looking for tall, native, hedge-like plants
Comments (4)I wonder if you asked the head gardener/groundsman at a botanical garden, if he/she might know of a nursery that will carry the size you are looking for? They sometimes have to fill in empty places, and also may have a 'stash' of large container plants in their back-up nursery. I wonder also, if one might plant a rapid-growing "temporary" tree to fill the light-blocking needs and act as a nursery-tree for slower growing natives? The 'temp' could be cut down after the native had reached a suitable height. Does that sound workable? Here is a link that might be useful: CA Botanical Gardens...See MoreNeed some hedge ideas
Comments (14)There are lots of dwarf abelias - 'Sherwoodi' is one, as are 'Kaleidoscope' and 'Confetti', but those are variegated and not everyone's choice for hedging. All the plants in my list are dwarfs......most don't get any taller than 2 or 3 feet over an extended period of time. Very few plants will stay hedged at a precise size without trimming - that's just the nature of hedging. And if pruned properly, they can live for years without issues. No shrubs automatically stop growing when they reach a specific size. Growth slows considerably once they reach genetic maturity but it never really stops. Stop by the Shrubs forum and see a recent thread illustrating 10' tall boxwoods.....they can get massive if old enough and left unpruned....See Moreseeking suggestions for natives for small hedge
Comments (7)Inkberry holly (Ilex glabra) works as a small hedge, especially if you plant a smaller variety such as 'Compacta'. This is an evergreen holly with small, round leaves that looks more like boxwood than like a traditional holly. Inkberry does have berries, so you would think that it's good for wildlife, though I don't know that for sure. Another possibility would be Fothergilla gardenii. I don't know what it offers to wildlife, but it offers the gardener nice white flowers in spring and glorious red-orange color in fall. Both of those shrubs prefer average to moist soil; inkberry can even take wet, poorly drained soil. If your yard is dry, you could plant fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica). Comments (3)Hello, Well, unfortunately, we're talking about only 24 feet of open space along the property line. The main reason for planting is to hide my neighbor's backyard because it's looking like he's planning to spend a lot of time outside. So, it's his back door, which is located right in the middle of his house, probably right where the open space begins. I am planning to have the existing arborviti cut back so they're all around six feet. Does that help in any transition? Can I put in a flowering something where his back door and then continue with a different series of something hedge or trees? Thank you....See Morehollyhobbyist
