Is this countertop quartzite, quartz or marble?

Here are some photos, this was my kitchen in my previous house, and I'm wondering what it was now that I am renovating a kitchen in my new house. The listing when we bought the house said "quartzite" but it would etch (I think? there would be dull marks) with acidic liquids, which I think quartzite doesn't do. it was very resistant to chipping and stains. I'm specifically wondering what the stone name might be so I could find something like it again.

There are quartzites (natural stone) that are hard, but porous and those need to be sealed. So your counter could have been one of the "white" quartzites or it might have been a marble/dolomite.

Quartz is man made and would not have etched.

If you want a quartzite that is usually pretty "bulletproof", then you should look at Taj Mahal.

I actually really liked this counter and didnt find it difficult to take care of - the etching didnt bother me. I had actually thought it was just quartz but now that Ive looked at a zillion quartz patterns I think it must be a natural stone. I wanted to put it in my new kitchen if possible. I was also considering perla venata or Taj.

I haven't seen any other quartzites that look like it... the closest I have seen was something called "white monaco" on a stone yard website but it didnt specify whether it was actually quartzite or marble.

I love that slab and would grab it in a second - faster than a second if it is quartzite. I have marble (montclair danby) and had "Granite Shield" sealant put on it. It was sprayed on and did not change the texture of the stone. It is supposed to be a lifetime sealant. Today I canned 24 jars of tomatoes. My friend helped me and she was slopping cooked tomatoes all over the place. Not one stain and very little if any etching (the Danby seems a little harder than the european marbles). My only problem with the marble is around the sink. You have to be careful not to bang heavy pots into it or it will ding. I never had this problem with my AB granite. And Quartzite is supposed to be hard like granite. If you go with a marble which is softer, I would suggest a farmhouse style sink.

I'm in the same dilemma and am leaning towards Neolith, a large-scale porcelain, which comes in a couple of marble colors: Estatuario and Calacatta. It's largely indestructible (I tried on some samples), but I'm not having much luck in finding slabs to view other than an Estatuario one that I generally liked though it had a bit too much white. I think Calacutta would work better with the buttery cabinets we'd like, but I'm reluctant to go with it without seeing slabs. The fact that a mitered edge won't have the pattern is concerning too, and I'd love to see that as well. Decisions.

I disagree with Navy Momma. I wouldn't put anything on any countertop without a trivet other than wood and stainless steel. I've had Cambria in my kitchen in the past which I loved (previous kitchen refresh) and now have FBQ in the kitchen. In reality, the Cambria was better as far as durability and I highly recommend that brand in particular. It's also made in my home state so maybe I am a bit biased. When we did our full gut remodel of the kitchen, we opted for the FBQ because I found the perfect slabs, colorwise. There can be a lot of variation in the FBQ. In the past I have said it's been awesome, however, in full disclosure, there is etching. I don't care. It happened about a year or so after installation as far as I can tell. I'm the only one that can see it. It's still a beautiful stone and I love it! If I were in your position, it would be based on price and finding the perfect slab in both the quartzite (if you're okay with etching) and the quartz.

I think it's best to focus on getting a quartz that is either very solid and/or in a contrasting color to your marble (a distinct shape like herringbone also helps). If they are too close in pattern, the faux finish will stick out, imho. Regarding the backsplash behind the stove -- some people have had problems, especially those that fry a lot. I've been diligent with sealing and wiping up after use. (As aside, we have pure white quartz in one kitchen and gloss black granite in another -- both show crumbs and smears, for different reasons. The grey quartz shows the least).

Quartzite and engiineered stone don't etch. Marble does. You have to test to ascertain.

Most marbles I tested (and of course the one I bought) were very stain resistant. They do look different with the honed finish this one seems to have. Could be something as "mundane" as a white cararra (which I think is anything but mundane).
