Where is your family room TV? Over Fireplace TV?
Comments (15)I have one over a fireplace, and I love it. the rest of that wall is windows, so it was the only spot. My fireplace is gas, and there are clear guidlines about the clearence from combustibles and the like. There are heat concerns. It's commonly stated that you can't have the TV on when the temp there is 95 degrees. Easy for me to monitor, I just keep the fireplace remote there, sometimes programed to turn off the fire when the area hits that. If the fireplace is woodburning, controling the heat could be a problem and you might simply have to turn the tv off sometimes. I suspect that the 95 is a purely random number, though. Lots of homes get that hot, and we haven't heard many reports in the media about flat screens failing from it. To me, watching the fire or watching the tv are different activities that I rarely want to do at the same time. I love having the fire on for conversation, reading, playing a game, and those are times I'd rather have the TV off anyway. We do burn the fire to take the chill off the room on movie nights, but at a pretty low level. As to veiwing angle: it's about 5 ft above the floor, and the seating is about 12 feet back. It seems a little odd if you are used to a conventional set just inches off the floor, but you quickly adapt. It isn't at all uncomfortable for me or any of my family [so far as anyone has ever mentioned], and the kids and dogs don't block the screen everytime they walk by. Overall, I think its a good solution for many rooms. Just be sure to plan for power and signal up there: you don't want a lot of visible wires....See MoreWhat size rug for our family/TV room?
Comments (8)Again, agree. As I look at your photos, I have to wonder about rug fit. Your LR looks narrow because the hearth is in the room. So to make that dimension fit a store-bought rug, you might not get the length to cover the room more fully. It might be a good idea to put your room dimensions to paper, and then see how a rug would fit. An alternative is to buy a piece of carpet and have it bound. There is so much to choose from these days, and if you luck into a remnant you like, it is very economical. What room is next to the LR? You can also lay an area rug there. Two complementary rugs would be fine. And about tripping -- the rugs should be sturdy and substantial (with padding)....See MoreBoring fireplace wall in TV room
Comments (10)Bev, I like the style of those bookshelves. They are unique and a possibility. Claire, I love the rug suggestions but we spent most of our budget on carpet and paint and a hundred small things that needed to be replaced. decoenthusiaste, I think you are right about the man cave sofas! hmmm, I hadn't thought of that but I agree with you. There is just a dining nook in this house so no room to move the china cabinet. I have thought of replacing it with a buffet height piece so that it doesn't overwhelm the space. I doubt that hubby will want to move the TV or replace his beloved recliners. I have had nice art on the mantle but the brick is so busy, art competes with it. Loving your ideas! Thank you....See Moreideal fireplace/TV arrangement for family room
Comments (11)Have you thought about reducing the corners and simplifying this house plan? Here is a hurried attempt at some possibilities. Reduced the jogs and bump ins/outs. One decent size dining area. More of a flow/traffic pattern between master bedroom, closet and laundry (which is to to right of mudroom.) Garage door entering more into mudroom to encourage containment of everyone's things. If you do away with the half bath, using your second bath for kids and guests, there would be more square footage for utility storage or some pantry space. Re-routing the walk way to bedrooms and closing up the great room corner could give you a spot for the tv, or flip and put tv on main wall, fireplace on shorter wall? Ran out of time with kids bedrooms, but I think I would opt for reach in closets, using their placement as a buffer to the great room wall and bathroom. I also would put a closet in your entry and how about an exterior door in your master? Hope this gives you some ideas-...See Morearcy_gw
