City Is Giving Free Pet Adoptions

The radio reports that the Los Angeles animal shelters are full, so for a few days all pet adoptions will be free. This is to relieve the crowding and avoid otherwise euthanizing the animals.

i remember going with a friend to our shelter to adopt. I couldn't believe all the beautiful, well behaved dogs, clearly pure bred in so many cages. I commented to the worker, and she said it happens every Christmas. People bring in their family pet and abandon it so that a new puppy can be a gift at Christmas. So if you are considering adopting a pet, right now is the ideal time to find a once loved pet that needs a loving home.

abandon a pet so they can get a puppy! That is the most backward and cruel thing I've ever heard.

Do they vet for those looking for fighting dogs or puppy mill mommas?

It may have to be their assessment of adoptability. The one-eyed dog I mentioned above -- when I finally found the owner, they ended up dumping him at the pound because his eye was grossing them out. I was talking with the pound and they told me no one would want him and they wanted to just euthanize him. Well, he went to live on a beautiful horse farm with lots of buds. Living my dream!! I was just over on the link. It looks like actually sponsoring a dog means you'll pick up whatever expenses are associated with readying him for adoption -- the spaying, shots, etc. That makes him easy for take out. Either to a real home or to a foster or rescue group. Those groups spend a fortune saving animals, they need all the help they can get. They rely on donations to keep going. Taking in another animal is a financial consideration as well. I wouldn't worry about that part. The money is needed to move the dog along in the direction of a forever home. I would think that the more money they've invested in an animal, the less likely he would be put down, over one that still needs expensive work done. It actually looks like Bruce isn't at the front of the line. There are dogs there in the 600s, longer than him. So if they think he's adoptable, he may have more time than some of the others. So many sweet looking dogs there. So many irresponsible owners : ( (Sorry I'm too beat to proof : )

Thank you both for your replies! I never even thought of vet records or chips, etc., thank you golddust!!! I think the people had to sell their house and get an apartment so they don't have a choice as no pets allowed. But everything happens for a reason I guess so at least in this case, it's a happy ending. I think they are just so happy they don't have to put him in a shelter and they "got to pick" who takes him home. That will at least help them with the sad part of giving him up. I will have her ask for a receipt, as silly as it sounds! (I was thinking a "bill of sale" when I was posting!). I was thinking of the "stolen" factor too, even though I don't think they'd do that. I agree, you just never know. I am so excited, I can't wait to meet her!! *p.s. It's nice to see you, auntjen! you were missed!!

What a handsome kitty Dustin is! I applaud you for giving this sweet guy a second chance at a caring forever home. I know he won't disappoint you and you will have a loyal companion for life. Definitely get him neutered and vet checked. You also want to become established with a vet because things do arise with pets that need veterinary attention. You have received some great advice from the above posters, but I would like to mention a thing or two about his diet. Don't be afraid of feeding him canned food. Canned food is SO much better for cats than dry. I am giving you a link to a wonderful website that can explain it all better than I could here, but feeding a canned diet will help prevent many illnesses and diseases that occur from a cat eating dry food. It took my one of cats becoming diabetic to get me educated in feline nutrition and in the past year I have learned so much and now all my cats are so much healthier because of it. Also another fun website you might like to consider joining is Catster. You can make Dustin his own web page and join in the various discussions in the forums. It's a fun group of people that share the common bond of being true feline lovers. I hope you and Dustin enjoy many happy, healthy years together. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can. Janet Here is a link that might be useful: Feeding Your Cat

Adopting an older pet

We have four dogs, three adopted from rescue, one purchased from my nieces as a puppy (then away from me with my ex-husband for 5 years and now back to me after he passed away). The three rescue girls were 1, 3 1/2, and 9 1/2 years old at adoption. The 1 and 3 1/2 year old were adopted at the same time, the 9 1/2 year old later on. Ginger Sue, our oldest, is now 14 1/2. She went to rescue when her elderly owner had to go into a senior home. She is blind in one eye (happened after we owned her - the vet believed she must have poked a stick in her eye while we were walking her and yes, it did cost us many vet bills, but could have happened at any age). She is also deaf. And, she pees on the floor if we don't listen and take her out when she needs to go (she only gives us one chance), or if she's feeling a little off color. But she loves us (all the girls do) with her whole heart. And she understands a hand signal when we want her to 'come'. And we love her. Tessa Marie, our now 9 year old is slowing down. I believe she was abused somewhere along the way, before we owned her. She has problems, both mental and physical. But she is also so loving and so happy to be with us. She loves me and absolutely ADORES Gary. And we love her back. Lexie Lee and Sophie Louise, both in the 6 - 7 1/2 year range, are both way young in body and spirit. They are best buddies and so glad to have each other to play with. At the same time, they are very competitive with each other for our attention. They are so much fun to have around. And we love them. Once our girls are no longer with us, we will probably not own multiple dogs again. I think one will be enough, because we are getting to an age where we want to travel a little (ok, a LOT) more and it's difficult with 4 girls. But I wouldn't trade any of our puppy girls for anything. Regardless of their ages! Doesn't matter how old they are or how old they were when you got them. Puppies are all about love.

Most shelters I know of have neutering before adoption as a requirement, it's not optional.

That is so sad! My dog is going on 11 years old and she is one of the most precious things in my life! She is absolutely adorable. I love her to pieces! I cannot imagine getting rid of her for a puppy. So sad! :*(

Yes, many many of the shelters periodically offer free adoptions.

The numbers of animals in the shelters is astounding. I think I've read that Philly is only accepting as emergency only because there is no room. There is a really nice shelter near me, which is a no kill shelter and their current promotion is "any dog over a year old and over 40 lbs is free to adopt". They do this at various times through the year. They do bring a lot of dogs from other areas as well as from the Philly shelter. They have had some dogs there for over a year ( harder to place, not good with dogs or kids, often owner surrenders). From time to time one of the long termers does get adopted which is totally heartwarming.

I agree that for anyone considering a dog, definitely look at shelters or rescues. Some are fostered in homes. Either way you are saving a life and making room for another save.

i am outside of Philly and our PSCPA has 'clear the shelters' a couple of times a year. the number of dogs is astounding. i naively thought that with a the Spay/Neuter programs, no kill shelters, rescue groups, shelters only adopting out spayed/neutered dogs, 'pet shops' closing as people are more aware of puppy mills, that the overpopulation would decrease. but i guess not.

such a sad and unnecessary situation. just the irresponsibility of dog owners!

I too saw this and wonder what "free meant"? We adopted a discarded show dog. It was "free" he was in perfect condition but his mom came down with cataracts, and they are trying to irradiate them from the breed so our dog was sterilized which made him no longer eligible to show. We did have to pay for the sterilization $200 back then.
