The microwave looks like the worst offender to me. I'd be tempted to try again with a white one, assuming that's financially feasible.

Agree with @Rachel Lee - the appliances look nice & it’s a change your eye is adjusting to! I do agree that a lighter color on walls would be a great update. Hard to tell from angle & lighting but looks like counters are also green & that’s a lot of green with strong color terra cotta floors. Is the dishwasher in yet? Looks like an open space there. Think about paint color close to cabinet color as Rachel Lee suggests

From your photo the refrigerator looks ‘heavy’ at that angle. can you remove the small glass top table and chair and turn refrigerator so the doors open toward the counter? It appears there is another dining set nearby (back of chair in forground).

Turn the frig?? Sorry, I think that’s a bad idea even if frig space allows it. I think it would create all kinds of problems opening the left door that would be against wall & in doorway. And the microwave is fine. A mix of different appliance finishes is not.

If it were me, i would strip everything out of the space - stuff on top of the cabs, furniture etc to get a good feel for the room - then would paint the walls to match the cabs which would help tone down the contrast and open up the room. i also think the microwave seems the the most jarring - can you replace that with a very low profile hood then put a microwave on a kitchen cart (maybe where the high top table is now?) - I think that would make a big difference

You could consider painting your cabinetry a darker color that would help the appliances blend in more.

Here’s a somewhat related story: yesterday DH and I were washing windows in our living room. I took down the scarves draped around the edges - the only window coverings we have. The scarves are totally sheer nylon, about 15” in width. Very very minimal. After we finished and I was admiring the cleanliness, I thought ”oh how bare they look without the scarves!” Ha! The scarves are EXTREMELY MINIMAL.

I think that’s the issue you have having with your new appliances. You’ll get used to the change.

(But I also agree with painting over your green paint to tie the walls to your cabinets.)

I think the appliances are new/ current looking, , but the surroundings are a bit older and dated lookig, so its such a stark contrast. i agree that uodsting thenpaint colors ro somehtifng fresh and light will help . maybe uodate hardware on cabinets to match appliances, also change locarion of cabinet pulls; seems a but odd how they are placed now, update ceiling fixture,update window treatment woth a pretty fabric shade or wooden/ woven blinds. i think the cosmetic changes will make a big difference. i think you will adjust and get use to it after some tweaks to the kitchen and time

Too bad you did not come here before making those choices since slate is just another color that will be discontinued. As for the new ones I agree part is just getting used to the darker color but IMO the lighting is the biggest issue and then the fridge. Change all the bulbs in the can lights to LED 4000K then remove the fan and light and replace with either more can lights or if budget is tight get a nice 5 head track light also LED 4000K that will instantly make the space feel brighter. I agree an actul hood for the range would be better but I think a bit or rearranging the kitchen could be the biggest improvement I see seating in 2 places why? Take the stuff off the top of the cabinets and the scarf off the window . There is no reason to have dishes on the counter use the DW as often as needed it actually helps keep seals lubricated to make them last longer .IMO no paint for the cabinets they are really dated so just wait to do anything more major in the space until you can afford to do new cabinets. Clean everything really well and enjoy the new appliances .

Your kitchen still has plenty of charm,

Mostly the feeling is just because of the change. You will adapt to it. The appliance change I would make is a different refrigerator. Single door w/ bottom freezer. Also would have selected stainless over slate but that ship has sailed.

I would change out that dark swag over the window for a gauzy white one. And plan to paint the cabinets--removing the center handles, filling the holes and getting new handles mounted at the corners where handles are traditionally placed. That goofy placement pretty much destroys all other efforts.

I suppose off white/almond wasn't available. I paid extra for my stove so it would match what I have. It's been a challenge but not making my home kitchen look like an industrial space with stainless appliances has been a goal. The upside is modern appliances have a live of maybe 5 years so it won't be long until you get to choose again.

Off set the darker appliances and I think kitchen overall will benefit, at little cost. I’d paint the entire open space a warm white, if possible replace fan with a more up to date/less bulky style, add lighter window treatment (see link re fake roman blind), reupholster seats to match, and remove items on upper cabinets for a less heavy look.

We recently remodeled our smaller kitchen and didn’t need new appliances since we’d been “lucky” enough to have every appliance require replacement fairly recently. We considered moving the location of the microwave to another spot instead of keeping it over the range to open that space up a bit more, but ultimately decided we had no better space for the micro that didn’t eat up space we valued. We were having new cabinets installed and decided we would try a new low profile microwave, which are only about 10” high. It looks far less “blocky” and closed in than a standard micro hood. It gives a better sense of openness as well as actual room to stir a tall pot. It takes some getting used to. It wouldn’t work well for short people. See attached.

Also, smaller/counter depth fridge would work much better in your space. That area near the doorway with the fridge, trash and tall table is a really busy bottleneck.

I agree with removing the objects above the cabinets, taking down the window scarf and relocating the cabinet hardware. I personally would attempt painting cabinets to lighten the space. Improving the lighting would also help a lot.

The green wall color is kind of gloomy, too. Seems to be grayed down. Perhaps looks different in real life. If not, then perhaps a lighter shade--pure aqua w/o the gray influence?

It’s difficult to tell from the pics, but is there any way to turn the fridge so it opens toward the window? I think that would help and perhaps you could add a panel on the side so you don’t see so much of the color of it.

Looking at your cabinets around the stove/sink in your last photo, I get the impression you may have originally had oak cabinets which have been whitewashed since the heavy grain shows through. Not sure you can find a product that would do a better job of covering the grain, but it would help modernize the overall feeling if that bit of rusticity could disappear. Clearing out the overload of decor and painting are key, as is changing the lighting to 3500-4000K LEDs and adding some LEDs under the upper cabinets.. A new, contemporary fan must be in the picture too.

Paint the walls a warm white first. Then price out a more modern fan. Next, look for a runner that can pull the colors together. Upgrade the light bulbs as suggested.

Those are the least expensive ideas. If you’re a talented painter, you can redo the cabinets but I would wait till you have the money for new doors so you can update the look of your kitchen with those.

Paint the kitchen like she said a warm White and can that refrigerator be turned to face the other half of the kitchen? And the wastebasket feels like it's in the doorway there?

You definitely do not need that little table and chairs by the refrigerator turn the refrigerator definitely room around and remove the Shelf and remove the top stuff on top of your cupboards that will help a lot you got too much you got good space you don't need to be that cramped up

My Mom and Dad had a house built in 1977. The cabinet maker put the pulls in the same location as the OP.

I agree to taking out the small table and stools, along with the shelf and turn the refrigerator so it faces the cupboards. Leave one stool near the frig. Paint the walls white or off-white and get a colorful valance for your kitchen window, and a nice rug in front of the sink to brighten things up will help.

Is that a pantry beside the fridge? That wall is obviously not wide enough for the fridge to turn, and there is baseboard heat where the bistro table and chairs are. Consider saving up for a bigger project of re-jiggering that entire wall into a better fridge/pantry and moving the baseboard heat.

I think the question is, what are you willing to do? and what would be the budget? i see why people are saying to move the fridge but you have heaters on that wall, and adding heat to the back of the fridge is not a good idea.

Limited budget ideas:

1. remove everything from atop the cupboards

2. remove the window sash

3. remove the small table

4. take down the really large fan and replace with flush light.

5. paint the room

6. add a runner

It is a big commitment to buy new appliances and you will, no doubt, have given lots of thought to what you bought.  I can see why you chose the slate when your preferred choice wasn't available , it ties into your darker counters. To see them in place  and not feel any excitement over the new look can be quite soul destroying.Take all the proffered suggestions that you like and list them in an order,  which may be to rank them as simple to do to harder. Then work your way through making one improvement at a time as budget allows. As you have found one change has changed alot about your room - carry that theme of one or two simple changes like brighter globes (white light over yellow), changing the window dressing to lighter tones. The small changes might have a bigger impact than you realize.

I think your appliances compliment the terra cotta floors and countertops and I think the fridge is fine in that location as long as it doesn't interfer with the doorway opening.. It would be expensive to relocating the hardware--I think I would embrace its quirkiness. I would remove the table, 2 chairs and the shelf above. Then I would replace those items with some sort of kitchen cart with shelves underneath to give you extra counterspace and storage. I think the kitchen cart should have a black or dark gray base to coordinate with your appliances, rather than be white to coordinate with the cabinets. I would get rid of the curtain above your sink, all the knickknacks on top of your wall cabinets, and the heavy-looking ceiling fan. I would find a modern poster or some other artwork for the wall above the cart--something simple, but colorful to coordinate with your floors and appliances. Try to outfit the cart with useful, but attractive kitchen items rather than unncessary knick knacks.

As others have suggested, I would change the wall color, perhaps in the other adjointing rooms as well. This will involve a commitment of time and money, so choose carefully and take your time. I would start by finding a Benjamin Moore paint chip that closely matches your terra cotta floors--since the floors are the domanant color in your space and your wood floors are a close match to the terra cotta. Then choose a whitish or light color that coordinates with your floors fist, cabinets second. The reason why I am suggesting BM, is because BM has so many terra cotta colors to choose from and because their website will make a few suggestions for a lighter coordinating color that may help you narrow down your choices. If you're up to it? Paint the cabinets a deep leafy green. Fill all the hardware holes. the deep color will absorb the appliances.

GET LIGHT! Remove the fan for a nice fixture. Paint the walls a soft white......

Get a runner in front of the sink area. Lose EVERY single doo dad. ...every bit of counter top clutter.

Lose the dated scarf at the window for a nice woven shade with some texture.

Get pretty satin nickel hardware and move on. : ) You're warm, dry, and eating.

Great ideas here. You also might want to google “appliance skins”. There are some that are magnetic, some adhesive, all different colors. Disclaimer—I have no idea how well they work or if it is worth possibly scratching or marring your brand new refrigerator. If anyone here has experience with them, please chime in!
Years ago I had avocado green appliances and needed to sell my house. I hired someone who used a special process to paint my frig and other appliances white! It looked great! Not sure if this could work with the surfaces of today.

We say over and over and over........"Stainless is forever".

So too white toilets and bathtubs.

Over the years.......Harvest gold, Avocado, Copper tone.....bisque.....in every single kitchen app.

Toilets? Pink, black, lavender, brown, green , you name it.

I rest my case. What is done is done, and as Tim Gunn would say? "make it work"

There is nothing wrong with the color of your appliances. Stainless would not have looked much different; in fact, this color might be better. I suspect you just aren't used to the look of new, maybe bigger appliances in your space.
If you take a few suggestions that people have posted, like removing the scarf at the window, getting a runner, etc I'll be you'll like the updated look without having to tear out your whole kitchen as some people seem to think is necessary. If you could take out the fan, I think it would visually open up the space a lot and a new fixture would go well with the updated appliances.

I wonder if the issue is with the size more than a color. Do you have before photos? I would start with Paulo ring the walls, removing window treatment, and replacing light. Maybe new backsplash

I agree with the suggestions to paint the walls, add a shade to the window instead of the current treatment and a colorful runner that will pull it all together and lighten the floor. Updating the fan would help too.
