Marine Edge on marble countertop

This smallish (1300), 200-ish year old house is topping $800K by a good bit. But I think it is details like this that probably push it up into this bracket.

I have seen vintage shaped marble, I have seen things like this in soapstone but I have not seen a modern fabrication of a marine edge in marble like this. I wonder what it did to the cost of fabrication

That’s really nice. the one thing I miss about tile counters is the lip.

Call around; there are usually places you can take tile to get the edges rounded. Then you can just do the edges with the same tile and have it all look finished. Using a wood trim that matches your cabinets is another option.

Absolutely! The place is called Rugo. If I look around I can probably find the card of the guy we dealt with there, whose name was Gus. As I recall, they either had no weekend hours or they were very limited, but we were able to call and set up evening hours during the week to come look at the stone. They were very nice to deal with, and had an incredible selection of all different types of marble. If I ever figure out how to post pictures, I could show you some. They had slabs outdoors, in a warehouse, and I think there was another warehouse nearby as well. I found it so refreshing because usually we would go to places that had 999 slabs of granite and 1 slab of marble to choose from. This one had almost all marble. The only other stone I remember seeing there was soapstone. Having said all this, unfortunately I could not find the white carrara I wanted there. What they had was more spotted than veined. It looked like a dalmation to me! I ended up finding the right slabs elsewhere, but was kind of sorry I couldn't find it at the place that loved marble so much. It was also the only place I ever went that did not try to tell us we shouldn't use marble in the kitchen :) I think they also do marble work on some of the monuments and public buildings in DC. Anyway, good luck. If Rugo doesn't work for you, I'll be happy to share with you the places we went in Maryland too.

I like it on a sink counter, but could go either way on a cooktop counter. I'm actually meeting the fabricator for our SS counters today. We'll do a marine edge because we're also doing the sink run, but ya know, I could skip it and wouldn't miss it. My last remodeled kitchen had the marine edge on the SS counters. I don't think it ever stopped a spill, but might have saved an egg or two from rolling away. The edge was easy enough to clean though. My just-demolished kitchen didn't have a marine edge (or SS) but did have induction. Boil-overs with induction are really less of an issue than with gas or standard electric. So...no help from me. I guess go with what looks better, or what complements your other shapes better. And now I really don't know what I want either, but I'm going to have to decide by 1 PM.

I like the marble. And, I have that kettle. DH bought it for me the year it came out; I think I'm on my fourth or fifth whistle!

I think Marine edge because boats move with the waves, so having an edge to contain spills, or keep an egg from rolling off the counter, is critical.

I like that more than any edge I've ever seen. I wonder if all fabricators can achieve that?

That looks hard to do. Oh so pretty.

I love a lip on a counter; it's one reason I like my vintage double drainboard sink.

Pal....That's interesting.....I've never seen that detail...but I do own the Alessi tea kettle. 🙃I like the grey cabinets.....I too am still stuck on grey.

Beautiful marble.

That kettle looks much better than mine, which gets heavy use. I'd love to get some of the shine back. I bought it when we remodeled our kitchen in 1986 and replaced the electric range with gas. I was hoping the wide base would help boil water faster. It does help a little, but it doesn't hold much because the bottom of the spout is low.

We've gone through a number of whistles and they only seem to whistle when new. I've thought about buying the metal one but not for $50.
