Comments (17)Early Fall, 1963: I had found a place where designers sold the clothing after it was "shown", and Pierre Cardin's models fit me perfectly. I took a second full-time job just to save the money for 2 suits in silk shangtun. Short, straight, above-the-knee skirt with a split hem in back, fitted vest with fabric-covered buttons, and boxy jacket, each lined in silk sateen. Worn with hose (held up with those d*m garters) and matching shoes in suede, 3" heels. A small handbag with a shoulder strap (I think shoulderbags were a newish style at that time). This was basic office attire, also with the requisite hat - remember Jackie's pillbox hats?- and gloves. Arriving at the office without hat and gloves was considered 'inappropriately attired' and you were warned once and fired the second time. And, thinking of inappropriate attire, I can remember being lectured on those grounds [about July 1954], by a neighbor for wearing pedalpushers and a sleeveless blouse while delivering newspapers. During the preceding winter and spring, I had been wearing my older bro's jeans, jacket, and ballcap while biking the 5-mile route. I think the neighbor was horrified to discover his paperboy was a girl. He never tipped, either....See MoreI wish I was still a little girl ...
Comments (22)Haha! Yes, I should get a set for myself and just "keep it at my house" for when little ones come to visit. ;-D I keep going back and looking at it (first heard of Calico Critters on a morning news segment where they were featuring neat offerings from a local toy shop), and can so imagine spending hours playing with these when I was a child. I too had Liddle Kiddles, Flatsy Dolls (remember those?), and of course tons of Barbies and accessories. My niece, who is 9, might be a tad too old for the Calico Critters, although she does still play with her Littlest Pet Shop animals. I checked out the Lalaloopsy dolls and they too are very cute! The niece has asked for an American Girl doll for Christmas, and while they're adorable, they and their accessories are pretty high priced. I remember the commercials for Sylvanian Families! I was older by the time they came out, but remember that they were quite cute too. The Calico Critters have sort of a Richard Scarry look about them, and I always loved his books. Maybe that's why they especially appeal to me....See MorePlayroom help for 2 sweet little girls :) PICS
Comments (29)PP offered some great tips! Your girls are going to love the room. I had a couple suggestions I haven't seen mentioned yet. For wall art: I love etsy.com for handmade art or budget-friendly photos. I have some great prints for my 2 girls' rooms. They also have vinyl adhesive quotes or you can order your girls' names. They can be pricey, so I ended just hand painting a two-tone pink cherry blossom tree. Not as fancy as this, but decent enough considering it only cost me a few quarts of paint. This decal from easy is $86. For your windows: I agree with the PP worried about window safety. With those windows, I would invest in plantation shutters (too heavy for a 2 or 3 year old to unlock and swing open) or buy a metal window gate to ensure your kids can't open the window. Then you can buy some pretty sheers to soften the look of plantation shutters. I got some from Pottery Barn Kids that are embroidered with pink and green butterflies to cover my daughter's shutters. It offers a light whimsical look. They're both sleeping now so I can't take photos. I can't copy the image here, but I see one on eBay now with lavender butterflies for $35 per 84" panel. Post photos when you finish the playroom!...See MoreAnyone else feeling overwhelmed about......Christmas??
Comments (40)I really have cut down my Christmas card list. A box of 50 is more than enough. Last year I joined the Christmas card exchange here at KT and had a wonderful time receiving so many cards. I only give gifts to kids under ten, which means 4 things to buy. We usually get together with my husband's two sisters sometime in November or December. We go to a restaurant or get together at one house for a simple dinner. Last year it was pizza and hot hero sandwiches. I brought a plate of home-made cookies, which went over well. When I brought up the subject of no gift exchanging several years ago, everyone seemed relieved. My decorating is down to three things-a wreath on the door, a small table-top tree and a Nativity Set on a table. Do what you can, what you enjoy. Hand made gifts are wonderful! My husband has one brother whose wife always makes gifts for family. One year a scented candle, another a festively painted coffee can filled with candy....See Moregracefullyaged
