Vestibular therapy-anyone had it?
Comments (18)Starting a few years ago I've had several bouts of BPPV, and as others have said, it's the WORST. I am blessed to be very healthy, and being so dizzy that I cannot function is totally out of my normal experience. I was told to try Brandt Daroff exercises at home before doing any physical therapy. Happy to say that these have worked really well for me, and since you do them at home you can start immediately plus you're already close to bed and a resting spot if (when) you get the spins and nausea as you start the exercises. I do them on my couch which works well. My GP recommended a repetition of 15-20 cycles each session and 2 sessions daily. Since I started doing the Brandt Daroff my episodes have been controllable within a day or so. This compares to my being unable to even go to work for several days at a time with the nausea and dizziness. Yuck, just talking about it gives me the willies. For those who haven't had vertigo, thank your lucky stars. For those who have had vertigo due to BPPV aka ear crystals, give Brandt Daroff a try, it might do the trick for you too. Have linked to a video below that demonstrates. Feel better soon! Here is a link that might be useful: Brandt Daroff Exercise Demo...See MoreVertigo has cramped my style
Comments (15)I had terrible vertigo about every 3 days for 9 months or so. Fine one minute, flat on the floor out of the blue the next. It would last 6+ hours and was awful. Valium and dramamine helped some....prescribed by ear doctor. I had all the tests and treatments including an MRI and nothing showed up. My mom (72) kept digging for an answer. She was having crazy side affects from lipitor. Anyway we kept reading and reading. Finally read the entire phamplet on pills I was taking for Crohns. It was not listed as a side effect, but on the back side of this huge leaflet, towards the bottom, it mentioned toxicity and vertigo. I was taking 9-12 pills a day for the Crohns. The pills base is a Salicylate, which is aspirin. I stopped taking the pills and in a few days started feeling better. I have not taken any more of the pills and have not had vertigo since. Once in awhile I get a light spacey feeling, but nothing like the vertigo. It was awful. I'm sorry you have to go through this. You might check the toxicity part on your medications. You never know. I am so thanful for my mom pushing to find an answer for me. Who would have thought....aspirin!...See MoreFor starters, DH has rocks in his head...
Comments (13)flyonthewall I see you don't have an email link at your page. Here is what I mailed Rita: My story (Moni): I woke up one morning feeling like my whole room was spinning. Putting a foot down on the floor like when you had to much to drink did not help. I did manage to get to the bathroom, but then had a bad episode, and found myself on the floor. I wasn't sure, which way was up. All this, shortly after we had moved. I didn't have a Dr. yet. I didn't know, what was wrong with me. I kept laying down, some in front of the TV. Almost all my laying down was on my right side. Later I realized, my vertigo was brought on by laying on my right side. I sleep exclusively on my left side now. I don't toss or turn anymore. I used to wake up all queasy and sick to my stomach. When we got hold of a Dr. to see me right away, he said, I had Vertigo. He gave me a prescription for something, sorry I don't remember what, but I never filled it. He also suggested the exercises in the link up above, and said, the pills had a lot of side effects, and didn't work for everyone. When I got back home I tried to do the exercises, but got so violently sick when I first laid on my left side, that I had to sit up and fight throwing up. It took me two hours to do a whole set of the exercises that day. Since then, I am mostly fine, but have episodes when I have to do two or more sets of exercises daily. Ceiling fans, whipping your foot while sitting with crossed over legs, watching a train go by are just some of the things that can set me off. Oh, and sleeping in the same bed as Jerry. :) Really, HONEST! Jerry has restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea, and shakes the be almost all night long. Since we went to separate beds (but still in the same room) I haven't had very many episodes. All my troubles began in July 2001. Since then I have ridden my bicycle across the United States, from coast to coast, as well as several other long distance rides. No problems! You can lead a "normal" life even if you have Vertigo problems. After clicking on the link below: scroll down to: HOME TREATMENT OF BPPV: Those are the exercises I do when I have a flare up. Moni PS, you can email me through my page. Mine works. Here is a link that might be useful: vertigo link...See More........Dizziness.......
Comments (28)I never have dizziness in my life, until I got my 1st flu-shot twenty years ago, got so dizzy that I could not wrestle with my toddler. The 2nd flu-shot in 2015 was horrible, the dizziness was so bad that I wished I could die. That flu-shot made my inner ear swollen, my left ear was bleeding, and my nose was bleeding. When I changed position from lying down to sitting up, I saw ceiling rotating, then I vomited from the dizziness. I went to the doc. and he found my ears all plugged up. He suggested rinsing my ears with hydrogen peroxide. That DID NOT HELP. The exercises (recommended by another doc) to disloge the mineral-build-up or crystals in my inner ears DID NOT help. What helped the most was Mayo Clinic's recommendation of rinsing ears with 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol). I let the solution soaked for 5 min. in my ears, and that dislodged some ear-wax. Vertigo was reduced 50%. Went back to the doc, and he sent me to an ENT doc (ear, nose throat specialist). This specialist used a tool to remove the hardened ear wax in both ears, and VERTIGO was gone for good. But the pneumonia (from that 2015 flu shot) lasted for over a month, and was gone with antibiotics. Now 7 years later, I don't have vertigo unless I get too much hard-well water and shampoo in my ears while showering. A five-minute rinse of 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 vinegar helps to disloge the calcium-deposit from hard-well water, plus the shampoo leaves irritating residue that can inflame ears, leading to vertigo. I really should change my shampoo to a more gentle one, like baby shampoo, without harsh chemicals to leave a residue in the ear canals. My husband also had the same problem with 2016 flu-shot. His ears got plugged up with vertigo, so he bought a solution to "melt" the ear-wax, but that got worse. He had to go to an ENT doc to remove the ear-wax. He also got a bad cold right after his flu-shot. He never get any flu-shot afterwards, and zero cold since 2016. I have 3 siblings who are doctors (emergency med., general practice/dermatologist, and internal medicine). The docs in my family told me that flu-shot DOES not help with common cold nor pneumonia, it only helps to prevent a few viral strains that scientists "think" you might catch. Some people also get vertigo as a side-effect of Covid-shots. For that reason, I never have Covid-shots, and I don't catch Covid either as of today, Dec. 1, 2022. Husband never have Covid shots, and he caught a VERY MILD Covid this July 4 which lasts only day, then he ran 6 miles afterward as a 63 year-old-male. After my horrible vertigo with 2015 flu-shot, I never get any flu shot, so far ZERO colds as of today. I eat lots of vitamin-C fruits, drink tons of no-sugar fresh lemon juice, and lots of chicken for zinc., plus sunshine fo vitamin D. Eating well is the best medicine, with zero side-effects like flu shots. I'm 61-year-old....See More- 22 years ago
