1970’s house needs help!

Hello all,
We are buying about 6 acres that has a had built in 1970 on it. The house is structurally in good shape, nice clean lines, etc but a bit dated on the inside. Any advice on how to update the fireplace, a better paint color than green for the master bedroom/bathroom, and how to find complimentary flooring to go with the tiled hallway/kitchen would be much appreciated! I feel overwhelmed on where to start making this house our new home!

Living room: the brick doesn't bother me at all. I think the color is very good. Think what it would look like if you paint the tongue and groove paneling in the niches white and remove the shelving.

Add art over fire box.

As for wall color, I would go one color through out the house. B.M. Collingwood may do the trick.

As for flooring, LVP, same tone as the kitchen cabinets for the living room.

I should clarify that none of the belongings are ours - we are closing on the house in Dec but I have a small window to get in and paint/update before we actually move it so trying to get it all figured out in advance as much as possible

I will spend some time this evening browsing through it and the site you posted Awm, and the northcrest site, thank you palimpsest. Patty cakes, I have searched for 70s contemporary and 70s remodel on houzz, but had few hits, I'll follow your search suggestion and broaden my search a bit. Mj lb, my house is a two story with a walk out basement (so effectively three stories from the back) with some lovely : / diagonal cedar siding on part of the front with a small, slightly inset front stoop. I'm just flummoxed about where to go from here.

Whether or not your laundry is in the basement, I'd prefer a home with a basement, for added storage and a place for mechanicals. You'll need to see if the homes had aluminum wiring (you can read about issues of homes of this period, elsewhere), and what type of plumbing is installed (some types used in that period were prone to leaks). Homes may have plaster walls and wood floors (better sound absorption/construction) or drywall and plywood flooring. No matter where you look, check for water drainage/potential infiltration points should there be a "100 year" rainstorm. Search for your own home inspector and make sure they're well qualified with years of experience. Note that many of today's home inspectors are reluctant to point out too many negatives for fear that real estate agents won't call them for future jobs. I realize that you're an experienced home owner, but once I began looking for another home, I saw first hand how much things had declined, re: disclosure statements from home owners and real estate agents.

Sweet ! Its like a time warp back to my Mom's house circa 1975, complete with the harvest gold and the flowery upholstered arm chair! I agree the brick is a keeper, the straight no-nonsense rectangular look of it will fit nicely with modern decor/ current colors. I even like the kitchen cabinets - would be easy to stain a dark tobacco brown and find just the right retro hardware. The backsplash is to 1990s though so that would have to go! So much contemporary interior design takes its inspiration straight from this era - its worth considering what you can salvage/ re-purpose. Just dont attempt anything farm-housey with this and youll be good.

Can't really comment on a specific paint colour for your house based only on your pictures but here is something you can do with the room with the fireplace. Paint the back of the built-in shelves in white, and you can either paint the shelves of stain them in a colour to compliment your decor. You can replace the ceiling spotlights (look at Amazon for good prices) as well as the ceiling fan with a more modern ones.
