Best way to lay out this living room?
We have a partially furnished living room in need of a final design so we can decide what to purchase next:
Apart from the pictured items, this layout will eventually include:
- A media console to replace the table with the christmas tree. We need to decide where to put it, which will determine the type and size that we get. There will not be a TV in this room.
- A side table, either 12 or 16 inches to go with one or both chairs.
- Possibly a shelf, for more use of the vertical space, but not if it gets in the way of the other furniture.
- A coffee table (probably glass) to replace the ottoman.
Our main concern here is how to arrange the couch/chairs/eventual console, so we can decide what console to get. We are willing to replace the couch if necessary but would prefer not to.
The ceiling for this room is 8ft; other dimensions are below. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Chairs as is, but add large art and a side table.
Could try couch on far wall, media cabinet on left and chairs by window or facing couch.
Layout and style decisions first, before buying anything and instead of a glass coffee suggest wood.

Comments (1)Creating 'flow' is all about coordination. That includes soft coverings (window coverings, pillows, floor coverings, etc). Your drapes are the beginning (and in this setting, the end) of the coordination effort. The two sofas in two different styles and two different colours create a hodge-podge sitting area. I would start with figuring out the style you wish to portray. Once you have that fixed, then figure out a colour scheme. After that, you will want to move ahead with the soft coverings. An area rug that compliments the drapes (you will want to get all three sets of drapes coordinated) will go a very long way. But first the big stuff: style. Either the orange modern sofa stays or it goes. Everything else appears to be traditional. The large brown sofa - being over stuffed - is in opposition to the orange sofa. Comments (8)Sarah, That layout was just a starting point for your room. There is lots of room to entertain different concepts for your room. Here's another possible layout for you to consider. This one has two sofas with 'cuddle' sections at each end facing the TV. I added an upright piano to the plan. Is this something you own or are you considering a baby grand for the room? Not sure this is the right room for a standard wall bookcase to store books. I'm sure you have an office in this house that might be scaled better to receive a standard 84" tall bookcase. Instead, you might want to consider sectionals that have matching bookcases that border the sectional like this example below. The bookcases act as book storage, display space, and console tables all at the same time. That long wall for the TV is 14ft. This photo below illustrates a cleaver use of a long wall that incorporates a TV and some display shelving if that is what you meant by bookcases for the room. Here are a variety of long walls with large TVs mounted on the walls and ways to address all the wall space that comes with this. I'd suggest you start with a rug that at a minimum is 10x14. It can be larger, as you have the room. Rugs this size can be pricey and limited in designs. Also, it's like hauling 2 dead bodies to move them so you'll not want to do that more than once. The plan also shows a long credenza or sideboard with art mounted above on the wall behind the two sectionals. This might be a great spot for placing a food spread if you entertain. Just keep in mind how large the room is and small items will get lost in this room. Also for you ceiling, don't even consider a 54 or 60" size. Comments (0)The living room is 24ft long by 13 ft wide. On each short side, there's a window in the middle of the wall. One long wall has 1 entry on each end and part of it is just the railing for the staircase as opposed to drywall. The other long wall has a fireplace smack dab in the middle of it with a tall mantle. 3 ft away on one side of the fireplace is a window and on the other, a door. Where do we put a TV? You want definition.
Below? Swing the chair near the couch at entry door. to where I have the plant. You are trying to make the shorted wall a defining end to the space. Don't do that.
Then you mix materials. If the cabinet is wood? A glass or stone topped table is nice. Or the cocktail table is glass, and the console under that mirror I a smaller stone topped, and it's open. Everyone can reach a table, and nothing is too small or cluttered.
Pick a rug, tone in and contrast some pillows....Look for some art you love. The big mirror over that open console? It will reflect both art on the adjacent wall, and the outdoors.
Lamps are jewelry and light. A generous rug GROUNDS EVERYTHING ATOP IT. Look again and simply swing chair to plant locale..bearing in mind, the rug.
Tiny tables? Not needed. think bigger and less, and CENTER that couch on the window: )

last yearWhat do you need a media cabinet for? Is this a rental? I think u are trying to use the fan as a center point. Use the window. I like Jan's idea but I might have the sofa face out to the window.

Truthfully, we don't USE rooms that have no Tv. Make it look like art, and its there when you want it. Or not. Out of the glare of the window. TV.....................: ) below...also ART.

It's based on alllll you need to buy is
RUG, MEDIA CONSOLE( closed ) Smaller open console, cocktail table, art or tv, and a great mirror. You don't have to do it today, or all at once. Are you asking me if it works ? Yes it does . Your sofa ( the one you hoped NOT to replace ) and chairs remain in the room. As is. A rug will take the light and leggy look out of the chairs. At some point ? A bit more upholstered pair of chairs would be very nice. : )
This is a way to spend less............get a nice impact as soon as possible.
Messy below and hasty.
You have to BEGIN somewhere. Frankly? I'd start with rug you love, in 9 x 12/ It will help you realize the REAL size of the space. Start adding something besides GRAY.
