How to use a traditional dining room in open space 'dining area' plan.

Oval Queen Anne table/chairs/sideboard---suggestions for mixing chairs, durable fabrics for everyday USE. I want to USE these pieces rather than relegate them to filling a room. In other words how can we transition them to a more contemporary space in a new home.

Photos would help. What are you willing to change? I find most 'queen anne' dining chairs to be uncomfortable so I would swap those out but of course that's an assumption. My 'great room' has English regency furniture, art deco, midcentury, and contemporary all mixed together.

Thank you for all of your feedback. We are not formal dinner party people. We are a family with young kids and parties are usually outside by the pool. Our table can be made larger for special occasions but we could also move the table slightly if needed for Christmas, Easter, etc. As for the suggestions to make changes to the half bath (our pool bath) we have reasons for why we chose it that way- not an oversight. And just as importantly is it too late to make any major changes the house is framed, plumbed, etc. Also as previously mentioned- coat closets in Florida are a little superfluous. I did start to measure the table, etc but instead just took an over sized tablecloth I have over and use that and there is plenty of space for the table where we intended however I like the idea of wiring in a junction box in case i should change my mind at a later date. As for the windowed corner- I do not know for certain how that area will play out but our hope is to have a sectional, tv and chairs in that area. However- we are getting new living room furniture and so I'm not certain exactly what will go where at this point. Thank you again for the feedback!

You need to post a to scale floor plan and pictures of the space . As for space around a dining table you can go very min. at 24” but IMO not really comfortable. That is why we need the plan and pictures to really give helpful ideas. A little bit about your family also helps

Without an actual to scale plan of the space there is no way of knowing what will fit and I love the low cabinet with the art BTW. I think you might be able to put a round table in the DR but I need measurements of the spaces I never like fake greenery or flowers and the mirror is really not reflecting anything worth seeing twice

Parsons chairs work with all styles. You can get them slipcovered and then be able to wash the covers. Or if you have children or grandchildren, get plastic covers to use on them while they're in their messy stage - and a dropcloth for the floor. :-)

I think we need to see what the furniture is like in the sapces around this space. I have no issue with mixing to some extent but I need more context . You are building a modern home what was te reasoning behind that choice to begin with ?I would maybe keep the table and the sideboard but the cahirs not so much. I think we need to know a bit more about what you need in cahirs I do not like slip covers in contemporary spaces thay always look sloppy IMHO.. So I think wait until you are ready for the decor step then post pics .

It’s hard to be specific without knowing more — seeing the finished rooms and what definition of contemporary you want — but mixing traditional dining furniture in a modern room can be a great look.

For now, I’d start searching for inspiration pictures to get ideas.
