A Book Shop Tour of Bath

Just came across this youtube video via the monthly newsletter I subscribe to from Persephone Books.

They are a publishing company that re-print 'worth-reading' books mostly from the early to mid twentieth century. They have recently moved from Bloomsbury, London to Bath.

I have to admit I have never heard of Miranda Mills who does the 'tour' but I thought you might enjoy a look at the lovely Georgian/Regency town with its wonderful selection of independent bookshops.

Thank you for posting this, Vee. It was almost as good as a trip. Our local bookstores, unfortunately, don't hold a candle to yours. I adored Murder One in London which is now, alas, only an on-line shop.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Carolyn. The house Mills and her mother stayed in is owned by the Landmark Trust. They buy up up older 'interesting' properties, do them up with period furniture and fittings (although the cooking unit shown there does rather jar) which they rent out to visitors; similar to Airbnb's but more upmarket and quite pricey.

For anyone interested in Jane Austen Bath is THE place to visit.

I have to be kept away from book shops or I would spend too much money!

I saw the photos of this masterpiece the first time around but was thrilled to sit through a more extensive tour - even if I had to remove my boots. Ha! newdawn, when we bought our house, the heating/lights/water bill here was more than our old house's mortgage! igloochick, you will have to put in intercoms for DS and any future ice cubes... My kids were young when we moved into our house and they would loose me. My house isn't nearly as big as your will be. We painted our house for $17,000. You have one lifetime project ahead of you.

The Kitchen Revival Tour is this Saturday, April 16. As I understand it, you go to the Architectural Heritage Society's office to pick up tickets, map, and tour materials. I believe they open around 10 am or a bit before. It is a self-guided, self-paced tour of whichever of the houses you choose to visit, so the local and visiting KF'ers will run into each other randomly if at all. But I thought it might be fun to list some secret recognition codes that we and only we will know to look for. Here's mine: I will be the guy wearing chrome-plated Ray-Bans - propped up on his head, if not over his eyes. Anyone else want to post a top-secret, spy-behind-enemy-lines, recognition code? Your dashing yellow silk cravate, the boa feather in your chapeau, green lizardskin handbag held by the second and fourth fingers of the left hand? Just keep it a secret, lest we be betrayed to the stasi.

Thanks for posting this. I love FLW and his Usonian houses! By any chance did this one have the dropped rangetop in the kitchen, completely lined in stainless? I was so impressed with that, I really wished I could duplicate that in our home. Even my DH, who isn't as much a FLW fan as I am, thought that was a terrific idea. Such an interesting precursor to Mid-Century Modern. I think my whole (amateur) interest in architecture and interior design comes from a tour of the Robie House when I was a kid. I looked up at the indirect cove lighting using early fluorescent tube lights and thought, "Wow, that is AMAZING!" What a difference from the "one single fixture in the middle of the ceiling" that all our apartments had, back in the '50's and '60's. The Robie House is a multi-level urban home. There are no window coverings, because none are needed. The window glass is slightly angled, and there are built-in brick "awnings" integrated into the design. Nobody can see in, even at night! I really love how he used woodgrain as part of the overall design. A brilliant, brilliant man. If you ever visit Chicago, there are several FLW tours, including the Oak Park area where many of his designs remain.

We had one day in Bath on the retirement gift to myself of a 28-day tour of Great Britain. Saw the Roman baths, of course, and the Abbey and rode around the Royal Crescent and the Circus. Bud and I had lunch at Sally Lunn's, and that was about it. Didn't get a glimpse of Jane Austen.

Me, too, about staying away from bookshops. I'm quite fond of the Book Depository from which I can order books not yet available in the U.S. with no shipping charges, although I don't buy many in these days of electronic downloads from the public library.

I tried to get the download but then saw it was for an hour and my old laptop buffers too much after a couple of minutes!

I have fond memories of visiting Bath in the 1950s when I stayed at a B&B in the Royal Crescent. It was quite reasonable back then but probably costs a fortune now!
