Briggs Quantum IC vs Honda GXV
Comments (60)I have a 8hp tecumseh on my snowblower, 10hp Briggs intek on my chipper, 18hp Briggs Vangauard on my generator, a 25hp Kohler Command on my tractor and a honda 5hp lawnmower. All start easy and run great. None of them burn oil. The honda is the quietiest but also has a biggest muffler compared to the others. I will say that I'm disappointed in the honda mower. The underside of my deck is completely rust. I also had to replace the cable to engage the tranny, but had to buy the whole assembly as a kit to get the cable. My deck clogs easily whether I use mulching blades or regular blades and the cut isn't that great. The engine my be great, but the rest of the mower is not worth the 400 paid for it. With proper car, air filter changes, oil changes, new spark plugs, and good gas, any engine will last a long time. I know a lot of people that just put gas in and go. Then the engine breaks and the equipment is the biggest piece of junk. For the average homeowner, I don't think the engine should be of a concern. I think the unit its mounted too should be of more importance....See MoreAlternatives to ice machine? Ice maker in full-size wine cooler?
Comments (2)Hi I don't have answers sorry. I just read your post and this is an issue for us as well. We have a side by side with ice/water in the door but the space is too narrow for a family member who is wheelchair bound to be able to access most of the items in it. We are going to get an all refrigerator all freezer pair because they will be wide enough for him to get close enough to get things...and the Whirlpool sidekicks have slide out shelves. But none of these have ice/water in the door. I love my crushed ice and not to mention the accessiblity of the ice and water in the door. I thought about an ice machine but then my husband told me that they have to be cleaned often because the temperature in an ice machine allows bacteria to form versus an ice machine in a freezer? I don't know much about it...just started researching. I don't understand why the manufacturers don't offer ice and water in the door on all refrigerator all freezer pairs. I saw there are some refrigerators with top freezers that have water in the door....See Moreundercounter ice machine
Comments (97)I have the Monogram and can confirm the issue with the mold in the tubing too and it seems like black mold and flakes of green calcium like you see on copper. It reminded me of the clear 1/4” irrigation lines you can buy for aquariums and such. I had clear piping for some plants on the deck and they would clog with calcium build up. I switched to the black 1/4 inch tubing and the problem went away. I wonder if replacing the piping in the GE Monogram with black tubing would solve the issue. It seems like light contributes to the growth with my experience with clear tubing in irrigation. Does the little bit of light the ice maker gets cause the issue? I am not sure, but I may try black piping the next time I clean it. The half inch stuff they sell at Lowe’s should work and I may put some 90 degree elbows in with the connections to help out with the length of the piping. I know the ignorance is bliss will come in to play at least with the black piping. I wonder if bleach will work work any better than the phosphoric acid cleaner to clean the pipes? May give that a try before the phosphoric cleaning The GE Monogram is loud. The water valve is just plain old loud. Not sure why a water valve has to be loud! i was think of putting a carpet remnant underneath, and cutting a big piece of styrofoam to put beneath the door. Heat displacement versus sound will be the battle....See MoreReplace or repair Scotsman ice maker?
Comments (6)Not sure if it's worth repairing, as I don't know what the problem is or what it would cost to fix. I do know that ice machines haven't fundamentally changed over the last few decades. I'd look first at the Manitowoc SM50 for its build quality, quietness, filtration, interior lighting, and neat crystal-clear octagonal ice cubes. It even has a button that will temporarily cease ice-making for 2 to 6 hours if you need perfect quietness, as it is designed for quiet office boardrooms as well as residences. The Scotsman Brilliance or their somewhat less expensive DCE33 series, are good second choices. It too makes crystal-clear, nicely shaped ice, and like the Manitowoc has a convenient high-mounted ice-storage area, and is 15" wide. The Brilliance has a lighted bin. Both of these should be reliable, especially the Manitowoc - these companies mostly build larger machines for commercial customers like restaurants, hotels, and bars where reliability is crucial. These devices need a drain; if you don't have access to one that's below the level of the machine, you'll need to specify the optional water pump. Don't know much about the Sub-Zero. I don't like the Whirlpool-built ice machines (a.k.a. Kitchenaid, Maytag, Jenn-Air, Kenmore, etc.) - small rectangular ice cubes and lower, harder to reach ice compartment. The Marvel also has an oddly low ice compartment, rather than at the top of the unit when you open the door. I don't have much/any experience with GE's, U-Line's or Perlick's ice machines, beyond that only U-Line has an undercounter refrigerator that makes clear ice cubes (24"w)....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
