Does anyone here grow brussel sprouts?

Are they hard to grow and when should you plant them? Are there different varieties of them? Always wanted to try growing some!

Hi, I am trying Brussels sprouts for my first time this year. I purchased plants for my first try figuring try from seeds later. I did purchase plants from from two different places, I did get 2 or 3 different varieties, I do not recall at the moment what they are.......

So far does not seem to be growing much different than any other Brassica.

For our area they suggest planting April 10, and later between July 1 to July 15

They are pretty easy to grow, other than the typical cabbage family problems, animals and insects. Be sure to treat regularly for cabbage worms, and watch out for aphids as the sprouts are forming in the fall, as they can get into the developing sprout and make a mess. In PA, I'd say you can put out transplants any time between early April and about the first of July and still have success. Yes, there are different varieties, including purple ones, but you probably are only going to encounter a few very basic types at your local garden center, such as 'Long Island', 'Jade Cross' and possibly 'Bubbles' (I saw those this year). If you happen to have a more enlightened garden center, you might find something else. Folks in the West Coast might find different, overwintering strains from Europe.

Hey vera_eastern_wa - Mine are Long Island Improved, too! It's been unseasonably cool here, but days are now starting to reach into the 80s - low 90s. And it's humid, as always. I did notice that about planting in late June - July... but it'll be even hotter then, so dunno if that'll be bad! skagit_goat_man - When I prepared the soil, I mixed in some Miracle Gro Organic Choice Garden Soil (.10 - .05 - .10), along with composted manure and some leaf compost, which admittedly was still very leafy and not-very-composted. Since then, I've side-dressed some of the other areas of my 4'X 6' plot with Garden Tone (3-4-4), but I haven't touched the sprouts yet, 'cause I wasn't sure what to use. One Web site suggested 10-20-0 fertilizer for Brussels, and wasn't sure where to get that!

Never heard that one macky. I think they all prefer pretty fertile soil. I think it's all about a timing thing. I've had differently timed successions of broccoli and cauli in the same plot turn out different sized heads. I can plant them from Aug-Feb, but I notice the closer I get to the winter solstice to planting, the smaller the head. Which makes sense because the amount of sunlight. I also notice that my winter harvests(when planted in late/summer/early fall) are a bit better than my early summer summer harvests. With my Brussels, I get big plants and I get sprouts. They're just always loose leaf sprouts. I read last year that July is supposed to be optimum for them here, so I'll give it one more shot I don't know how that's supposed to work out though -- our summers don't really get going until late july. PICKLED CAULIFLOWER OR BRUSSELS SPROUTS Ingredients: 12 cups of 1- to 2-inch cauliflower flowerets or small Brussels sprouts 4 cups white vinegar (5-percent acidity) 2 cups sugar 2 cups thinly sliced onions 1 cup diced sweet red peppers 2 tablespoon mustard seed 1 tablespoon celery seed 1 teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes Yield: About 9 half-pints Procedure: Wash cauliflower flowerets or Brussels sprouts. (Remove stems and blemished outer leaves.) Boil in salt water (4 teaspoons canning salt per gallon of water) for 3 minutes for cauliflower and 4 minutes for Brussels sprouts. Drain and cool. Combine vinegar, sugar, onion, diced red pepper and spices in large saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer 5 minutes. Distribute onion and diced pepper among jars. Fill jars with pieces and pickling solution, leaving Â½-inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Wipe jar rims. Adjust lids and process half-pints or pints for 10 minutes in a boiling water bath. Agree that it is Brussel sprouts not collards. But normally they are a fall/winter crop in your part of the country as they can't tolerate heat. Even here they are a fall crop. Far northern parts of the US only can plant in spring but for the rest of us they need cool weather and even light frosts to thrive and unfortunately plant sellers ignore that fact. Yours is either getting far, far too little sun exposure or it is already too warm for it or likely both and that is why it is so weak and spindly. And as spindly as it is the odds of it producing any sprouts are slim. The stem would normally be 5x as thick as that one in the pic so the circulatory system of the plant is already heavily compromised. Personally I'd pitch it and use the space for something more productive. Dave

Best harvested after a couple of good frosts so here that means planting them in mid-July. I start my transplants from seed and grow Catskill and Long Island Improved. The common varieties are listed in the previous post.

Average DTM is 90-100 days so count back from your first frost date to know approx. when to plant.

I grow them in the winter in my greenhouse. I also have a screened shelter I use for my seedlings in the spring that I fill with Brussels sprouts I started earlier in the greenhouse, when the pepper and tomato seedlings are planted outside.

I refuse to battle the cabbage looper over them in the great outdoors.
