Curtain rod without center support

I have two sliding doors, one normal size, the other is 100" wide. Both have a transom window about 3 inches above it. My problem is every standard curtain/drape I find to use with O rings, they are all 84" long, but the highest I can place a rod center support is about 81" high. I can't place the curtain rod any higher because the transom window is in it's way. Any ideas?

I'm not sure I understand your dilemma. Are you saying the issue is that the curtains are too long? If so...this problem happens to virtually everyone. You hem the curtains if needed. Hang them first to check.

You also mentioned the width of the doors and your title references no center support, which has nothing to do with the length of the curtain, so I'm not sure I'm understanding your dilemma.

You have to have a center support to span 100". I use them on anything wider than 48". It might help to post a picture if we aren't addressing your question the way you were hoping.

Hi Cook, I purchased a custom rod from Paso Robles a few years ago. Shipping is very expensive, but we live on the other side of the country. I wanted this rod for our dining room, but because of the depth and height of our crown moulding, the support brackets did not fit. Luckily, we were able to use the rod in our son's room. I cannot believe that you would only need one center support for a pole that long. Ours has one center support---and needs it. It is about 12 feet long, and I would think a longer pole would need more support. My advice is to order first one of the supports to make sure it will fit and the curtains will not hang down too low. The way our support is forged, the pole actually hangs down 4" below it. Add an inch or two for rings, and depending upon your ceiling height you may not be able to use the pole, the curtains, and/or open the doors. If you order a support you can at least see how they attach and where the pole will hang. Best of luck--- the poles are excellently crafted and the guy who makes them is really nice.

I'll be very interest in some solutions for this as well! I've got some very big windows that need treatments in the bedrooms and have very little wiggle room/space between trim/moulding and ceiling and I don't want to put a middle support in our trim either.

You should have double studs next to the window trim so install your brackets next to the trim, or within that vertical area. Then extend the rod on each side to the length you want. Once the drapes are up, you won't know where the brackets are, unless you have really large, decorative ones. Of course, doing this won't allow the drapes to open beyond the window but I would prefer this over not hitting a stud. I would try to put the center support bracket on the wall. If you mount it on the trim it's going to throw off the depth of the end brackets. Plus, I think it'll look better on the wall. If space is a problem, you don't have to use the same bracket (that's on the ends) for the center. You may want to use one that is less visible. Since there should be a header across the top of the window, hitting wood won't be a problem. IMO, you really need to hit a stud with the type hardware you intend to hang.

Anybody know for how much length can a conduit curtain rod span?

Depending on the length and weight of the actual curtains/drapes and how they are managed for opening and closing, you may need support at the third points, rather than the mid-point. You will certainly need screws long enough to penetrate into wood studs and framing behind your gypsum board (or other material) walls. Have you done this sort of thing before?

If I don't want to hem or pay for custom length curtains, they are all 84" long. For my doors, I will need rods, about 86" for one, and 120" for the other. If I mount them with center supports, 84" curtains will drag on my floor about 3", which I don't want. I can't mount the rods any higher with center supports because of the transom window.

I removed those old high rods and only want curtains with O rings on the doors. I will leave the transom windows uncovered.

Yeah, the answer is hem your curtains. This is a normal thing that almost everyone who has ever put up curtains has done. I did it myself for all my curtains, as I happen to own a sewing machine although I have barely ever used it and am very unskilled. It came out fine. Some curtains can also be hemmed using an iron-on adhesive tape thing, which is even more low-skill.

If you know anyone who owns a sewing machine this is a very quick DIY project. Otherwise buy some pins, pin the curtains to the desired length, and take them to a dry cleaner, as they usually can do small jobs like this. It will be cheap. This is extremely easy.

I would skip the curtains and look into vertiglides. If you hang 84” curtains, its going to make everything look shorter. If you want curtains, hanging them over the transoms is the more attractive option, it makes everything look taller. why did you move the rods? Amazon has very reasonable 120” panel pairs.

We just moved in, the rods were old and falling out of the sheetrock.

I would put them back over the transoms, get proper sheetrock anchors, and extend them beyond the doors so that the open curtains dont block the doors. Kirklands also have longer reasonably priced curtains. placing the rods as tall as possible makes the entire room look grander. The previous owners had them in the correct position. good luck with your new home. Dont skimp on the rods, thin ones look cheap and sag, spend the extra $$, they will be there a long time.

Yeah, now you've shared a photo I definitely think you should put them above the transom. It will look so much better.

The current rod location is the best if not higher, definitely not below the transom.

From experience, long rods like you have, with heavy curtains, need to be mounted on the wood framing, not in sheetrock. Without a center support, the rod will bow.
