Confederate Star Jasmine spacing?

I purchased 6 Confederate Star Jasmines to grow along the back of my chainlink fence. I'm seeing mixed answers on how far apart I should space them to cover the fence, ranging from 3-6'. My plan is to start with the 6 I have now and then propagate more from them as needed. The fence is maybe 35'?

Each will grow more than big enough to cover that length without additional plantings being needed. But: this is really a shade plant, looking much better (uniform deep green) on a north facing wall than in a sunny exposure (constantly discolored reddish etc.) even in my dull climate area.

Mine grow like weeds in various parts of my yard (I don't have any on the north walls of the house; my favorite is on an umbrella trellis outside my front door, which faces west).

I'd go with the 6' spacing. If you have western orientation, I've had success with putting the hose on full blast, right at the base of the plant, for 10 minutes... Twice a week during the summer; once a week (or two) in winter. Oh, and I've got mostly Houston Black Clay here in Central TX, east of I-35. :-)

Laura, I'm not too convinced that Confederate Jasmine would be a good choice for such an important role in your landscaping. Your Birmingham climate is the reason ; CJ can be severely injured or killed outright by temperatures much below 10ÃÂ° F. You might have a few mild winters and then POW! That might be another good question for the Extension people. And hopefully, some people closer to you than I am (Huntsville) can advise you, too.

I don't have experience with Confederate jasmine and an aluminum fence. I do have a chain link fence (which I assume is the same as an aluminum fence), and it actually has trees growing through it, but it hasn't affected the strength of the fence. So I'd feel pretty sure that the Confederate vine won't do any damage to yours, but hopefully others will chime in as well.

Confederate jasmine is basically hardy here, but it may not come back after a really hard winter. But I believe more than one type of jasmine gets called "star" jasmine, so you need to make sure it's Confederate jasmine -- Trachelospermum jasminoides.

Mara, did you read above that the star jasmines sold today in nurseries are likely to be the Madison variety even if not labeled as such? It seems when a superior cultivar is introduced and it's not possible to tell the difference by looks alone that it will be propagated rather than the old variety and if not named no royalties have to be paid. I was told that by someone in the nursery business when I was searching for Madison without success. I tend to believe it seeing how my neighbor James' plants were more hardy than what I had. Did the above ground stems on yours split? Keep us posted on whether they return and I will do the same.

One Devoted Dame they will be facing Southeast on my fence so hopefully they don't get too scorched. I tracked the sunlight and it gets a good 5hrs of morning and early afternoon sun. I'm also in Houston and have black clay too! Glad to know they can thrive here! It was between Star Jasmine and Carolina Jessamine and I wanted white flowers.

I guess I'm lucky, 'cause my umbrella trellis faces west, literally against a deep red brick wall, and my Confederate Jasmine is beautiful. Never been scorched. And I don't have any shade yet, 'cause my house is in a newer subdivision, and all the trees are relatively small.

I'm also in Houston and have black clay too!

Same here. I wanted a non-toxic, evergreen vine with *white* flowers, and CJ was pretty much my only choice, lol.

Also, did yours survive the freeze?

"The freeze" referring to the crazy Snowpocalypse we had back in February 2021? Or the more recent smaller freezes we've had here lately?

Back in 2021, I took zero chances, 'cause I had baby plants, so I brought them inside the garage. That was the only time I took any measures to save them from cold weather. Earlier this month, when we had freezing temps, I didn't bother protecting anything, since nothing I have is new, *and* we've had lots of rain to keep the still-warm soil wet.

One Devoted Dame oh interesting I've never heard of Houston Black Clay Soil! I moved to Houston 2yrs ago, I'm originally from Austin so your comment about I-35 should have tipped me off that you weren't in Houston. The freeze here wasn't nearly as bad. We got a tiny blanket of snow but things thawed out fairly quickly other than on shady corners and bridges. I think we got down into the 20's. I feel like things are much easier to grow here but the humidity caused issues with leaf spot on my crape myrtles this year. Did you actually dig up the Jasmine for the freeze or are they kept in pots?

P.S. I was referring to the 2021 freeze. We haven't gotten lower than 45 this year.

I wasn't talking about scorching, I was talking about the leaf color being dominated by reddishness and other unattractive tones in sunny aspects. Making it look like the plants have a soil mineral deficiency. This behavior is absolutely consistent in my area, which historically has the dullest summers in the Lower 48. I've even been able to observe this difference in a local institutional setting with two large wall plantings growing near one another, yet only the fully shaded one being entirely green. (And this latter having grown several stories high during the period of observation, showing again that getting coverage of 35 ft. linear feet of fence with 6 specimens should not be a problem).
