Can I overhang 2cm quartz 10" without additional support?

I have a peninsula that is 81" long, with Ikea Sektion cabinets that are 23 5/8" deep (see image). We are planning a 10" overhang on the peninsula. I prefer the aesthetics of 2cm quartz sitting directly on the coutnertops (no plywood underlayment). Question: Is 2cm quartz _without a plywood base_ strong enough to overhang 10" without additional steel supports? I have receiving conflicting advice. Anyone have a similar setup in their kitchen?

Read it for yourself. No, you can't go 10" with 2cm without additional support. Page 20.

Without additional support, 81" is going to sag, I promise.

Look up your engineered stone manufacturer's installation instructions please. Follow those, not the fabricator or designer.

Besides needing support 10 inches isn't deep enough for people to sit comfortably.

As promised here are pictures of the supports installed. We couldn't do the steel sheet because on the backside of the 12" cabinets, which face the overhang, is the sink. Stacy at Amastin knew what type of granite we had and the cabinet layout and recommended installing two supports at approximately 31" apart where cabinet boxes joined together and we had extra support below. The supports are 24" long - 12" on cabinets, 12" overhang. We realize that the supports are farther apart than the typically recommend 16-20", max of 24", but it was by far better than not having any supports at all and we are happy with the solution. We also were very impressed with Amastin's customer service and would gladly use him again in the future. Here are the pictures before and after install. boone, I don't know if the same practices are used in SoCal as NorCal. I don't even know if the thickness of the plywood substrate is spelled out in some code. Does that 1/8" really make that much difference? Apparently my fabricator thought so. And my GC spelled out 5/8" specifically in our contract which was not otherwise rich in detail. Typical of him, I think he "forgot" and thought he could get away with reusing the old plywood from 1991. It does seem to be the norm in these parts (North Bay Area) to use 2 cm slabs on plywood substrate and a built-up edge. I only know and understand this after the fact. Please check with your folks down there, because I don't mean that my experience will be yours. It was a minor big deal for me, fabricators standing around fuming about the wrong thickness plywood, saying it would never do.

Mark_rachel, its only 12" because there is door to my backyard to the right of it and a wall that juts out behind it that would create a bottleneck if the island is too big. That's the most I can have without blocking traffic. When it was designed I wanted a full two feet behind the sink so my kids could sit there without their stuff falling in the sink. It was decided to put cabinets in the back for a little extra storage without the need for extra support. I would love to have a slightly bigger overhang but I don't have to room and yes, I want the best I can get for my money. If you could have the exact same countertop for $2200 vs. $4500 isn't that the way you would go? I'm bucking at the supports because that is what the back cabinets were put there for, supports are going to get in the way of the doors. Mainenell, that's an interesting idea! It would require adapting the back cabinets though or it would block the doors opening. Weedmeister, thanks for the warning. It is firmly bolted in. My husband built the base on site because this house is old and the floor decidedly unlevel.

.......I'm only considering appearances here; I assume you will do everything according to code and acceptable overhang safety guidelines..... I agree that the home and kitchen design matters here. Countertop material makes a difference too. (Floating stone looks weirder than floating wood for some reason.) A modern kitchen can handle floaties better than a 1920s-inspired one. In general, I'd prefer nice table legs at the corners. Whether they're chrome hairpin legs or turned walnut...

Thanks guys. That's just the advice I was hoping to get.

Joseph, I'm not sure how I would go about getting my hands on my manufacturer's installation instructions. The stone I am interested in is Quorastone White Shadow. Do people normally just contact a company like Quorastone and ask for installation instructions? Is this a normal thing to do?

If I were to put supports in, what would a recommended spacing between them be like? Every 2ft-ish?

Edit: Oh, found my answer in Joseph's link to Caesarstone installation instructions on page 20. Answer is yes, every 24 inches.

vinmarks, I'm aware of the advice against 10" overhangs, but thanks for bringing it up anyway. I find 10" perfectly functional for the way I will use this space.
