Beach wave perm, have you had one?

I didn't know they existed until today and now I'm kind of thinking about having it done.

A couple of months ago in a hair topic I tried to describe my hair, how it's flat on top and has curls at the bottom. No one seemed to get it because I probably didn't describe my hair very well.

I found this photo of me, no idea where I was at, but it's exactly how my hair is now, except shorter, just below the shoulders. Straight then waves. I just wish they started higher on my head! :)

I bet a lot of you have the same waves.

My hair looked like that when it was longer. I thought it was the weight of your hair pulling the waves out at the top. If you look at pics of curly hair people , the top is usually straighter or a different curl pattern.

Mick; It seems as though it could have been handled better. Mothers do not like when people just come up and take a child out of their arms any more than you would like it if someone came up and took away something you were holding - let alone a baby. I think if you had respected the fact that she was holding her daughter and you could have asked, "Dear, would you like me to hold her for you so you can finish your dessert? I would love to hold her." Something like that instead of posing a question to a baby who obviously cannot answer. It almost seems Passive Agressive (even though I'm sure you didn't mean it as such) but to ask a baby that and then take her would come across like you just dismissed the fact that she was holding her daughter. I would apologize and tell her that you realize you overstepped a boundary and it won't happen again. That you love her and think she is a fantastic mother. In my opinion it has nothing to do with your daughter-in-law being over protective. It has more to do with wanting her role as the mother to be respected. Good luck!

I've seen a couple people on the forum talk highly of it sometimes with conditions though. I imagine much depends on what you expect out of it. I don't have one of those, but I have one of the old ones that is like a big glass dutch oven with the fan/heater on top. I got that at the time the American Harvest unit was quite popular and it was about $20 IIRC. I will say I really like this unit. It's useful for so many things. It IS a nice little convection oven for most things. I cook bacon in it sometimes, cook burgers, it's perfect for frozen potatoes, most any frozen item. The fan is very useful. However if I make pizza burgers and put the shredded cheese on top, it'll blow it off! I use it to brown ribs or roasts before putting them into the Nesco. I used it yesterday to toast the buns for some sloppy joes. I've used it to make scalloped potatoes, but you have to cover it because of the fan, and I've made things like tater tot hotdish in it. It's perfect for baking potatoes. Crisp skins and cooks faster than the other oven. Much smaller unit than heating one of the bigger ovens. I have a small oven and a large one on my stove so I mostly use the small one, but this serves the need quite well. After using this one, I would not get the one where the unit goes over everything. There's one that Mr. T advertises that is similar to mine, where it's a big bowl with the heater in the lid and you can get extension rings for them too but I wouldn't make something that big. Like I said, it probably depends on what you expect out of it. I'm wary of the As Seen on TV things too, however there are several that are great. I like my little grabber for one thing. Dryer balls are fine. And that chamois mop works well for me too. Can't think of other things that I have that were advertised there and I never buy it from the ad. The shipping is crazy. Someone around here has the Advantium oven that uses the halogen light and raves about it. I am skeptical about them but thought if the price was right it would be an introduction to one. I'm not sure if you have a choice of which heating to use or if they're all on at once. Never looked into it that far.

I haven't had any kind of perm for eons, but this thread brought back memories. Each August my Mom used to cut us girls hair down to about 4 or 5 inches long, then give us each a perm, using mostly the small to medium rollers. Yep, you guessed it, we started school with afros, and that was before they were the fad thing to do!! After about 6 wks or so, it looked okay. I remember the first year I insisted on getting my school perm in longer hair. You'd have thought I'd said the minister was the devil. She finally did it, but kept mumbling about 'not getting my money's worth out of the perm'. I hope yours turns out great. Shirley

None of these scare stories have happened to me. I’ve had mine for almost 2 years. I leave it set on medium hot. If you need to adjust the temp, you can always at least clean your hands first, then move the lever to change temp. I pretty much only need to change it if I want cold water for coffee pot, etc, in which case my hands aren’t dirty! Ours has never turned itself on. I can’t understand why so many people who have never tried one are so negative. If you cook, you get dirty hands and it’s a great feature. It is very simple to use manually if you prefer. It turns itself off automatically after a few minutes, so no risk of it overflowing or something.

It's physics. The curl is in the ends of the hair that is not weighted down (the hair closer to the roots is weighted down by the length of the hair). Since there are no ends except at the bottom, that's where the curls show up. If you layered your hair so there were ends all along the length, from the scalp to the bottom, you'd have curl all the way up.

The first time I went to my current hairstylist she commented on the waves as if she was surprised. My hair was the same length as now, barely below my shoulders. I've never seen one curl come from the top. When I had my Twiggy haircut in Jr. High, it was straight as could be.

New hair growth is straight also. The plus to the waves is no matter how clumsy I am when using a curling iron, you can't tell it. lol I just wish I could do my own beach wave.

I may be in luck. A friend who lives close by and is much younger than I am, is a stylist and she may do it for me at her house.

⬆️⬆️⬆️Yes, top straight even when cut short, but bottom waves when longer and curls when cut shorter. When younger had top "spot permed." Now just cut layered w/ top shorter.

"When I had my Twiggy haircut in Jr. High, it was straight as could be." Except for curly hair that is kinky, hair grows out straight until there is enough of it to form a curl. Depending on how curly will determine how long before a curl forms.

Remember, the hair that is long and wavy at the ends is the exact same hair that comes out straight at the scalp. The weight of the long hair straightens the shaft until you get closer to the ends where there isn't so much weight. If you took one of those long strands of hair and whacked it off (as in layering) it would curl, too.

Beach waves are "the thing" with the younger crowd here at the beach. Many get hair extentions. Here are two examples from the salon I go to.

I cannot find a photo of my sister. She has shorter hair and had wave curls (not perm) several months ago. Our stylist told her to buy this to do at home.

I like wavy hair...you can get the look by loosely braiding your hair...get it wet...blow dry...take the braids out. We experimented a lot in high school.....perms make my hair frizzier than it already is.

• straight need wash often excess oil. Curly oil does not reach causes scalp issues, dry hair, dandruff.

My hair is pretty wavy. I have thick hair so I keep it layered/texturized. Makes the most of my waves. The braiding trick does work. I have friends with daughters who braid their hair and sleep that way - next morning - waves!

I would be very careful about perming color-treated hair.

I don’t love most beach waves because the ends of each curl are just left hanging. The style doesn’t seem to complement any face shape either, and they’re not at all natural looking—just two curtains hanging down both sides of the face. Maybe I’ve only seen bad beach waves?

Tina, when I was a sophomore in high school we had a hippie dress-up day. Early 70's. My hair was down to the middle of my back and I braided it before I went to be. Guess which female won for the Soph's?

"Curly underneath." Do they mean underneath the hair or down at the bottom?

This is a recent picture of my 12 yo DGD and it looks like her hair was straightened by a curling iron.

She truly is my mini-me but she's more adorable than I was. And she's a fellow Virgo!
