I'm sorry but when I stare at the picture and think hard on how old the wood is I become dizzy and pass out. I've never experienced that when estimating age of people and cars.

We have an old house and I constantly remind myself that some of the answers are never going to reveal themselves. If only the original builder had left written records! If only the changes made over the years had been noted! I console myself with our efforts to honor the builder and the other owners over the years. In the 1836 addition, the subfloor is the only flooring! Those rooms are colder because the cellar is visible through the cracks, but unless we install new flooring over the original, we live with it, in the interest of historical accuracy. It is convenient in case someone has forgotten to turn off the cellar light, I can see light through some of the cracks! In two of the oldest rooms in our two hundred year old home, the owners during the 1920s installed 2” oak on top of the subfloor. In spite of the shudder I experience every time I walk into these main rooms, I leave the oak as it is now nearly one hundred years old. I just grit my teeth…. Probably, if this had been done recently, I would have ripped it out and replaced it with more appropriate flooring…. We did rip out the master bath with the 1990s tile and ridiculous vanity and the powder room sports new tile floor and toilet. If it is any consolation, when the second family bought the house 123 years after it was built, they lamented they could not afford to replace the original cedar shingles and had to settle for a metal roof. 90 years later, we had the roof repainted….

I agree it was probably the subfloor which served as the actual floor until more pine was installed over it- probably around 100 years ago. I just wish I knew more about the age to confirm what we believe which is that the house was built around the 1850s. Thank you for your feedback!! I appreciate y’all taking the time.

I grit my teeth all the time when I see some of the changes previous owners have made to this house but I have to remind myself they thought they were improving it and making it more functional.

Maybe longleaf yellow pine, if you're in the south. The distinction people try to make between subfloor and finished flooring in an old house is meaningless. Many floors were installed in one layer over the framing without a subfloor. My 1840s house has a thin subfloor, while my 1820s house had none. The houses here often had no t&g in either the subfloor or finished floor when a subfloor was used.

Yes, I am in Central Texas and we were thinking longleaf yellow pine too!

To be clear, when I call it the subfloor I just mean it’s possibly the original floor that was used which was covered later - now making it the subfloor

I have a friend who had an old (maybe late 1800s) house that was falling down in the Bertram TX area. Every wall and floor was covered in longleaf pine. Beautiful stuff.

I’m outside of Austin (Bastrop) and longleaf yellow pine seems to be in all the oldest homes here. I agree, absolutely beautiful!

Yellow pine. The floor appears to be 1800s but you can confirm by looking at the nails. You might need to pull one out if its not obvious from the nail head, sometimes the heads can look round on square nails. If they are square I'd go with the mid-1800s date.
