Marine Edge on Stainless Countertop?

Please help me with this decision. I'm decisioned-out at this point!

I am having a stainless countertop made for the cabinet where a frameless induction cooktop is going to be installed. The cooktop measures 37" x 21.5", and the cabinet is 40" x 26". The stainless countertop is really just going to be a stainless frame around the frameless cooktop.

Should I do a marine edge on this countertop, or just a square edge? I'm wondering about ease of cleaning. I can see benefits of either choice, i.e. a marine edge will help contain any boil-overs... But a square edge might be easier to wipe up around. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I like it on a sink counter, but could go either way on a cooktop counter. I'm actually meeting the fabricator for our SS counters today. We'll do a marine edge because we're also doing the sink run, but ya know, I could skip it and wouldn't miss it.

My last remodeled kitchen had the marine edge on the SS counters. I don't think it ever stopped a spill, but might have saved an egg or two from rolling away. The edge was easy enough to clean though.

My just-demolished kitchen didn't have a marine edge (or SS) but did have induction. Boil-overs with induction are really less of an issue than with gas or standard electric.

So...no help from me. I guess go with what looks better, or what complements your other shapes better. And now I really don't know what I want either, but I'm going to have to decide by 1 PM.

We just had stainless counters installed. I can tell you how we sourced and priced it. We have an L shape that is 13'9" in one direction and about 5' in the other direction. Near the corner is a double integrated sink and a drain board (sloped area, but no runnels). We tried getting quotes from 4 sheet metal fabricators in San Diego - the cheapest was $6000, the most expensive was $8000. We started giving up our dream of stainless counters. Then my husband went to restaurant supply place - he asked if they could make it. Their quote was $3700 (plus shipping and tax). It worked out to just over $4000 as the final number. It was fabricated up in Los Angeles by a vendor they work with. This put the pricing less than the silestone counter we had been considering. Ours is a 16 guage. We also have a turned up backsplash... which added tot he cost. We've had it in for 3 weeks. We've made pizza dough and pie dough on it - great surface for both. It's super easy to clean. If I could reclaim the section full of power tools (we're mid-remodel and DIY) I'd be thrilled. Sorry for the poor quality of this picture - this was taken the night we lifted it into place. Tamara....I know this thread is old, but your kitchen is simply stunning! Are your cabinets Chantilly Lace? I read you kitchen delays and had to smile. I've lost weight and sleep over my darn remodel. Who knew how stressful this would be? If you used Chantilly Lace did you paint your ceiling the same. I just ordered my paint yesterday and I'm freaking out that it might be too bright.....

We were just saying last week that out of all the decisions we made in the kitchen, the stainless run of counter top was one of the best. Our main sink, DW, and stove are on that L shaped counter, and really, it's the work horse of the kitchen. We absolutely LOVE that counter top. Don't get me wrong...the granite is pretty, but the Stainless is amazing in a working kitchen. We did a marine edge on ours, so spills and leaks from cutting stuff don't drip over the edge. We encorporated a drain board on one end that goes into the sink. Ours was made of 14 guage stainless and we had it "roughed" up which means they put about a million scratches into it so you don't have to wait for patina to develop :o) I highly recommend that. Cost...ours was more (significantly) than our granite. Stainless went up with the cost of oil, but I'd imagine it's down a bit again. We also had planned on 16 guage, but given all of the twists and turns in ours (we notch out at the stove, in at the sink, incorporated a sink, drainboard, and the marine edge (LOVE THAT!) so it was a complicated countertop. They actually said it was the most complicated one that they'd done. It was almost twice the cost of the balance of our granite counters. Would we do it again, no matter the cost? Yes, but I'd always do a marine edge (ours is modified to be a bit lower than standard, just a 1/8" raise). I'd go without wine for a few weeks to afford a stainless counter :oP They're beyond fabulous if you do any real cooking in your kitchen...and if you don't...they look pretty LOL They're also very easy to clean. You can't hurt them. This is why they're so popular in professional kitchens.

desertsteph - thank you. I do think the counter top would look great with bisque. It looks really good with the stainless range top too - next to the stainless the grey pops. I got lights in the kitchen today and I can't get over how much I love the CT. I just keep saying - OMG, I can't believe that is mine (and I thought I was going to really miss my work horse white Formica!) Thanks Texas_Gem. One step closer!!! I m sooo ready to be done!

Thank you both for the help. Sorry I didn't see those earlier posts! I did search on "marine edge" and that didn't come up for some reason.

It's great to see how happy everyone is with their SS countertops. Now I'm thinking I should make that countertop bigger... Ahhh decisions!

Camille, are you in NH? ... I noticed the nh at the end of your username. If you haven't already found someone to fabricate your countertop I can high recommend the guy who did mine, he did a beautiful job.

HI Erika, Yes, I'm in Southern NH. I posted here several weeks ago requesting a good stainless fabricator in the area. I was planning to use Weiss Sheetmetal in Avon, MA. Is that who you used?

I decided to skip the marine edge this time around. I guess I've been doing just fine without it while living with my pink counter (IF I use the dish drainer under the dish rack). But if you do go for it, don't worry about the cleaning--a marine edge won't make it harder.
