Kitchen Ideas to brighten it up/ update it?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>My husband and I bought our home in October and the kitchen is very bland. We would like to give it a fresh coat of paint and possibly change the backsplash. Any ideas on DIY updating or things you would do to change the kitchen to update it/brighten it up? Thank you!!

PS. We like the farmhouse style! We raise chickens so a lot of our decor is chicken themed

I would remove the backsplash, the spindles and the curvy valance above the sink. You could probably replace the hardware on your cabinets as well. I might replace the mini blinds to a more neutral color, I'm personally not a fan of colored blinds, but maybe that's just me. Get some paint samples and make sure you like them with the color of your cabinets before painting the entire room.

Wow, yours is the house with the random shelves you don't need, right? And you've been living there almost a year. What changes to you hope to do? To start, I would paint the walls a bright, cheerful apple green or turquoise. Possibly remove the spindles and the curvy piece over the sink. Can you tell what the backsplash is made of? Whether it is possible to remove it or not? I wouldn't invest in backsplash or counters until you know what other changes you hope to make. Do a search on painting cabinets--much harder and more complicated than you might think. Good luck!

I looked back over your pics this morning with pleasure, and I just thought of something. Can the light over the island be lowered? More light on the front of the cabinets would really make the room feel lighter. Can't tell from the pics if dropping the light puts it in the way or not. The chandelier style is the problem--there is so much metal below the bulbs that getting the bulbs where you would like them just may not work. Not a big project if it will help.

Get a lighter counter that has some reflective characteristics, repaint the walls with a lighter colored paint, and live with it for a while before doing the backsplash. We have medium dark cherry perimeter cabinets in our kitchen that faces SE, but there is a 10' deep front porch with an 11' roof including overhang that darkens the kitchen. It has a triple window over 7' wide and 4' high, and two 10" SunTunnels. The counters are a medium green granite. The center square island has creme painted cabinets and a medium light limestone/marble top. My walls look like they are about the same color as yours appear in your picture, and the floor is cream colored cork. The kitchen feels too dark to me. Our lower level galley kitchen has similar medium dark cherry cabinets with a light semi-shiny patterned laminate, and the paint is a lighter shade of the paint that is upstairs. The triple window 7' wide by 4' high is 24' across the room from it. This kitchen should feel darker than the one upstairs, but doesn't, no matter what time of day or night it is. Both kitchens are well lit. I am going to paint the upstairs kitchen a lighter better color that makes both the cabinets and counter top have a little more umph. If I could change to a lighter counter top in the upstairs kitchen, I would. There is no doubt in my mind that these 2 changes would make my upstairs kitchen feel lighter, based on how much lighter the lower level kitchen feels. Anne

I have most of the colors in this thread on my walls now. I tested Gray owl and Stonington Gray in the bathroom and am going with Gray owl. Stonington is too blue. I have Revere Pewter, Edgecomb Gray and Balboa mist on a few walls now and am leaning toward Balboa Mist for the living room and dining room and Edgecomb gray for the bedroom. Revere Pewter is too dark. All the colors look different depending on the amount of sunlight in the space. Have you considered changing out your lightbulbs to a 4100K or 5000K colors?

I think lighting will help, as well as considering a lighter backsplash. Idea for art: I bought thin frames at Michael’s and put this poster hanger stuff on the corners in a narrow hallway. They’ve never shifted and it helps with dusting. I put those on all my frames now. The other option would be to hang thin frames using command strip frame hangers...they have thin ones now too. The kitchen is lovely so don’t change too much! Good luck!

Thank you! Those are great ideas! we've done a lot with the outside of our home and recently got married, so instead of a honeymoon we want to work on home updating. The backsplash is this weird plastic panel that we would remove. And I love those bright color ideas for paint. Thank you again!

If you can get the plastic brick off, just paint the wall above the counter edgeing rather than investing in tile.

I agree. You already have a backsplash in the four-inch formica.

It's a nice kitchen. The three things I would change to update it would be the backsplash (I think removing and just painting the drywall is a fine option), removing the scalloped wooden valance above the sink, and painting the walls. I'm not bothered by the spindles, but they aren't something anyone puts in any more.
