How to deal with Vertigo

Does anyone here suffer from vertigo. i have had it for years off and on. Have gone for physio for head manipulation, that seem to help for a while. Just wondering how others deal with it.

I've had it off and on for years. The thing that works best for me is the same medicine Elmer was given, Meclizine. It seems to come and go with no rhyme or reason to it.

I do as you do. I go for head manipulation as needed.

I also do the home Epley maneuver.

What happens during the home Epley maneuver?
Start by sitting on a bed.
Turn your head 45 degrees to the right.
Quickly lie back, keeping your head turned. ...
Turn your head 90 degrees to the left, without raising it. ...
Turn your head and body another 90 degrees to the left, into the bed. ...
Sit up on the left side.

I find that if I make sure to take really good care not to to tense up that my vertigo is at least manageable. I really think for me it is a problem of my ear balance and when I tense up whatever is going on in my ear gets irritated.

I have Menieres and get vertigo occasionally, I keep Dramamine handy. I also have positional vertigo and I just take care not to do those things that bring that on.

As long as this is on the ear & problems, may I ask this seemingly crazy question?: I can make my ears "click'! At first I would just notice it when I swallowed but then realized I can do it at will .... the 'clicking' but doctors just looked at me like I was kidding! My sister has it also & says her son can actually hear it when she does it! Now is this crazy or what or can others do it.. & is is heriditary? I was told people are told to try & do this in airplanes to eqalize the pressure but a lot of persons find it difficult to do ... surely not ME!! Sorta like 'cracking one's knuckles' out of boredom?! Sorry for this distraction! My sister-in-law has the ear problem of this type of vertigo for years & also was shown how to lay down in the proper position & do the things mentioned by others. It helped for a while but soon the vertigo took over her life & she was an invalid from it! Had a surgery to severe a nerve in that ear but was warned she might lose her hearing in that ear permanently ... and she did! She says losing the hearing was less worse than the awful vertigo/vomiting/falling she experienced before!

Sushipup, and Emma, thanks for the responses, as I knew before I wrote there was no "cure" I was hopeful to find out if there would be some exercises to sort of keep the darn thing at bay.I have no idea what brings it on, I flip sides all nite to assure that crystals hopefully stay where they belong, and use the dizziness patch so that I can get around. That is such a nasty life if you can't get something of a handle on it. Seems to come in waves, I can go months without trubble, and then there it is, but I believe is my own fault, I am in the midst of garden cleanup here, and lots of bending with head lower that knees sometimes, that really triggers things, but I want to live a somewhat normal life, so I do keep that ace tucked in my pocket. For those that never have something like this, I surely hope they are grateful it doesn't happen to them Thanks again for the responses, much appreciated, and sooo glad to know I am not alone, is good to stick together. I do try those exercises and doc has given me sheets of stuff to try, but sometimes it lasts longer than I care to have it!!!!!!!!!!

For others that might be interested: My story (Moni): I woke up one morning feeling like my whole room was spinning. Putting a foot down on the floor like when you had to much to drink did not help. I did manage to get to the bathroom, but then had a bad episode, and found myself on the floor. I wasn't sure, which way was up. All this, shortly after we had moved. I didn't have a Dr. yet. I didn't know, what was wrong with me. I kept laying down, some in front of the TV. Almost all my laying down was on my right side. Later I realized, my vertigo was brought on by laying on my right side. I sleep exclusively on my left side now. I don't toss or turn anymore. I used to wake up all queasy and sick to my stomach. When we got hold of a Dr. to see me right away, he said, I had Vertigo. He gave me a prescription for something, sorry I don't remember what, but I never filled it. He also suggested the exercises in the link up above, and said, the pills had a lot of side effects, and didn't work for everyone. When I got back home I tried to do the exercises, but got so violently sick when I first laid on my left side, that I had to sit up and fight throwing up. It took me two hours to do a whole set of the exercises that day. Since then, I am mostly fine, but have episodes when I have to do two or more sets of exercises daily. Ceiling fans, whipping your foot while sitting with crossed over legs, watching a train go by are just some of the things that can set me off. Oh, and sleeping in the same bed as Jerry. :) Really, HONEST! Jerry has restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea, and shakes the be almost all night long. Since we went to separate beds (but still in the same room) I haven't had very many episodes. All my troubles began in July 2001. Since then I have ridden my bicycle across the United States, from coast to coast, as well as several other long distance rides. No problems! I have suffered from vertigo episodes for most of my life but sometimes if I am lucky I can go a year without having severe episodes but that is few and far between. Mine all have to do with my ears. When I was a child my family Doctor would have my parents give me Dristan tablets, then I was put on a diuretic to get rid of the water in my body which I took for most of my life but a few years go took myself off because I was getting worried about the damage it might do to my kidneys. Since I stopped taking the diuretic I have more vertigo episodes. Worse feeling ever. Having to crawl on my hands and knees to get to the bathroom. I have prescription pills I take when I have an episode but they knock me right out which is good but one of the side effects for me is my brain feels itchy inside my head and you can't scratch it. Horrible feeling. Sometimes my vertigo can last a few weeks. I have to go to the Doctor to have him flush the wax from my ear, which comes out like hard stones. When my ears start to feel plugged I know I should go in but many times I don't and then I suffer for it when I become dizzy a few weeks later, My Doctor also does the head maneuvers on me which do help a lot and then I do them myself every few weeks on myself. I wouldn't wish vertigo on anyone.

I have it, a recently experienced problem.starting about 6 months ago. It seems to ebb and flow, getting worse and then getting better.

The various maneuvers have not had lasting benefit for me, though I haven't been to a physical therapist and likely do so the next time it flares up. My doctor prescribed the antihistamine Meclizine and I've been taking it. It does seem to help.

As for other ways of dealing with it, I'm careful about my movements. As an example, when in the shower and closing my eyes to shampoo or wash my face, I keep a hand on the wall for stability. For me, dizziness can come when my eyes are closed or when I look down without having a hand on something.

Good luck. Mine seems to be waning this past week. maybe yours will too.

I was on a plane this past week, wonder if the pressure in the plane stimulates it??

Being on a plane can definitely upset your inner ear.

I take an antihistamine and try to take a nap. That usually resets my problem. I have Meniere's so have triggers. I limit salt and that makes a big difference. Some people take a water pill. The reason why you have vertigo makes a difference. Like Elmer I have to be cautious about moving with my eyes closed. I simply lose where I am in space. I have had this since I was in college.

I have Meniere's also. I keep meclizine (Less Drowsy Dramamine or Bonine) with me at all times. Regular Dramamine is dimenhydrinate which is shorter acting and doesn't seem to work as well.

I've only had it once. It happened when I got up after awakening in the morning. It scared me, thought I was having a stroke.

I had it with sudden onset and severe, nauseau inducing. I did the Epley and it helped some, but it wasn't until I did the Foster that it really went away. I've had it once since and did the Foster right away and it was gone. Unfortunately, not everyone can do the Foster, but if you can, I highly recommend it.

DH has had some dizziness and his Dr recommended neck exercises and moving his head around more and moving his eyes around more.

I had vertigo years ago. I found out mine was triggered from cold air. As long as my ears are covered and warm during the winter I'm fine.
