Granted, you may have a micro-climate going there what with the shelter and the heat radiating brick...but still. Climbers are so problematic in zone 4, even 5. And then only THREE hours of sun??? I just don't see this as a place for a rose. You must know that 6 hours is the recommended minimum amount and you're talking about half of that. Roses can "tolerate" shade, but they don't do their best. Furthermore, these roses you've mentioned are either not hardy enough to have canes winter over, or just not "climbers" in your zone, but short shrubs. I really would suggest you re-think this plan to put any of these roses there.

No enough sun. Anytime a northerner reads "shade tolerant" about a rose, remember that this may work out in the south but up here our roses need all the sun they can get.

And agree with Annececilia re: hardiness issue. Try looking into one of the Canadian Explorer roses. But not in that spot.

But Colorado isn't that far north... this poster is probably in high mountains, though. If it's a question of sun intensity or growing season, she might be more able to get away with it than someone further north.

I agree that it's pushing it and this probably is not a rose spot, but I did want to point out that high altitude, but further south, is quite different than, say, Edmonton.

Would there be reflected light from the other building? That could be significant.

I suggest you consider 'Madame Plantier.' This hybrid alba is easily zone 4 hardy, disease resistant, and shade tolerant. The flowers are beautifully formed and fragrant. It climbs if supported and drapes down elegantly. Blooms for around 4 weeks. It does need deadheading.

I doubt any repeat bloomer would repeat significantly in that situation.

Colorado is tough on roses because you can get everything leafed out and growing and then there will be a sudden snowstorm or hard freeze. Anything in that short of a growing season deserves at least 6-8 hours of sun as well. And once bloomers--if that late freeze happens just as the buds are developing, there goes your entire blooming season.

I'd try something else. Think about it...a healthy plant, happy in its spot, vigorous, might be more satisfying than a struggling rose with a lot of winterkill that doesn't bloom much. Climbing Hydrangea, perhaps?

I have Darlow's Enigma, Gertrude Jekyl and Stanwell Perpetual.
I wouldn't be able to grow any of these as a climber. Well...maybe GK, but her canes are really stiff and she's not a heavy bloomer. Darlow's Enigma is hardy, but it is more bushy than a climber. Stanwell Perpetual is a very slow grower and is more like a low bushy rose than a climber. I do have Viking Queen, but this is her first year so I can't comment yet. I've had Veilchenblau for 5 years and love this climber. It is growing up into my maple tree and gets very limited sun...but it is growing like a beast! It is a once bloomer. It blooms heavily for 2 weeks in June.
I would look into the Explorer series or a rambler.

While I am a rose newbie I do have a thought about our altitude in Colorado. Since we are closer to the sun, the rays are more intense, so maybe that will compensate for some of the fewer hours of sunlight. I would try one or two of the roses on your list in the ground in that area and see how they do for a year or two. Or you could go with the pot ghetto until you know how they'll do. I have no experience with the roses on your list, so I can't comment further. Good luck!

I was thinking about the more intense sunlight. My guess is it wouldn't help much. I'm guessing rose leaves evolved to make optimal use of light intensities in their native habitats and simply wouldn't be able to use excess. Kind of like, if you take too much Vitamin C, you just eliminate it (er, it's water soluble). But that's just a wild guess.

Well, the lack of cloud cover and air pollution would certainly help. Years ago I read an article about growing roses on the north side of the house in Arizona. It said the north sky produces enough solar radiation to keep most plants growing (in Arizona).

The heleneae hybrids are fairly shade tolerant ramblers and are quite common in Sweden. I grow Lykkefund up a plum tree and it blooms with very little sun.

Colorado is a lot warmer than here. I grow several climbers. They lose their canes down to the ground here because of the dry air, not the temperature. There are people who grow climbers in New England, but they get 30 inches of rain a year. I moved Zephirine Drouhin to the shade after studying Zeffy Rose's pictures of her massive Zephirine Drouhin.
She has a lot of shade.
Zephirin Drouhin makes some blossoms for me now. Most climbers bloom on old wood, so choosing a repeat climber might be a better idea. They bloom on new wood.
ZD blooms for me on the north side, with shade from noon to dark. I also have Dutchman's Pipe there and P. G Hydrangea and Annabelle Hydrangea. P.G. blooms here in August, Annabelle blooms in June, and Zd blooms in July.
There's also Ash leaf spirea, which is just about done blooming.
Madame Plantier and alba maxima are very tough here. I haven't tried growing them in shade.

I don't think that the distance from the sun on a mountain top in Colorado affects the sun's intensity. I would think that the lack of pollution up there is a major factor however.

Kaylah, got pics? Do you winter-protect your Zephy? Mine is finally starting to come into it's own, but I typically get significant cane dieback. It sure would be a lot better if it didn't have to regrow every year. :o(

Robert, I don't think it's the lack of pollution so much as the thinner atmosphere overall. You will burn a LOT faster at those altitudes as a result.

I have an 'Alba Semi-plena' that is completely cane hardy to the tips and is thriving on the North side of my house and gets only about 1 hour of direct sunlight in the evening.

These pics are from July, the new growth has actually reached the rain gutters as of last week.

I also have 'Alba Maxima', it gets about 3 hours of midday sun and has yet to have more than 10 blooms on a 8' x 5' bush... completely cane hardy.

Either of these could be trained to a wall with a trellis, I let mine arch as it wills.
