Add new bedding....don't add...when to add...
Comments (9)So, if your bedding is breaking down quickly, why not just harvest instead of adding more bedding? That sounds like a problem that I would love to have. In my bin (It is about 2 feet long, 1 foot wide, 1 foot high), if I put in 2 banana peels and an apple, they will be gone in about a week or two. But the equivalent amount of paper is never devoured. I am going on 4 months with this bin, and it still looks like a bin of dirty newspaper. The worms are multiplying and seem to be happy, but at this pace, it looks like it will be summer before I can harvest. I have to admit that I am getting a bit frustrated. I guess I should be happy since my worms are multiplying and food is disappearing, but at the same time, I would like to see some light at the end of the tunnel so that I can start preparing my NEXT bin....See MoreTo add light or not to add light...
Comments (5)We are DIYers, and originally planned to have cupboards to the counter in one section. Long story, lower cupboard was not delivered with our order, and we now view it as serendipity- cuz it has become our main work/prep space. So, of course there were no UC lights planned for there. After working in the kitchen for a year, DH wanted lights there- so we took down the cupboard (crown molding and light rail hadn't been installed yet), and DH went into attic and we wired it up. Not sure what you could do, if you don't have attic access... I know lots of people have added them after the fact, you can even buy packs of inexpensive lights from Costco... Is it much more... depends on what 'much more' means to you. We have Xenon pucks, and you need one transformer for every three pucks. We have them all wired up to one switch and have them on a dimmer. Now, the dimmer, is used very little on these- so I would pass on that if budget is really tight....See MoreLayout advice needed!
Comments (27)I suspect the DW being open issue may also have to do with when things get done. In our home of two work-outside-the-home parents, the DW is unloaded while dinner is being made and then loaded up w/the breakfast dishes & after-school snack dishes. After dinner, if it's not too late & homework is done, the DW is loaded & run. Sometimes, the dishes don't get done until the next day, again, while dinner is being made. So the dishes are loaded, DW run, DW unloaded. This usually happens several times a week...if the kids have too much homework (hah! when don't they nowadays!) and DH & I can't get to them that evening. Another point I want to make is that just b/c it works for you when it's in the path, doesn't mean it should be put there. Ideally, dish storage & DW should be out of the prep & cooking zones... Yes, sometimes compromises have to be made. But, if the only reason you're putting the DW in the prep & cooking zone is b/c of dish storage location...then I would still think long & hard about it. If you don't think you'll mind the bruised shins/calves and would rather have the dish storage close by than take an extra couple of steps, then fine...you've decided it w/all the information and know the pros/cons. However, if no one points it out, then you won't be making an informed decision b/c no one mentioned it to you. One other point...dish storage can be located in two places...close to the DW or close to the point-of-use (DR/table area). If they're next to each other than great! Perfect! However, usually they're not. So, now, where do you store them? Where you'll be going back & forth several times a day (meals, snacks) or where you'll need them to be once a day when you unload the DW? Each person needs to decide that for themselves as well (and it should be pointed it out). So, if you have two reasons not to put the DW in the prep zone (get dishes closer to the table/DR & eliminate the bottleneck) vs one reason to put it in the prep zone (closer to dishes), then it seems to me the former would win. But, again, YMMV....See Morewill add couple more now that I oculdn't add before
Comments (11)When I first got really interested in daylilies How Beautiful Heaven Must Be was just coming out. I longed for it. Not only because it was such a pretty daylily with great form, but also because of the name. However I also found out back then just how expensive new daylilies can be. I still love it though and it would be a toss up between your Wonder of It All and HBHMB as my favorites of this group. How wonderful that you have both. How do they compare for you as far as growth and bud count etc?........Maryl...See Moreker9
