broccoli and brussel sprouts in the cold
Comments (21)alamo5000, I wanted to respond earlier with a photo but kept forgetting to take it. We are in the same climate zone. Broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts do wonderful as a fall/winter vegetalbe in our neck of the woods. I usually set out about 150 to 160 plants each year. They tend to do fine as long as the temperatures stay mid 20's or above. They do get a bit stressed in the lower 20's. And, when the temperature stays below 20 for long periods, there will be plants losses. Anyway, here is a photo. Plants on the back row were planted early September. They are just beginning to show heads. Plants under the date were planted the mid to late October. These late plantings are past our recommended planting window....See MoreAnyone Growing Edible Sprouts this Winter?
Comments (12)I just started doing this again a few weeks ago (after maybe a 30 year hiatus) I splurged on a 2-tray thing from Pinetree. It came w/10 bags of different sprouts, so used that rto justfy the $20. I tried some sprouts I've never done b4...the wheat one were the BEST. I mean, really excellent, crunchy and nutty. It's fun to let some grow out past the point where they are great to eat, & you get to see what seeds do underground...when the wheat ones had totally maxed out their energy they had beautiful big cotelydons (sp?) on one end and gorgeous roots on the other...and no seed left in the middle, just a tired out empty hull. It's so beautiful to watch these guys grow; and tasty too! Donna...See Morewhat's chinese broccoli?????? Does anyone have seeds?????
Comments (13)"Chinese broccoli" is Gailan or Jielan, if you go to a chinese resturant, be sure to ask for it in chinese, otherwise, they just bring out regular American broccoli. I've been had too many times so now i always ask whether they've got the "right" broccoli or not. As for vegetable itself, it is in the same family as broccoli, with i think the same nutritional benefits. But it looks nothing like regular broccoli (except for color of leaves). It usually has thick, big green/blueish leaves, the center stem is about thumb thick. harvest when one or two flower buds are about to open on 8-10 in tall stem.Stem and leaves are boiled and eaten with oyster sauce or stir fried with only garlic and salt. it's much more heat tolerant than broccoli, can basically grow year round if you give it enough water. (But, i'm lucky to live So Cal where it never freezes or gets too hot!) i get seeds at my local chinese supermarket....See MorePurple Sprouting Broccoli
Comments (1)It is easy to grow. It is all side shoots not the big heads one associates with commercial heading broccoli. When I lived in southwest Virginia, I started in in late July for a fall harvest. Did ok, lots of 1-3 inch purple heads. Taste is about the same maybe not quite as tender as regular broccoli. Big plant tho, they got 3-4 ft high and covered about the same space laterally. The only pest that bothered it were cabbage worms or loopers and Bt takes care of them....See Moreprairiemoon2 z6b MA
