Bill Vincent ? -tile cut around drain
Comments (6)Bill, Thanks for the speedy reply and the pictures. The tile is 4 X 4 on the diagonal, just like the 1st picture. I didn't mention it but it is already grouted. Does that change the solution? Can he remove the cut tile without damaging too many more tiles? I want to make sure I know exactly what he needs to do so he can't tell me that it's not possible. Thanks for your help. ~Trish...See MoreLarge format shower floor tile WITHOUT linear drain?
Comments (7)To do what he's proposing, you cannot have a "bowl" mud slope. Take a rectangle and draw two lines from corner to corner. The resultant triangles will have to be completely flat planes that slope towards the center point where the two lines intersect (your drain). Your shower floor will have that X in it in grout from the cut tiles. This is MUCH MUCH harder to do than a bowl preslope, as it has to be sloped correctly and perfectly flat, and the intersecting X lines can be difficult to achieve uniformly for a novice. It CAN look great when done by a pro, but it can also be a slippery uneven nightmare if done by a hack who can't get it level and with tile that isn't rough enough to give your feet grip on a wet surface....See MoreTiled shower: DIY versus hire my tile guy: rubber membrane +
Comments (9)The only thing I saw that wasn't kosher was the part about going up the wall behind the cement board 4". By code, it MUSt go up a minimum of 8" PAST the top of the curb, meaning 10- 12" up the wall, instead of 4". Also, I know I'm not cheap by ANY means, and My shower pans, materials included run 30.00 per square foot. IOW, for me to come and install your shower pan would cost you 360.00. You can take it from there. Keep in mind, though, different areas will charge differently....See MoreAny reason not to use this tile on my shower floor?
Comments (7)Threeapples, Before the tiler installed our Carrera marble hex mosaic shower floor, I printed off your entire saga of that original thread for him to read. I was so worried that it might happen to us, too. It was over 20 pages, I think! Anyway, he said he has done hundreds of light marble shower floors and it would be fine. It IS fine. No darkening like you and others have had. There IS a way to do this 100% correctly so that there won't be any water under there. One thing--he didn't seal-maybe that helps? I wouldn't want you to use a dark porcelain if what you want is the white marble. Mightn't it be wet under the porcelain, too, but you would see it? I don't know--this whole business is so confusing, as you well know by now. What I'm TRYING to say is, find someone who has done many successful showers like what you want. Look on Houzz for your area then ask the builder/designer who did the tile then call them up. ??? Ask your local tile shops who sell this material to recommend the BEST installer they know of. You CAN get it done correctly. Good luck to you!...See MoreMint tile Minneapolis
