Fireplace wall design help

Would appreciate design help with my fireplace wall. Surround and hearth will be stone. It is 17 feet wide, cabinets are 60” wide on each side by 36” high. Was originally thinking white shelves and small

windows (see framing) but thought too busy. Tv will go on a side wall on right. Welcome to ideas for shelves, no shelves, windows, and space above fireplace. Thank you!

The stone with a raised hearth, do not suit the mantel and surround. You're attempting two different "looks"

on one fire.

If you want stone? All you need is the mantel.

..........OR a more traditional effect See the differences below. Flush or raised hearth. They are different. A very traditional mantel and surround, never works well on a raised hearth, despite you will find plenty of pictures on the internet. There's a lot of bad ideas on the internet.

As to the window idea? Bigger , longer....or skip them.

At this juncture, because you are in two looks? I'd paint those cabinets wall color. It's a lot of doors. Art over just a mantel, and add two great mirrors over the cabinets in wall color. No windows.

Thank you. I had originally wanted to have a flush hearth but didn't realize when they installed the fireplace that they placed it higher and then needed to be raised. The contractors were planning to start the stone today. I feel badly that they worked hard on the mantel and surround. Do you think there is a way to go with the stone fireplace, stone hearth, salvage this mantel somehow? If I did that, would you then recommend the shelves or mirrors? I like the idea of artwork about the mantel.

Those are great, CeleryGirl. I guess I am going to think about adding the wider window on the right only. The one that's there doesn't open and it's too close to the fireplace. Do you all think the window on the right should be the same height as the front window? Should I ignore the ceiling slope or should I incorporate some detail over the fireplace that goes straight up to the ceiling?

New tile around the fireplace is a good idea! My color scheme throughout the space is blue, black white and gold with some warmth pulled in via the hardwood floor and a couple of furniture accent pieces. If the wall is white and the floor is colonial maple what color should the tile around the fireplace be? Wainscoting works too along that wall.

I hate corner FPs too. You will need to see how much it will cost to remove and redo a FP on thet wall where you have the TV now. Is the FP gas now? I agree about the need for storage since IMO all those toys need a home I do not think TV above a FP is a good plan but I guess I needt o know if this FP is a must for heating or only for looks . If the latter then look at elecric FPs more linear and then the TV coulld go above and still be at close to proper viewing height. Look at Besta from Ikea it is perfect for this application if you go electric IMO if you want that TV then the FP is a no go . How long it that wall that would be helpful. I am not sure how old the childs is but those large plastic ply things belong in a space not in the LR so maybe pull one out for playing and then it goes away at night all the little stuff can have a home in the Besta storge that can go under the TV and even have a bit of display if you wanted.These are 2 options that would work

Forget stone. And don't feel badly, unless YOU did not provide the contractor with the specs for install on that insert. Or he did not ask and follow. They are always very specific.

Get a solid surface for entire raised hearth and all the fireproof area required. Or a very large format ( 24 x 72 ) porcelain tile. There are zillions. Go to a dedicated tile store, not a big box.

Absolutely NO. How would they even get it INSIDE the mantel/surround framing? NO.

If you want it? Badly? You remove that traditional white

mantel, surround included. You may be able to salvage just the mantel portion and use that with the stone. Even go right to the ceiling, but my bet is you have no corner pieces, so sides would be an ISSUE.

Frankly, I already gave you the best option...large format porcelain tile. And you will need schluter for edges on the hearth top.

Lesson learned. Fireplaces take a lot of planning. ..........LOTS. Most dictated by specs for fire which very by style, mfg, and venting, gas, wood, electric etc

The transition from flat to sloped ceiling bothers me a bit. It's a bit odd. Would think it might be better to have a new ceiling installed in the sloped portion to provide more continuity between the two spaces.

Option 1 -If I tear down mantle and surround, go with stone like photo 1, (to the mantle) would the shelves work then? if so hiow tall?? The hearth is limestone, if they pull out surround hopefully it won’t scratch or could be buffed our? Or option 2 kerp as is with tile, could shelves work? I’m sorr,y, these photos all show shelves so wasn’t clear on that since you mentioned mirrors. I do value your opinion.
