Remodeling Design Dilemma

Walls and layout help

Hello

We are thinking of renovating our home and taking down some walls. I've attached a photo of the main floor layout. The purple and red walls are load bearing.

I dodon'love the hallway as i fund it is dark due to no natural lighting. Here are the options i keep thinking about amd changing my kind about daily.

1. Removing green wall between kitchen and family, would open space but would remove space for seating as there is a door to go outside on outside wall and fireplace on left wall

2. Remove red wall, could open up space

3.remove purple wall between kitchen and dining room, combine dining room with kitchen. This would be the trickiest to do as there are cupboards, fridge etc on the kitchen side

Any advice is greatly appreciated. What would you do?

Instead of totally removing any of these walls you could have large or larger cased openings. The most popular option would be to remove the wall between the kitchen and family room as in most houses built after 1975 these spaces are open to each other, at least partially. The red wall on the dining room could become a 6'-7' cased opening if you want to get more light into the hallway. Sometimes when walls are completely removed to me it just looks like the builder didn't want to spend the money to put in a wall. If you have an older home you don't need to remove all the walls to "update" your house. Also, removing loadbearing walls is really expensive, so be sure it's really what you want. It's good you're thinking about how it would affect furniture placement, because some people don't seem to do that. They remove walls and then post a question here about how to place their furniture. :-)

Thank you!! That makes a lot of sense. I think my assumption is I should remove walls to update, there are probably other things I can do. Thanks

Thank you both very much for your responses! Biondanonima, we just have 2 adults and one small child. Mostly it's one cook, because right now we just get in each other's way. I agree that placing range and fridge on the east wall could create a lot of distance - would you consider that helpful for two cooks, or would it just be less efficient for one? Would having range and fridge side by side be awkward/an eyesore? Renan, I very much appreciate the diagram - I had a 2nd company here today to take measurements for a quote, and offer thoughts on design, and we talked about a breakfast bar the way you've illustrated it. It very nice to see it drawn up! It does look functional, and I totally agree with inverting the opening of the side door in that scenario. Curious about the 5'3" space on the northeast corner - were you being generous or would you say that is a firm distance for clearance/capping the end of the counter?

@anj_p, you are spot on and sorry I didn’t mention that restriction. The wall where appliance garage is, has drain pipes from upstairs bathrooms. I was told that it would be quite difficult to move that. The range wall is external, so hard to move that. One option to move the range out of that walkway is to move it to the wall with the fridge and move the fridge and sink to the exterior wall. Btw, for the 32” walkway, there is no seating there, just the corner of the island. It is tight and the island can shrink to 36” to increase it, but not sure if it is worth it given that there is nothing else on the wall behind the island for 8 ft, which will leave 50 inches behind the 36 inch island.

Even with that change, you won't have enough room for seating at the island if you want to keep the cabinets on the refrigerator wall too. Do you need the island seating with the kitchen table right next to it? The easiest way would be to put cabinets or shelves where the knee space is instead. If you really want the island seating, you'll need to reduce the cabinets on the wall there to 12" or so, which will give you a 53" aisle--still very tight (and less than is recommended) for seating, with a not terribly useful depth for the pantry cabinets. It seems like a big cost when the kitchen table is right there.
