Growing backpack prejudice

I've just been told by another store that I can't enter with my backpack, and I have to leave it at the front cash register. I've found this becoming more and more frequent lately, though I have gotten some stores to amend their policy to include large purses and tote bags. The idea that they think I'll happily leave my "purse" at the front just for the privilege of shopping in their store (while I carry my wallet in my hand?) is amazing to me -- but I know they don't really care about me or my business.

More's the shame, but more and more businesses seem to be encouraging me to shop on Amazon, when in reality I'd rather go out and about and do my shopping in person.

FYI, I'm 60 years old and wear a backpack because it's better for my back, shoulders, and posture because it's balanced properly. And, as an added bonus, I can carry small purchases without getting more plastic shopping bags from the stores.
