Suggestions for help after surgery?
Comments (25)Mwheel, thanks so much for your comment. I am going to follow your example and check out a yoga class in my neighborhood, and then see what my body has to tell me about that! Westgardener, my understanding is that homeopathic medicines trigger healing responses by providing slightly disruptive reactions. The medication I took was Traumeel, and I've linked to their website if you want to check it out. Traumeel is intended to reduce inflammation. Arnica (arnica montana) is supposed to soothe muscle aches, reduce inflammation, and heal wounds. Comfrey (symphytum officinale) is supposed to be helpful with injuries to bones, sinews, and tendons. I have found that I respond very well to homeopathic medications when I have serious injuries, but I feel I would be irresponsible if I didn't recommend that you see a practicing homeopath or alternative/complementary medicine professional before pursuing any of these things for yourself. Aromatherapy is, as I understand it, one of the newest of the plant-based healing practices, and is based on the idea that volatile oils carry some essence of the plant that you can absorb through inhalation to promote psychological and physical well-being. I think aromatherapy works slightly differently for different people -- for example, you're not going to get a positive response if you happen to dislike or have a negative association with a particular scent. I read the labels of essential plant oils and then take a sniff -- I can usually tell within a few seconds whether that scent will make me feel better, or different, or not. I used aromatherapy -- putting a few drops in a dish of steaming hot water and then leaning over to inhale, or putting some in an electric plug-in diffuser -- to encourage a more positive mood that I believe supported my overall healing process. I find the scents of bergamot and neroli deeply interesting and freshening, and I liked walking into my living room and being enveloped by their citrusy warmth....See MoreBreast cancer treatment care package
Comments (19)Seagrass, you made me smile with the "old hippie" reference. That's what my kids call me and I remind them that I'm not THAT old, geez. When my Aunt Ronni had her mastectomy, nothing tasted good except chocolate milk, I think she lived on it. Nothing I could cook, bake or buy sounded good, except that chocolate milk, so maybe chocolate really does have medicinal qualities. I think the hats and scarves are a good idea, it's getting cold here, as well as a funny video or two, something family friendly since she has small children. I think letters and cards with maybe an occasional "I'm thinking of you" surprise would be nice, not overwhelming but enough to let her know you're thinking of her. Good luck to your friend and her family, she (and they) will be in my prayers. Annie...See MoreFrom 'Discussions' - Breast cancer treatment care package
Comments (8)BTDT....and bought the Tee shirt I would suggest something to make her laugh....and make her laugh again and again. Sorry I don't do "inspirational meditation" type music....but your friend may. My tastes lie more in something like Beethoven's 5th piano concerto, which I find really powerful "go get 'em" music. Perhaps a funny movie....even if it's an oldie but goodie....and anything that will make her feel like her old self. I don't know your friend....so can't suggest specific things, but for me it was something like wild earrings and a hat that said "Outta my way I'm curing cancer". But you know your friend....maybe she's the simple pearl earring type... Easy on the ginger though if she's doing chemo....her mouth well may be too sore. One of the most disconcerting things for me was the loss of not only my hair, which I could easily disguise with a wig, but the loss of eyebrows and eye lashes. I hated the look of drawn on eye brows....but someone showed me a brush on eye brow color that looked much more real. Your friend is lucky to have you and her support system. Comments (20)A soft pillow say about 16x16,no bigger.I found this very useful as I had to make many runs to the bathroom,if you know what I mean.I kept this in the bathroom on top of the hamper so I could lay my head down while I was in there. My stomach cramped something awful and i'd break out in a sweat that you could mop up.Dh always had to bring me a washcloth,to wipe the sweat, and wash my face with cool water.. Going with the above suggestions,i'd also recommend those pads that they use in the hospital to put on her favorite chair in case she has the same symptoms that I did. Peppermint tea, lots of bottled water, and some flavorings to go in them. The wal mart brands of flavoring are very good and don't have any artificial sweetners. Word puzzles were my favorite as I couldn't concentrate long enough to read a book.My puzzles were on my kindle. As someone else said some cute soft hats, especially for wearing to bed as your head gets pretty cold if all your hair falls out. Those little bootie sock were also wonderful,at least for me,because when my feet got cold,i was cold all over.I've picked up many colors of these at the 99 cent store. Since al my sisters and the biggest part of my family is 3000 miles away, phone calls were nice, with the understanding that some days I may not feel up to talking, and they understood,so dh would tell them how it was going and they were all very understanding. There are some beautiful "thinking of you cards out there,my favorite by far were the ones from "The learning Tree,or leaning tree, can't remember which. That also comes with the chemo, can't remember. Wishing your sister brighter days ahead, and a full recovery.Seems like forever when you are going thru it,but goes quickly when you look back on it.At least that is how it's been for me,it's been 5 blessed years since my scare, surgery, chemo etc. God Bless her and her family as she deals with this. It's all doable.A good attitude takes you along way as well. Never give up!! Kathi,5 years and counting....See MoreBestyears
