DH went to the doctor yesterday. For starters, he has rocks in his head. Well, not literally but - well, yes - I guess literally.

The doctor thinks he has "benign paroxysmal positional vertigo" (BPPV). It's not that uncommon. My mom, sister, and aunt have all had it. Doctors normally treat it by manipulating the neck, but his didn't want to do that because he said DHs neck muscles are way too tight. Gave him muscle relaxers to take for 24 hours, and DH goes back this afternoon.

There are some other issues DH wants to address, but he's OK about starting with something that will hopefully get rid of these dizzy spells and sudden headaches that make him feel sick.

Thanks for the supportive words and suggestions. I've been giving him time and letting him have time to himself in the evenings. He had a very loving relationship with his mother and father but now both of his parents are deceased - it is a shock. He kinda hides out in our bedroom reading newspapers, trade magazines, and watching sports and news after the kids go to bed. He eats breakfast by himself with the newspaper and news on TV. As soon as the kids and I come down for breakfast, he goes upstairs to get dressed by himself. He's managed to schedule a lot of his time to be by himself. On the weekend, he sleeps a lot. Other times he gets charged up by rough housing with the kids. Last weekend, one of my daughters needed help finding something my DH put away. I asked her why Daddy couldn't help her find it if he put it away, and she said, "Is it because Daddy lays around and sleeps a lot?" They say the darndest things. Don't worry, I've never stressed out over housework. I'm more concerned about DHs angry outbursts and extreme withdrawal. Yes, I'm picking up the slack of trying to take care of all the busy needs the kids have in the morning, evening, and weekends but that's not as concerning as the other issues. Our house has already been "let go" as far as cleaning. I'm just trying to do the basics to keep us clean, clothed, fed, and delivered to work and school! I'm sure this will all take time. I don't understand all the tv technology but I can tell you what works for us. TIVO. We have two of them, one for me and one for him. We have a large tv in the living room and if we don't want to watch the same show (kitchen and decorating, him shoot em ups), he sets the tv to" picture in picture", meaning we get 1/2 a screen of my show and 1/2 for him. I have headphones that are wireless so I can hear my show and sit right next to him on the couch, and he listens to his. I can also walk into the kitchen with my headphones and watch what is on my TIVO. Tivo lets you record like a vcr on a hard drive inside the tv, and you can watch whenever you want. That's what works for us, I hope that makes sense. I'm sure it's frustrating but I do agree, having him want to be around you is more important than ANY tv show. Enjoy.

Well I totally agree with Organic, when the child is in your care and you organise a babysitter then that is your business and not the other parents'. The thought of informing BM has never even crossed our mind! And she doesn't ring us about her babysitters either, which is her right. We expect her to look after the kids properly when they are with her, and it is her judgement whether this or that person is ok to have as a babysitter. And if that person is not to our liking than it's stiff sh*t for us really. We actually had a situation a couple of years ago when BM hung out with a bunch of feral people. She got them to look after the skids quite a lot at one stage, and the skids used to dread going to their house because it was dirty and they'd have to sleep on the floor with a thin blanket that stunk like pee. And no I'm not exaggerating.. So FDH offered BM that we can always look after the skids when need be, and we are only 10 mins up the road so it's the same time as to drive to the ferals' place. But noooo, BM was in control of 'her' time and she'd be damned if she'd give us extra time for free, THAT was NEVER going to happen! Very frustrating but you can't do a thing about it. When the skids are with her it's her business. And in Loves case they are NOT dealing with 2 normal parents, BM is a mess, and to inform her is actually endangering SS and the babysitter. That poor girl doesn't need to be harassed by crazy BM. Most of us are here because we are not dealing with a normal parent, otherwise why hang around here if things are fine and both parents are normal? Love don't give BM the babysitters number, no way! BM can ring you guys if there's an emergency and maybe SS can ring her before you guys go, so he's had his phonecall to his mum for the day. And I don't think it's normal she talks to him that much, our BM does the same, exactly the same. She'll neglect the kids when they are with her (used to leave them home alone, go on the piss, promise them heaven but always have a headache when it's crunchtime, keep them out of school, not take them to sports etc etc). But oh boy when they are with us! Constant phonecalls to check if they are ok (it being such a risk to be with us) and making sure we'd take them to sports otherwise she'll come and pick them up herself (MOTY), blabla etc etc. It is controlling and disturbing and I'm frustrated on your behalf that you guys are harassed by this woman so much that it interferes with your normal everyday life. Oh, he learned to pace himself 25 years ago with his first 4 heart bypasses at age 43. Breakfast is never a missed meal and he takes a break to do a blood sugar every 2 hours when he is working hard like this. Karen, the plans were discussed with the township, and this is allowed. It is the only option here as we have no storm sewers...the edge of the road is higher by about a foot than where the drain comes out and there is a shallow ditch between the road and the drain to channel run off water. It really doesn't seem right to me either, but the 'powers that be' say it is. A cute story that goes with this...A 9 year old next door neighbor boy (John was recently diagnosed with Aspergers Autism) when hearing of the upcoming dig that would start on Saturday, was really excited and announced that he was going to help with the digging. The start was delayed till Saturday afternoon due to DH's birthday breakfast out with DD and then we all did the Charity Heart Walk together. When we got home, there was a message on the answering machine from John wanting to know when the digging would start. He was waiting out in the yard with his shovel, a hoe and 2 12" inch rulers since 7 am! His Mother said that she couldn't keep him in the house, because he was sure that he would miss the whole thing if he went in. John did get to help. DH gave him a 5 foot strip to work in that was too tight for the tractor and he was delighted...for about 2 hours. It was hard work and his Mother said that is the longest he has stuck with anything that she could remember

Ummmm, let me see...

Dizziness + muscle relaxers + buzzing of a chainsaw in the distance = hard headed DH

He was supposed to go out and light the burn pile, but I guess he decided it needed more fuel. I quit worrying about him...it's just easier that way.

Thank you Moni for letting us know that you have the same thing. Otherwise I could see lots of folks (read women) jumping on the bandwagon saying it must be a guy thing to have rocks in our heads.
As for the burnpile; if you're going to have a fire it might as well be a big fire. more is always better, right guys?

Me too....I have it...don't know about the rocks...but I get the dizzys and the rooms spinning like I'm training to be an astronaut....I think I failed....lol

Anyway I don't like it...

The meds I take help me a lot.

I had a short spell of dizziness the other day ...

... but then, some folks have said that I've been dizzy for years.

No comment regarding any potential rocks in the head.

Some folks find that some massage is really helpful - for tense muscles.

Don't know about for the BPPWhatever ... or the (possible) rocks.

My mother was just recently diagnosed with this after she suffered a stroke. She's in Texas and goes to a doctor that tells her she has "rocks in her head". She gets pleasure out of telling us that but I never quite understood what she was talking about. If there is some sort of exercise or something that she can do, I'd appreciate any info on the subject to pass on to my brother whom she lives with. Having your mother tell you that a doctor tells her that she has rocks in her head makes me think she's seeing some kind of quack or something!.....but I see now that she was right all along.

See - your Mom has more rocks in her head than you gave her credit for ... and that she claimed to be the case, all along.

Here is what I mailed Rita:

My story (Moni):

I woke up one morning feeling like my whole room was spinning. Putting a foot down on the floor like when you had to much to drink did not help.

I did manage to get to the bathroom, but then had a bad episode, and found myself on the floor. I wasn't sure, which way was up.

All this, shortly after we had moved. I didn't have a Dr. yet. I didn't know, what was wrong with me. I kept laying down, some in front of the TV. Almost all my laying down was on my right side.

Later I realized, my vertigo was brought on by laying on my right side.

I sleep exclusively on my left side now. I don't toss or turn anymore. I used to wake up all queasy and sick to my stomach.

When we got hold of a Dr. to see me right away, he said, I had Vertigo.

He gave me a prescription for something, sorry I don't remember what, but I never filled it. He also suggested the exercises in the link up above, and said, the pills had a lot of side effects, and didn't work for everyone.

When I got back home I tried to do the exercises, but got so violently sick when I first laid on my left side, that I had to sit up and fight throwing up.

It took me two hours to do a whole set of the exercises that day.

Since then, I am mostly fine, but have episodes when I have to do two or more sets of exercises daily.

Ceiling fans, whipping your foot while sitting with crossed over legs, watching a train go by are just some of the things that can set me off.

Oh, and sleeping in the same bed as Jerry. :) Really, HONEST! Jerry has restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea, and shakes the be almost all night long. Since we went to separate beds (but still in the same room) I haven't had very many episodes.

All my troubles began in July 2001. Since then I have ridden my bicycle across the United States, from coast to coast, as well as several other long distance rides. No problems! You can lead a "normal" life even if you have Vertigo problems.
