Does anyone here grow brussel sprouts?
Comments (5)They are pretty easy to grow, other than the typical cabbage family problems, animals and insects. Be sure to treat regularly for cabbage worms, and watch out for aphids as the sprouts are forming in the fall, as they can get into the developing sprout and make a mess. In PA, I'd say you can put out transplants any time between early April and about the first of July and still have success. Yes, there are different varieties, including purple ones, but you probably are only going to encounter a few very basic types at your local garden center, such as 'Long Island', 'Jade Cross' and possibly 'Bubbles' (I saw those this year). If you happen to have a more enlightened garden center, you might find something else. Folks in the West Coast might find different, overwintering strains from Europe....See Moreearly purple sprouting broccoli

Comments (12)I just started doing this again a few weeks ago (after maybe a 30 year hiatus) I splurged on a 2-tray thing from Pinetree. It came w/10 bags of different sprouts, so used that rto justfy the $20. I tried some sprouts I've never done b4...the wheat one were the BEST. I mean, really excellent, crunchy and nutty. It's fun to let some grow out past the point where they are great to eat, & you get to see what seeds do underground...when the wheat ones had totally maxed out their energy they had beautiful big cotelydons (sp?) on one end and gorgeous roots on the other...and no seed left in the middle, just a tired out empty hull. It's so beautiful to watch these guys grow; and tasty too! Donna...See MoreSprouted Broccoli
Comments (10)Remember also that any Certified Organic broccoli seeds are safe to sprout. In order to be certified, they can't have any chemicals. Territorial Seed has larger sized packages. Sometimes health food stores have them in bulk. I know we have at least one that does. Radish, broccoli, clover, alfalfa and mung beans all in my cupboard. You can also sprout grains like wheat, oat groats, rye, buckwheat, barley, etc. As long as they're organic, sprout away!! Deanna...See Moreprairiemoon2 z6b MA
