Draw a floor plan. Doesn’t appear to be room for much else besides the love seat and couch. You design a room by first deciding on the function. Does someone work from home there? If so, make it a full fledged office space with a nice, roomy desk and comfortable chair, a filing cabinet, bookcase, printer/scanner station, storage, good lighting, etc. It’s too small to serve more than one function.

@elcieg - that's a great idea, thank you! I didn't even think to put the desk back where the loveseat is. I've lived in a 1 bedroom apartment for the last 10+ years so I'm helpless with designing any type of space.

@ShadyWillowFarm - We really don’t have a function for this space at this point. My husband and I both work from home and have a dedicated office (with a printer, filing cabinet, etc.) and when someone is using the office, the other one of us floats around (downstairs living room, basement, etc.). We don't use this often since the desk currently backs right up to the stairs. If I move the desk in the nook area, we might actually use the desk since it would help with one of us walking by in the background.

Why not make it into another office space if you only have one office now, and you both work from home? Your house, your call.🙂

I agree with moving the desk to the wall where the love seat is now. i’d move the love seat to the wall where the desk currently is - placing an end table on both sides of the love seat and a chair ( maybe 2 if there is toom) under the windows next to the end table.

Place a picture over the sofa and wall sconce lighting on either side.

The mirror should be installed on the wall to the left of the sofa (in its current location). when you move the desk to the other wall push it to the left corner which will place the mirror over one leg of your desk.

Move the round end table to the right of the desk and put the plant on it.

Put one large area rug under sofa/seating and the desk area to pull it all together.

Wall paper on all window walls could really make it pop.

I’d call an electrician for the wall scones and to install recessed ceiling lights - also add outlets if you need more for office area. With your office on the second floor the electrician should be able to drop everything in through the attic.

The framed map should go to the left of the single window over your desk in the new location.

Agree with moving the desk to sofa space. A mirror in space to the left of the window would reflect light (and not necessarily cause you to look at yourself all the time) and you will see if someone is entering the space. The map and dog art can find a new home either together or separately. Add a very small table or hassock with tray in front of the loveseat instead of the side table, use the print rug in front of the love seat. Lose the window blinds and consider roman shades, or cellular blinds to control light esprcially if you have zoom or other live meetings. Which brings me to what would viewers see behind you in such meetings? The art, or wall decor should be interesting, but not districting. Have fun with this wonderful bonus space.

As someone else mentioned the first decision to make is the function of the room. If it will be an office space that will give you direction. Will comment that the floors are gorgeous and that the space is flooded with natural light. However, you will need lighting at night. So, would suggest that you replace the existing surface mounted lighting fixture and add recessed can lights to give the room a good lighting level at night and also provide good ambient lighting. Would you consider installing a ceiling fan? Those are almost necessary in the south. If the ceiling is textured I would also recommend getting rid of that and having a nice smooth finish instead. It's a great space! Good luck!

Valinta - thank you so much! I love the idea of roman shades - I loathe those cellular blinds but it does get VERY sunny in that room, especially in the mornings. Would you recommend I ditch the love seat and maybe get 2 chairs and put a little table between it? That would then be in the background and maybe some nice artwork above?

Norwood Architects - thank you, we really love the floors! Can lights would be a great idea but a fan wouldn't be needed since we are in Colorado and that area gets very decent airflow. Don't get me started on the textured walls/ceilings - I hate them and it's throughout the house but after our bathroom remodel, it's on the bottom of the list sadly (our house is ~2700 sq ft.)

Okay, we've moved things around! I think I am going to ditch the couch and maybe get 2 chairs to put against that wall + a little table in the middle. For sure move the desk to the nook but have the shelf portion on the sofa wall with your work area facing the stairs so you can see instantly when someone is there. Plus your work is then totally hidden from the stairway view. Never your back to an entry. You could add open and closed shelving under the window for office and display stuff.

Lots of lighting options - I'd consider styles and colors of the rest of the house - and any future plan for hanging chandelier below.... etc.

LED - idk if this has glare. Seems that coming up the stairs you don't want to look directly into bright bulbs either. Yours has a diffuser.....if you stencil, there are photo-ideas for painted round shapes [to circle a ceiling light].

Hmm - I am in a Zoom now and even with the cellular shades down, it's a lot of light behind me. I am starting to think a new desk (not L shaped) might be the best route. Maybe completely start over with furniture in here to make it work.

@Ashley Stephens I would have positioned the desk with the monitor facing out (only one window behind you) and the credenza part along the wall where your monitor is now. Or, if the two pieces can be separated, I would put the credenza behind on the wall with the one window. Basically, rotate your current setup. I hate facing a wall when I am working.

Thank you @Maureen - the photos you included are exactly my style! We have a printer in our 2nd office so I don't necessarily need that or a lot of other storage. My husband and I both never really print much or keep up with paperwork, so really this space will just be a decorative, fun office space for me.

I am thinking I'll ditch the current desk and everything else (except the rug) and maybe go with something like this and have it freestanding facing the larger wall and my back to the 1 window and two-toned wall. II like the desk entirely hidden behind that wall, but this is better for Zoom calls. You need to be facing a window for the natural light to be on your face. You can use a ring light on cloudy/rainy days but if it is sunny, use the natural light. That also leaves the wall to your left for a new office storage piece like a credenza or file cabinet. If the glare from those windows bothers you when working, get some custom bamboo shades at Lowe's in a shade that picks up the caramel color in the rug. A new ceiling lamp and a brass floor lamp for the corner by the sofa will look great.Move the round brass table to the entry side of the sofa for a bit of bling to be seen as one comes into the space. Also add a lamp to your desk. Try not to use the ceiling light, for a warm and cozy feeling. Ceiling lights are great for seeing how to clean the space, but they do not enhance the ambiance unless they are interesting to look at. And speaking of visual interest, the map isn't that. If you need it for your work tasks, move it close to the desk. I would be something fun and colorful to hang 5" above the sofa. Don't forget a trash basked if you don't have a shredder.
