OMG what a beautiful home. Definitely paint the interior doors and their trim white. NOT the front door or its trim. You didn't say which windows you are replacing but if they are in the common spaces, get the same wood trim. The trim on the windows, slider, fan, railings etc. is charming. I would leave all of that as wood in the common space areas. For bedrooms, which can be unique in decor, anything goes, paint them any color you wish.

IMO the trim is non descript so if you love white IMO go white but I will tell you I hate oak so biased for sure.

I would paint the slats of the stair cases white first but not the railings. See if that is enough first before you paint everything.

@enajasereht If you look at the way the vertical slats are aligned, they don't stop at the edge of the trim but continue over, covering part of the trim. Wouldn't that look odd, very checkerboard and busy in white against the wood in stripes? It would not be a clean line as shown in your examples.

I like white trim but I'm not a fan of the 80s railing painted white.

White with gray might be an option for your home.

I would paint it without hesitation, but I have rarely met stained trim that I didn't want to paint! Which is the main reason we would never buy a historic Victorian/Craftsman with lots of old high quality stained wood.

Personally, I prefer white trim. But, in your case (and if it was my home), I’d put all that money somewhere else. I think you need more color. The wood stands out because there is so much and nothing to takes your attention away from it. You need colorful rugs (bigger, too, to cover up more wood floor), pillows and accessories, larger art work with color, lamps, some color in your chairs, bedding, plants, etc. I think if you got the interior looking great, you might not notice all the wood so much.

Paint it. The baseboards are already white… At some point a more contemporary front door would fit the home better.

I wouldn’t paint the rails and balusters unless you were going to replace them with a different design.

I used to have that style rails. They were not in great shape, so I replaced them with a different style and painted them white. It was a big project because I had to change the structure and make sure it passed the weight test. Those bolted railings/balusters are super strong.

The front door, too??? No, say it ain't so. I vote to keep the front door.

Not the front door. So if I do change the interior doors to white, could I just paint the existing doors and frames. Or would that style of door and trim look funny painted white.

The windows that need replacing are in the study and master bedroom.

So if I painted all the windows and sliders that were not replaced, again would the current trim look okay white or would I need to replace with a different style of trim.

The house is a contemporary built in the 90's that backs up to the woods.

I think the stairs would be trickier. Agree that that style would not look good painted white. If I paint everything white, do you think the stairs and loft railing would look funny-/ would I have to change to a more contemporary metal railing?

Paint all your trim white. We just did our whole house… big job but more then worth the effort.

I suggest painting the interior doors white then and leave the wood trim. That's what we have, white doors with pine trim. The white is bright and clean and the wood adds warmth. Start there and see if you like it. Especially since you have such a natural setting out your windows.

The front door is a beautiful door in a traditional house, this house deserves better and that six panel colonial can get moved into a Georgian revival somewhere… it looks especially silly next to all the flush slab interior doors. One guys opinion.

What type of white interior doors would you all recommend to this contemporary house?

I usually like white trim but with your outside views I prefer the wood for this house.

The house was built in the 90's but in MCM interiors. Just paint the doors you have and their trim white, both upstairs and down. Their style will disappear into the white. In your case leave all the other trim around the great rooms and stairs as wood. Honestly it looks very MCM, as is your lovely decor, and so current with the white walls. White on white is no longer trending so you are ahead of the curve.

In bedrooms including master, and study, paint the walls and trim and ceiling any color combo. That's where to have fun and experiment. That's the only thing you should do IMO. Thank you for leaving the front door as is. Quite striking. And don't replace any trim.

I did find a real estate picture of a similar house where they painted the white trim if it helps.

Actually @BeverlyFLADeziner chose a perfect shade of gray, looks fantastic on the door and staircase in those photos. The cool tone pairs beautifully with wood. But would that be too many gray doors in the halls? Maybe just the staircase and upper balustrade in gray. That leaves only window trim and front door in wood...great look!

Beverly, give us a paint maker and name that matches that shade of gray, please. Is that a flat finish? Thanks for the photos and yes, the stairs are awful in white.

I think you’re adding a huge task to your home. Painting ALL that trim white is a big job now, and a maintenance issue you currently don’t have.

You need a more interesting (and larger rug) in the living room, and window treatments. The windows are completely bare. Window treatments will improve how everything looks.

I would price out changing the staircase banister and rails. Those could be a much more interesting and contemporary style. Look it into a black metal for the staircase.

I moved from a colonial with all white trim to a house with all wood trim. It “goes” with the house so I’ve worked around it and embraced it. It’s a different way to go than painting everything white. (You will then have to paint your walls to create some contrast.)

Replacing eleven sliders is a very big, expensive, proposition. I would wait a good while before doing so. You just aren’t used to wood-toned trim. Give yourself some time before changing things. A good painter could paint all your trim white if you decide that is what you must have.

What type door you ask? I like the one BeverlyFLAdezigner shows in black previously. Think it would work in white in your beautiful home.

Check out Sherwin Williams Web Gray for the stairs. Paint is more cost effective than construction for the same effect. Look at the example given above! And the stairs are beautifully built to begin with. All the OA wanted to know is what color paint.

I would choose another neutral besides white. I like the gray Beverly showed but maybe not so dark. maybe experiment with a door that isn't in the main area. Paint can be tricky to pick out but I don't prefer white.
