Lighten up kitchen ideas
Comments (17)My long-term plan would be to install a vent hood. Besides all the advantages of real venting, you could replace the upper cabinets with white or whatever color you chose. You only want to paint over a factory-finished cabinet as a last resort, and especially not the base cabs where water exposure and drips occur. You'd only need five new cabinets--three on the window wall, one to the left of the fridge, and an over-fridge cabinet. All cabs would go to the ceiling. The first cab would be a few inches narrower to give the window some breathing room--I really dislike windows crowded by cabinets. The cab to the right of the window would also be slightly smaller, subtracting inches for the window and a properly sized vent hood. That cab might now be a single door, which opens toward the stove instead of a right-hinged door opening in your face (single door, less $). Eliminate the useless over the mw cab and use a chimney hood (savings of several hundred $ that goes to the new hood). You would install a full depth cab over the fridge, making the fridge look built-in and updating your kitchen. The thing that jumps out to me as dreary are the sconces. Change the one over the table ASAP....See MoreNeed help lightening up a dark kitchen
Comments (4)My wife and I had a similar issue (almost exact!) but we also have the opportunity to replace the cheapo countertops we have. We selected BM Revere Pewter for the walls and will have carrara marble look-alike quartz. With the tan in the countertop, I'd instead recommend either a very light blue or green. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/0c/a8/d0/0ca8d0fea7275a07eeaa16adb5cd4a9a.jpg https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a6/12/cd/a612cd7f7e376706a21148aae3bb616b.jpg...See MoreKitchen Ideas to brighten it up/ update it?
Comments (8)Wow, yours is the house with the random shelves you don't need, right? And you've been living there almost a year. What changes to you hope to do? To start, I would paint the walls a bright, cheerful apple green or turquoise. Possibly remove the spindles and the curvy piece over the sink. Can you tell what the backsplash is made of? Whether it is possible to remove it or not? I wouldn't invest in backsplash or counters until you know what other changes you hope to make. Do a search on painting cabinets--much harder and more complicated than you might think. Good luck!...See Morehow do I LIGHTEN this kitchen up??? please!
Comments (7)Can you share your budget for changes? Your kitchen is very pretty, but I can see how insufficient lighting and dark cabinets could be frustrating. (I love the cabinets by the way.) I do think some brushed nickel hardware can add a bit of bright jewelry to your kitchen, but it won't make a big difference in the overall brightness of the space. In terms of lighting, I think megs1030's suggestion for under cabinet lighting is a great one. That would probably make a pretty substantial difference. Consider hiring an electrician to add recessed lighting in the ceiling. It kind of looks like there might already be one fixture near your ovens. You could consider painting the walls a lighter color. What you have now looks really nice with the finishes, but it's a mid-tone color so something light would bring some more brightness to the space. You could replace your countertops with something much brighter - closer to white. Obviously that would be a substantial cost to replace what are already lovely countertops just to bring more brightness to the space. Probably much more cost effective to just add lighting. One more suggestion that is a bit of a personal choice: you have a lot of items on your countertops. It's not messy or cluttered in any way, but there are a lot of items that could be tucked away potentially. I find my kitchen looks brighter when the countertops are almost completely clear. Put your knives in a drawer instead of a countertop block. Put whatever appliance that is over the dishwasher into the pantry. Put the oils into the pantry or in a cabinet. Obviously this changes the function of your kitchen so it may not be for you....See MoreMo Kotes
