Ventless gas logs in what I assume is a heatilator fireplace?

Barbara Adams
last year

I purchased a house five years ago and knew that the wood burning fireplace was unable to be used due to chimney issues. At the time I didn’t know what the holes in the brick were for and hated the looks of them so I had a mantle made to covered them up. Pictures show what it looked like before and what it looks like now.

Fast forward to now and I’d like to get a ventless gas log insert to use instead. When researching I come across heatilator fireplaces which have vents similar to what I have behind my mantle, however, I do not have any bottom vents where cold air would be drawn into the firebox.

  1. Can you have a heatilator fireplace without bottom vents?
  2. Would this option work inside what I assume is a heatilator style fireplace?
  3. Since these old vents are covered by the mantle, will it put out any heat? There is a blower but not sure if it actually moved any air.
