Kitchen Refresh BM-Gray Owl painted cabinets bad idea?
Comments (15)First, thank you all for the feedback this is why I wanted more opinions. I have more pictures but can't seem to upload more than one at a time. It is nice to hear that at least the cabinets look good from afar. They are not solid cherry if they were solid cherry fronts, I agree I would not be so quick to paint them, they are just a cherry veneer. I included a close up of the cabinets to give you an idea they aren't in great shape. Bee - your kitchen is amazing! thanks for the thoughts. I never noticed the orangey floors but you are right they do look that way and now that I am looking at it, it is overcast from the cabinets. Good idea of painting up a couple of boards, I have little swatches taped all over the space because we get a lot of sun movement in the space throughout the day. The table is 108 inches long, I am drooling over James Moder florale chandelier but need two of them. I don't think I could get DH to agree to three! LOL. A couple of responders noticed the island, the island is a just big box, open box deal, I don't think we paid $300 bucks for it, its a dark stain. Not worth refinishing. I would love to replace the counters, but with the sq ft we need it would be double that of a professional painting the cabinets, and I am really afraid that they would just look worse!...See MoreCabinet Doors in Kitchen: Cherry wood vs. Cherry plywood?
Comments (16)It shouldn't necessarily be possible from a couple feet away to tell whether a given board is veneered or solid. Edge banding is typically a disaster waiting to happen and should be avoided at all costs. MDF panels, if you go that way, can be edged with solid wood, a much more robust solution. With solid wood every board is different, and care and attention has to be paid to color and grain matching. (With factory-made cherry cabinets this is frequently, and glaringly not done, then the differences are badly disguised with stain). Plywood will typically be more uniform and free from sapwood. The style of door is the primary consideration. Frame and panel doors with raised panel have to be made from solid wood, Slab doors can be done either way. Frame and panel doors, if properly made from well seasoned wood almost never warp. Slab doors will be more prone to change shape with changes in humidity. Some pieces of plywood move more than solid in my experience, other less, and sadly I don't know how to predict which is which in advance. Veneer comes in a myriad of forms, either rotary cut or sliced, The sliced veneer can be laid up in random, repeating, or bookmatched patterns to achieve the look you want. A specialty plywood supplier will have all of these options available for a common veneer like cherry. A cabinet maker can also make shop-made veneer to exactly match solid wood parts, assuming he has the sequential boards cut from the same log to permit precise matching. There's no end to how crazy you can get if you're really fussy about color and grain in cherry!...See MoreI need floor ideas for a kitchen with cherry stained maple cabinets
Comments (3)Hello, Have you considered using porcelain wood look tiles? Porcelain tile is a type of ceramic tile that is characterized by being stronger, harder, and even more water-resistant than ordinary ceramics. Will be great in the kitchen since they are lower maintenance and more water resistance than LVP. These wood looking tiles comes in many different colours now, so it shouldn't be a problem to find something that will match you existing real wood flooring in the other two rooms! Hope this help!...See MoreDesign ideas for Brazilian Cherry hardwood floors and kitchen cabinets
Comments (3)This is a good job for refacing, which I usually never recommend. You'll save thousands keeping the countertop in place. For Brazilian cherry, ask a floor refinisher. I'm not sure if that wood takes stain well or not? That's what you need to find out. Just an FYI, if you hire a fabricator to remove and reinstall? It could cost $2000 for demo trip for removal, temporary storage and another $2,000 for reinstalling...and they might have you sign a damage disclaimer. they crack it? Not their problem. Consider getting new tops all at once...and ask your fabricator to cut down the old kitchen tops and reinstall in all your bathrooms, office, or make a table....etc. I just googled and Sherwin Williams site stated this: Enjoy the benefits of Brazilian cherry while toning down the reds by staining with a dark water-based stain. Stain colors like black, onyx and ebony will override the wine-red tones and leave floors with a deep, dark finish. Stain floors with an oil-based dark stain to allow the red hues to shine through the dark tones....See MoreRelated Professionals
