Updating exterior of late 70s house
Comments (5)You're just looking for a color recommendation? Well, common belief on this forum is that painted brick is not preferred. Does the roof stay? It's hard to tell what color it is presently. And the house is currently mauve? The (black?) shutters stay? I'm a traditionalist. I believe I would do plain old white to go along with the black shutters. You said it's a heavily treed lot so a very light color is probably best. (Unless you'd rather fade the house into its background. Some people do.) Though you didn't ask, I also think a wider, more defined sidewalk would add a lot, along with cutting back the shrubbery at the steps. And I'm envious of your full redbud and blooming daffodils. It was -6 degrees here this morning! 🥶...See MoreUpdating home - Is my order of updates correct?
Comments (21)@User - Not pot lights, but more of a modern style for the dining room and at the base of the stairs - those are both super traditional and its small but has a big impact when you swap them out. If you paint a griege (even lighter maybe than what you mention) it will immediately make your house feel more modern/clean lines. the white is too much of a contrast and isnt' bright like it likely once was. Your tile isn't that bad, the grey/non-tan will pop out with a difference color paint. We did a full house in similar situation a few years ago - changing the spindles/under the steps on the stairway made a MASSIVE change. I couldn't believe what a difference it made. We called around and some places were charging $$$$ to do the stairs, once guy offered to use a sprayer and it was like $500 and done in a day. I had worked on it myself for about 40 hours by that point and realized the bloggers were crazy that thought it was just simple and easy and fast. This house WILL look exactly like you want it too....See MoreHouse Update Ideas
Comments (6)I don’t think your house looks ’dated’ but maybe could use small update to refresh. More pictures taken from different angles & closer up would help generate useful suggestions. I also don’t know about painting siding if it doesn’t need it but the color of the shutters isn’t what I would choose with the red brick. I’d favor green tone shutters - not dark hunter green but more of a sagey tone. Looking at the 2 hanging lights either side of front door - they would have more impact IMO if they hung lower & were larger. That would have a big impact on snazzing up the entry. Looks like there’s one plant pot at door - is it sitting on step? I’d have a large pot on each side of step filled with bright colors or some kind of evergreen that makes a statement. You don’t give us a clue as to location so can’t make suggestions. Are there any shrubs or plantings in yard around the house? That’s a definite area to consider adding to for updates. Need pictures to make any suggestions....See MoreExterior Home Update After Fire
Comments (1)To be honest, I'd change the trim around the windows and door to that cream colour the trim under the gutters is. I think the white is too stark against the brick....See MoreKate
