The history of raisin pie

Nice article showed up on my feed about raisin pie and funerals. The article was nice, not funerals, although they can be nice when the whole community puts on a big food spread. I remember when we had shiva for my grandmother and I thought, "Too bad Bubbie died, she would really enjoy this." Which reminded me to have fun get-togethers BEFORE someone dies . . .

I have never made a pure raisin pie, I have made a mixed dried fruit and fresh apple one and a raisin custard pie. I think straight raisins would be too sweet for my taste.

Very interesting article. It appeared in my newsfeed too. I really enjoy Atlas Obscura, and Gastro Obscura as well. They have excellent podcasts.

I hoped someone would offer a tried and true recipe for you. I can't because raisin pie has never been a favorite of ours but I see there are many "favorite raisin pie" recipes available via Google. In theory you could can any of them as long as you don't include any of the cornstarch or flour they call for but use Clear jel instead. Need pumpkin raisin muffin recipe

You can substitute pecans or walnuts for some or all the raisins. Or also use dried cranberries. Makes 36 muffins. I divided it by 3 to get only 12. Or 6 jumbo. Clare Pumpkin Raisin Muffin Ingredients 3 cups sugar 1 cup oil 4 eggs 2 cups canned pumpkin 3 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons salt 3 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 2/3 cup water 1 cup raisins Directions Mix oil& sugar. Add eggs& pumpkin. Sift all dry ingredients & add alternately with water to pumpkin, mixing well. Stir in raisins. Pour into greased muffin tins& bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

NO! I really don't like them at all, but, that said, I do use them in certain foods. Curry, for example, needs the flavor of a few raisins, along with the apple I won't eat - the raisins and apple pieces get selectively dumped on my DH's plate, LOL.

I ended up sing halg apricots, a quarter peaches and a quarter raisins because that's what I had on hand in the dried fruit dept. I should say that chopping dried apricots in a food processor is more trouble than its worth, but the end result was pretty yummy.

Once upon a time when I was studying recipes from the 1800s, I discovered that raisins have changed quite a bit over time. They used to be bigger and still had seeds. A lot of recipes started with, "Seed the raisins." Which I thought was going to be quite a task until I realized that raisins were made from a bigger variety of grape back then. Seedless raisins is a relatively new product.

I've never had grape pie or grape cake but it is on my list of culinary experiences I would like to have.

I was making muffins this week and the apple I needed to use was bad inside. I had some grapes that were not especially good or fresh, so I whizzed them up and threw them in instrad. Couldn’t tell the difference.
