roses 20 years ago I did not. Consequently our garden is sprinkled with free standing structures and large arches that my husband had to build after the fact to support roses that I planted that were not supposed to be "climbers". Actually, some of them probably are not climbers - they are just 10' x 10' x 8' . Jackie

I feel your pain, Rehka! Houston is a challenging rose climate. Hot and humid punctuated by surprise attacks of hail, Blue Northerns, hurricanes, floods and tornadoes! I grew up in Dallas but visited Houston off and on...(dramatic music)...in the summer. I also feel your husband's pain: Asian jasmine and trumpet vine in TX. A patch of neglected Asian jasmine once ripped off the bathroom window screen at my sister's house in Dallas! I think the hardy jasmine you mentioned might be Trachelospermum jasminoides, star jasmine? If so, I applaud you 100%! That's a great go-to fragrant vine for much of TX. I sent my mom a rooted cutting of Zeph for her Dallas garden, and it grew well there. I think Mom's rose lost about 50%-60% of its leaves during the hottest part of the year, but Zeph was pretty darn healthy (no spray except Safer fungicide) and grew fresh leaves when the temps cooled. Mom planted her Zeph in half day sun and grew a vine through the canes. Zeph rests for a longer summer stretch without blooming in TX, and your climate is getting hotter, so I agree that selecting a cultivar with more continuous bloom and foliage cover might be a wise choice for your preferences.. With training, Blush Noisette makes a charming, continuously blooming climber up to about 8' or so. It works well on an arch when 2 are planted, one on each side. The fragrance positively WAFTS in the evening. Humidity contributes to wafting so maybe BN is worth considering for Houston? For a large pergola, I'd plant a BN on one side and a yellow or white Lady Banks on the other. I'd train the Lady Banks up one side and across the top for a magnificent spring show with BN to carry on later in the season. Antique Rose Emporium sells both, but sometimes you have to jump in at the starting gate of restocking. They're popular! I'd call ARE and ask about blackspot tendencies in your area, and check on BN's resistance as well as inquiring about other Noisette possibilities. I'm a big fan of the fragrant, glorious Noisettes but only grow BN and MAC here in Portland. I've never grown Renae but have heard great things about it. I have a couple of baby Annie Laurie McDowells in my driveway pot nursery and am super excited about their inclusion in my garden! If you can get a ALM, and Kim Rupert gives it a thumbs up for your area and pergola, I'd absolutely hold out for her. The photos I've seen are breathtaking! Pure romance. Carol
