fragrant climbing rose to grow in container
Comments (1)You can grow just about any rose in a container if you right-size the container for the expected final size that you want the plant to reach or at least close, as they won't grow as large as ground-planted ones. You might also want to be prepared to transplant it up as it gets bigger if you do want more size. The big climbers tend to be very aggressive growers and could outgrow even a large container quickly unless you keep the plant well-pruned (including the roots). I have been debating trying some again after having grown a small-flowering variety in a container for a number of years. I think I have run out of room though! LOL...See MoreCourtyard climbing rose on a container
Comments (3)I would say that container is way too narrow. Get yourself a REALLY big container -- Biggest one you can find. Think about the size of the TOP of the plant, and consider that it needs nearly that much root, to support it. Roses don't grow a long, narrow "taproot." They grow a network of spreading roots, so a pot shaped like that is not ideal. Also, one of those molded plastic pots is better than ceramic. (Yeah, I like ceramic pots too. But roses don't much like them.) Also, I recommend that you get a pot with many drainage holes. Then, set it up on three bricks (or fancy "pot feet") so that water can drain freely out of it. (Do NOT set it in a saucer.) If that is open dirt with mulch, next to the pot, you'd be better to set it there, than on concrete....See MoreHelp me choose container climbing roses for an Italian balcony
Comments (30)I haven't found 'Colombia' here so far. Do you think 'Felicia' would be happy in a pot in the heat? I've read that it could be trained as a short climber and HelpMeFind lists it as suitable for containers. Same questions for 'Eglantyne'. I also noticed a climbing 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' (stingy repeater?) and a climbing 'Yves Piaget' (the regular version blooms all summe here) in a catalgoue which I can't find much info about. I love Boncrow's suggestion of Clothilde Soupert but the climber sounds like it gets pretty big too....See MoreAdvice for growing climbing roses on a terrace, please.
Comments (21)I have no head for heights and that makes me feel a bit giddy but it must be fun to look out from there on a sunny day... I think I would grow the rose up the wall on the left and a clematis along the railings.. I would plant the clematis on the right at the corner junction to train the clematis along both railings. However, depending where the sun rises, you might find most of the flower stems try to grow on the other side of the railings away from you and some pulling back in and training this side may be necessary, so you get the most benefit. I'm not sure if I would use 2 individual pots rather than 1 large one. I grow a rose in a pot that's much smaller... it's about 1 foot from front to back, about 2 and half feet lengthways, and about 2 feet deep. The rose I grow in it is 'Benjamin Britten' and it's been there for 3 seasons now and is thriving. It will be good for another 3 I should think and I won't change the soil until I see signs of deterioration. It's about 5 foot tall and I've had about 4 flushes this year, and it's trying for a 5th but the weather has cooled.. I grow bulbs, Pelargoniums, Violas, Candytuft, along with the rose during summer.. nothing too invasive rootwise though. 9th Sept '16 'Benjamin Britten' in a pot... ..you can see a glimpse of my container here below, it's quite narrow across the top. I was taking a photo of my Molinia 'Karl Foerster'. I know I'm a long way off but just trying to give you some encouragement. Hope all goes well.......See Morepetsitterbarb
