Radioactive treatment for cat hyperthyroid

gsciencechick
last year

Hi, everyone, we just found out little girl kitty (the one in my profile photo) is now hyperthyroid. I am not surprised because the past couple months she has been out of control with wanting food, and she has lost a little bit of weight even though she is tiny already. We had a hyperthyroid cat before and gave him methimazole, and had regular bloodwork. This was not easy because he was not good with taking pills. So, we want to look into the radioactive treatment since it is available in our area. She is 13. All her other bloodwork is good, but I have to try to get a urine sample.

From what I've read, she will need to be there about 4 days, we can't visit, and then afterwards needs to have limited contact with us and also the other cat. For example, cannot sit in lap and cannot sleep with us or I guess him. How have you handled this isolation? We have a very small house, so we would probably use the guest room since I use the computer room for work.

So, if you have any experience, I'd like to hear from you.
