Ideas on how to extend my upstairs into the vaulted ceiling space.

Any ideas on how to extend my upstairs to the end of my house? The original plan was to have vaulted ceilings and a loft-type thing but I'm not interested in heating the empty space in the winter and I would like to use the space now.

The rafters are engineered to span the space so that part is probably all set. My question is more of how to support the second floor. I'll consult a pro before building but I wanted to get some thoughts from you guys before I did that...and if it's something that a homeowner can do.

I'm thinking that the I'll have to support the 2nd story main beam with posts that are over the main beam in the basement. Then just lay joists across. I'll have to take out my top windows too.

It it actually seems pretty simple (not talking about the electrical, etc). What problems will I encounter? Who has done something like this? Your ideas are sure appreciated.
