wow there is a lot going on here!

1. consider painting the space with a warmer undertone, seems tho you like bold warm colors but your applying them to a room with a very cool feel.

2. that poor fireplace! Yes move the tv. put it on that dresser for now.

3, role up the rugs the pink and orange do not go together, you can probably use one but not both in this space. need to get the furniture placement right first then worry about rugs.

4. we need to see what you like, so post some pictures of basements that you like, style color etc. this is a blank canvas, so rolling those rugs will help you to see the spaces as well.

5. how will you use the space? you could put a desk area, a card table, a pool table. it doesnt have to be 2 seating areas.

here are some examples, and also warmer tones.

I'd paint the wall to the right of the sofa a dark gray/blue and put the large sofa against that wall.

with the rug centered on the fireplace, create a seating area with the chairs, one on either side of that column.

for the other area... do you have a game table or card table for puzzles, card playing?

I think your wall color works with your floor, the rugs are just fighting with the floors and furnishings. Get some graph paper, measure your room, mark entries and posts, fireplace, etc. and start playing with a layout. Your can cut out furniture shapes and move them around until you get a layout that works. In the future, do that before buying furniture. Adding art to the walls will change the feel considerably. Pretty landscapes with greens will bring life to the area. I don’t see how the sofa is too big, but it’s difficult to tell from photos. Agree that moving the chairs to the fireplace side makes more sense. You can set up a conversation area with the furniture around the fireplace and maybe have game room setup where the chairs are now. If you post your detailed floor plan with measurements you will get more help here.

Hi everyone. Thanks so much. I’m so stuck with this basement. Already returned the pink rug and about to shop back the orange. I love pretty much every style except the look down here. I hate grey and that modern/ cool vibe. The dresser is also a flea market find and is going upstairs soon. But that area is a waste of space unless we do a bully on kitchenette. I’ll post screenshots of things I love but again I’m so all over the place anything with lots of pattern color and texture is my vibe. I think my issue may be the floor tone bc everything I’m drawn too is the opposite in a clashing way, not complimentary. Any more advice is so greatly appreciated. I moved the sofa to the orange side also bc the fireplace does suit chairs an da table better i believe. Thanks again!!

is it tile or vinyl? I think if you went with a warmer wall color it might just maybe pull some beige from that flooring? I think you could work into a warm pallet maybe using a blue.

also what if you mounted the tv on that little raised area left of the fireplace and put it on a pull out swivel?

Don’t lose heart :). I think you can have a fabulous maximalist blue and orange rec room. Don’t let the gray floor be the boss, just cover as much of it as you can. The orange rug seems like it will work just fine. Can you get a second matching orange rug in a smaller size for in front of the fireplace? Then maybe a sisal or a neutral tan rug for in front of the sliding door, as large as possible. One or two brass floor lamps. A gold framed ornate mirror, perhaps on the wall where dresser currently is. A big fig tree in a corner (faux if you don’t have a green thumb). Big bold colorful art canvases, one above fireplace, three on wall to right of fireplace. Check out greatbigcanvas.com. Bold drapes in orange velvet blackout, orange ikat, or a stripe with orange and blue. Cognac leather poufs or cognac leather accent chairs instead of the light blue chairs. Big white sheepskin quad rug. Perhaps bring in some golden yellow accents as well. Agree to use couch and chairs in the same seating group so they are not all in one row along the length of the room, probably on the side of the room where the 11 x 11 rug is currently, moving TV to that side. Try a round game table and 4 chairs on the other side in front of fireplace for now - no need to spend a lot of money, just buy an inexpensive set from Craigslist or Marketplace for now and see how you use the space over the next year. Then you can upgrade if you like that concept . . .

It might be useful to look at doing something like you see in our below designs. We might recommend looking at doing a blue, white, grey, beige, with a little yellow but we might recommend getting different rugs.

I know it is late in the game here but I might try keeping the orange carpet in the same area but switching how it is laid out with the shorter side against the fireplace wall and maybe center it in the space. Then move the couch and coffee table to the side where your sliding doors are and put at least the front legs of the couch on the carpet. I don't know what other furniture you have access to but the drawers in the picture could be used at an angle for the tv stand inbetween window and the fireplace. The two chairs with the cowhide that you can move around to the fireplace and get a couple of ottomans that can be used in the two spaces with trays for drinks etc. Take colors from your carpet or different tones of the blue in your chairs for some pillows and ottomans. Perhaps you could paint that fireplace dark grey or if you like the white, regrout or paint the lines white so that the fireplace reads one color.
