Shrubs California Gardening Vines

Shrub ID in Pasadena California?

My son's family moved to Pasadena. We are all from Chicago.

They just bought a house that has a lot of shrubs and roses. I think most of the shrubs are flowering types but not ones I'm familiar with, from gardening in Chicago.

Is this a good forum to post photos on, and try to ID them? I tried Google lens, but the images it showed me were nothing like my shrub photo.

They want to fill in the gaps where plants have died. Plus underplant the trees, which are all palms.

But ideally, to have a range of bloom times in conjunction with the existing shrubs. There are no perennials, only shrubs and vines trained on a trellis.

Only the roses are blooming now, in October.

There is a item menu at the bottom of your post. One is a photo.

The photo must be on your desktop.

After you link the photo, you have to wait while it fully loads. Once it goes from cloudy to crisp then - and only then - can you continue with the rest of your post.

Chris, I thought it was Arctostaphylos, too, but it's a relative. One of the Flick people IDed it as Erica baccans, and other pictures of that plant confirm it. bboy, the garden is fairly well labeled, but it's a state institution and the state is hurting badly for money. I imagine staff can't keeping up with replacing many broken, missing, or overgrown labels. The desert (especially the aloes) and fern gardens seem to be the least well-labeled because of how the plants spread. And multi-trunked bushy mature shrubs like this one are also under-labeled.

Thanks for helping out here. This is the only other picture he took of it: He got the cutting in Sacramento if that helps any. The cutting is very woody and redish even up to the tips where the new growth is. I put it in a cup of water and it perked right up. Hubby said it was a small shrub about the size of a basketball and had been planted there for about 3 months.

Julie, i dont know any good GC's in your area..but i can recommend the following.. 1. talk to as many as you can..finding a GC that fits your style takes some work..and finding one that has a great price AND that you can work with can take more work..but this is the BEST way for you to spend your time..it can save you many thousands of dollars. 2. try to talk to different types of contractors..small ones, big ones..Try craigslist.com, try looking in your local FREE weekly newspaper. 3. here are more tips on finding a contractor www.remodelormove.com/disp_article_left.cfm?artID=15 Good luck
